World premiere recording of the Vespers music from Freddi's 'Messa, vespro et compieta' (Venice, 1616), including a reconstruction of 'Ave maris stella' from the incomplete surviving partbooks of 'Hinni novi concertate' (1642) and including supplementary solo-voice motets from the anthology 'Ghirlanda sacra' (1625) and music by Freddi's contemporaries Ignazio Donati, Alessandro Grandi, Biagio Marini, Dario Castello, and Giovanni and Andrea Gabrieli. Reflection on digital language teaching, learning, and assessment in times of crisis: a view from Italy
This chapter is a reflective account of the author’s experience as a teacher of English at the University of Pavia during the first wave of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. It considers the design and delivery of an English for architecture and construction engineering course as well as the assessment stage of a text analysis course. It proceeds by presenting and discussing the decisions implemented as a consequence of the crisis situation and reflects on principles of English language teaching, learning, and assessment in general and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in particular. In doing so, it addresses the book project rationale as an opportunity to reflect on the adjustments made to various planning and design factors informing language education during the health crisis and thought to be generalisable to language teaching, learning, and assessment in the global digital world. It concludes with thoughts on what the future of digital language teaching, learning, and assessment could look like
Analysing Audiovisual Dialogue: Linguistic and Translational Insights
This volume is a collection of studies on the language of audiovisual − film and television − dialogue, both in original and translated texts. It hosts contributions by researchers addressing the topic from different but complementary disciplinary angles and various linguistic and socio-cultural perspectives. The volume thus testifies the growing interest for this variety of language “written to be spoken as if not written” (Gregory 1968; Taylor 1999), also described as “parlato-recitato” (Nencioni 1976) or “simulated spoken language” (Rossi 1999), a type of fictional, pre-fabricated dialogue (Marzà, Chaume this volume; Romero this volume) which − unlike narrative − is ultimately produced and received in the audio-oral medium and − unlike theatre − is irreversibly bound to a fixed, represented context. The need for systematic investigations on large samples of audiovisual dialogue has in fact begun to be specifically addressed in the last few years (e.g. Rossi 1999, Bubel 2006, Romero 2008) and has resulted in the creation of corpora of original and/or dubbed language, many of which computerized (see various contributions in Chiaro et al. 2008, Matamala 2008, Alfieri et al. 2008, Quaglio 2009). In response to the call for research on audiovisual translation (AVT) to rely on large-scale collections of data, the present volume also includes investigations on a corpus of original and dubbed film dialogue created at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics of the University of Pavia within the nationally funded inter-university project Ecolingua . The corpus of English dialogues dubbed into Italian presented here reflects the current dominance of English as the major source language (SL) in AVT as well as the vigour of research in a country, Italy, where dubbing is still the most common modality of audiovisual transfer
Adaptive mesh refinement for the phase field method: A FEniCS implementation
This paper reports insightful implementation details of the global adaptive refinement procedure for the phase-field method recently published in Freddi and Mingazzi (2022). Phase field approaches reproduce cracks within solids in a smeared manner. The small transition zone between broken and unbroken material, whose width is controlled by an internal scale length parameter, permits to precisely replicate complex sharp crack topologies only if an extremely fine mesh is adopted. Starting from a coarse mesh, the proposed refinement process utilizes an energetic criterion to selectively refine the elements on which cracks may propagate. In fully broken areas, where the phase field is no longer evolving, a specific refinement is adopted to capture the high displacement gradient. The implementation is performed within the open-source finite element software FEniCS (ver. 19.1.0) which provides a framework for automated solutions of partial differential equations. The fundamental aspects of the code are described starting from the functional definition to the various steps of the refinement technique. A representative example is illustrated to supply further information on the code functionality. Numerical aspects in the SGBEM solution of softening cohesive interface problems
AbstractSome numerical aspects of a new symmetric Galerkin boundary integral formulation presented in [A. Salvadori, A symmetric boundary integral formulation for cohesive interface problems, Comput. Mech. 32 (2003) 381–391] connected with a like arc-length technique for softening cohesive interface problems introduced in [F. Freddi, Cohesive interface analysis via boundary integral equations, Ph.D. thesis, University of Bologna, Italy, 2004] are here investigated. Further, if the problem is invariant with respect to a finite group G of congruences of the Euclidean space R2, we propose to reduce the computational cost of the symmetric Galerkin boundary element method (SGBEM) matrix evaluation and linear system solution using suitable restriction matrices strictly related to a system of irreducible matrix representation of G. Some numerical simulations are presented and discussed

La Rivista Italiana di Politiche Pubbliche (RIPP), prima e unica rivista in Italia interamente dedicata all’analisi delle politiche pubbliche, è stata fondata nel 2001 da Giorgio Freddi – che tuttora la dirige - e raccoglie nel Comitato direttivo i principali esperti, italiani e stranieri, dello studio politologico dei programmi di intervento pubblico e degli apparati amministrativi in Italia e in prospettiva comparata.
La Rivista, ad impronta fortemente multidisciplinare, è interessata ad articoli di carattere teorico-interpretativo e a presentazioni di ricerche empiriche che abbiano come oggetto:
a) gli elementi costitutivi delle politiche pubbliche (attori, istituzioni, idee, reti relazionali);
b) l’interazione tra il sistema politico e la società nel policy making;
c) l'impatto della competizione partitica e degli assetti politico-istituzionali sui programmi di politica pubblica;
d) le relazioni tra le proprietà organizzative delle strutture politico-amministrative e le politiche pubbliche;

Methodology for aesthetical design in a citycar
The present work aims to indicate a methodology of “design for aesthetics”, through the realization of a particular city-car body. We should realize a good looking car, without forgetting the importance of mechanical and economical aspects. The result we have got is very interesting; in fact the city-car obtained is a sum of beauty, economics and intelligence. The method followed is very similar to those methods used by the most famous firms of design products, just like Pininfarina, Giugiaro Design, Bertone, etc. This method is illustrated in the paragraphs below
A new method for modelling the support effect under rotating bending fatigue: application to Ti-6Al-4V alloy, with and without shot peening
The subject of this paper is to investigate the capability of the relative stress gradient to properly represent the beneficial effect of residual stress states on the fatigue life of Ti-6Al-4V specimens, with notches of different severity. The research was developed considering notched and un-notched specimens with different geometries and different
shot-peening treatments. The results were determined by running fatigue experimentation under rotating bending and by developing a novel predictive model based on the
relationship between the local fatigue limit and a generalized form of the relative stress gradient, accounting for the peening-induced residual stresses. The proposed tool for fatigue limit estimation was completed by a stochastic analysis, which considered the variability of the involved parameters, in particular the residual stress entity. This made it possible to finally determine the component failure probability in a general, efficient and accurate way
Effetto supporto, tensione locale e gradiente relativo di tensione nella predizione della vita a fatica
Obiettivo ultimo delle ricerche nelle quali si inquadra questo studio è superare, o almeno limitare, la necessità di complicate e costose prove sperimentali a favore di altri metodi predittivi della vita a fatica. Scopo specifico del presente lavoro è la valutazione di una formulazione proposta in letteratura per predire, tramite analisi agli Elementi Finiti, la vita a fatica locale, nella regione ad alto numero di cicli, di componenti con qualunque distribuzione irregolare di tensione. Concetto base di questa nuova teoria è che il fenomeno della vita a fatica sia governato dal gradiente relativo di tensione nella zona maggiormente sollecitata del componente. Le equazioni proposte dalla nuova teoria per il calcolo della pendenza delle curve S-N e del limite di fatica sono verificate tramite il confronto con dati sperimentali tratti da letteratura. Mentre la formulazione per il calcolo del limite di fatica mostra un buon accordo con i dati sperimentali (errore medio percentuale del 7%), la pendenza valutata mediante l’equazione proposta risulta sovrastimata (errore medio percentuale del 123%). Si presenta quindi una nuova formula che permette di ottenere un errore medio percentuale del 24% sulla pendenza nel confronto con i dati sperimentali
