The "Last Great Taboo": the rise of Thanatophobia in the United States and how we can deal with it
Our relationship with death in the United States has changed dramatically since the nineteenth century. With the rise of modern technology as well as modern medicine, we as a society have become very disconnected from death. As a result of this as well as the notion that death is “un-American,” we have become very fearful of death (Samuel x). While it may seem that our relationship with death in the United States is too far gone to worry about fixing, there are things that we can do to repair our relationship with our mortality. By adopting the tenets of the death positivity movement and choosing more eco-friendly alternatives to death care, as well as listening to people from non-death-denying cultures, we can make our relationship with death a bit more positive, and also begin to better understand and appreciate the natural cycle of life.B. ?Honors Colleg
Necrosociety, mortispolitics, and miquiztli-politics
Necrosociety, Mortispolitics, and Miquiztli-politics challenges the underlying assumptions of necropolitics and biopolitics, exploring core concepts such as neoliberalism, neonationalism, and decoloniality, and proposing a new framework that expands our comprehension of these two domains. The book opens by discussing the existing conceptual debates around how we can best conceptualize the political interplay of life and death. It then moves on to explore necrosociety, mortispolitics, and Miquiztli-politics, three concepts put forward as alternative concepts in approaching the politics of life and death. The book posits that the concepts of biopolitics and necropolitics ought to be oriented within the theoretical framework of postcolonial, anticolonial, and decolonial theories. This framing clarifies the ongoing global structural differences between countries operating within a global and internal colonialism context, allowing the reader to see another side of biopolitical and necropolitical issues. "Necrosociety" attempts to articulate dimensions that biopolitics and necropolitics have not yet addressed, exploring a sociological dimension where death has extended to the point that it goes hand in hand with capitalism, producing and multiplying the social and natural-world deaths. Second, "mortispolitics" is created as an alternative category that acknowledges death. Mortispolitics builds upon the notion of death as seen in necropolitics, but instead of focusing on the state of exception, it examines the state of the law. The book uses the North–South distinction because this concept applies only to North America, specifically the United States and Mexico. It articulates a new notion of death, one based on Amerindian peoples’ ideas of sacrifice and cannibalism, arguing for a conception of death that extends beyond necropolitics. Analyzing the interplay between life and death through a political lens, Necrosociety, Mortispolitics, and Miquiztli-politics will be of great interest to students and scholars of political philosophy, political theory, postcolonialism, and Latin American Studies
Vitalist Capitalism, Ethos and Lethalism | Capitalismo vitalista, ethos e letalismo
New vitalism has established a connection between vitalism and ethos, maintaining a normative understanding of life that acknowledges opposing forces like pain, suffering, illness, and mortality as beneficial attitudes that enhance vitalism. I contend that the new vitalism holds a normative standpoint that is significant in Canghilhem\u27s appreciation of life. This article explores the relationship between vitalism and ethos within the context of vitalist capitalism. In this article, I explain the connection between vitalism and ethos within the category of vitalist capitalism from a descriptive standpoint. This concept is fueled by four distinct philosophies, namely Christianity, Aristotelianism, Mechanism, and Biologicism, which all interact and produce a new form of lethalism. Republicanizing Democracy: An Antidote to Weariness?
In her chapter, Rodriguez Rial approaches the weariness of democracy from a particular perspective: that of the republican debate. In this sense, the aim of her text is to analyze the impact of the republican debate on the way that political science has conceptualized democracy. She addresses this question originally through one of the most important works of one of the leading Argentinian political scientists of the past four decades, "Accountability Horizontal" by Guillermo O´Donnell. She mainly focuses on his interpretation of the republican tradition and comparing his views with those of neo-republicans and its critics such as McCormick and Urbinati. In the final section, Rodriguez Rial readdresses democracy weariness and raises the question: Could it be exorcized by the mere republicanization of democracy?.Fil: Rodriguez, Gabriela. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
