Are the least successful traders those most likely to exit the market? A survival analysis contribution to the efficient market debate
Concerns regarding the assumptions of the Efficient Market Hypothesis have led to a greater emphasis on how the behaviour of different groups of traders might impact the evolution of financial markets; ideas encapsulated in the Adaptive Markets Hypothesis (AMH). A key assumption of the AMH is that the dynamics of competition and natural selection will drive ‘noise traders’, those least likely to push prices to efficient levels because they follow sub-optimal trading strategies, to exit the market. To test the key assumptions of the AMH, survival analysis is employed to examine the behaviour of retail spread-traders, a group who are widely reported to include many noise traders. Analysis of the trades executed by 5,164 individuals in the period 24th March 2006 to 7th February 2012 found that the least profitable and those who adopted ill-disciplined trading strategies tended to cease trading sooner than others. These findings are consistent with the AMH. However, profitable traders were also found to be more likely to cease trading than the average trader and a V-shaped relationship was found between a trader’s Sharpe ratio and their likelihood of ceasing to trade (cf. the average trader). Furthermore, during the financial crisis of 2008-09, the disposition effect of traders and the proportion of noise traders increased and throughout the period of the study, the ill-discipline of new generations of traders increased. The results suggest that the forces underpinning the AMH are complex and the move towards market efficiency may not be as straightforward as some expect

Between Asoteriological Aphorisms and Black Gnosis. Emil Cioran, Peter Sloterdijk and Peter Sloterdijk's Cioran
This article presents an introduction to the Romanian author Emil Cioran’s life and work. Cioran lived most of his life in self-imposed exile in Paris, where he kept himself out of the public gaze. From his small attic on the left bank of the river Seine, he published numerous collections of aphorisms and essays dealing with his own miserabilism and permanent existential despair. Further, in his books he is reflecting on the human condition in a world where humans have no possibility of receiving nor acquiring salvation or redemption. This presentation of Cioran leads to an investigation of his influence on the work and thought of the German philosopher Peter Sloterdijk. I show that Cioran in fact plays an important and long-lasting role throughout Sloterdijk’s authorship by analysing texts from three different periods of his oeuvre. Thus, I seek to construct a picture of Sloterdijk’s Cioran and understand why he is important to him
Interaktivt Midgård: tønderæs og fanfiction-romancer i Peter Jacksons Hobbitten
RESUMÉI essayet ”On Fairy Stories” afslører forfatter J.R.R. ABSTRACT In the essay ”On Fairy Stories”, author J.R.R. Tolkien reveals two important concepts behind his creation of Middle-earth and fantasy literature: subcreation and immersion. While both concepts have played a key role in the fanfiction and gaming culture surrounding his works, they are highly present in Peter Jackson’s often criticized adaptation of The Hobbit that uses interactive strategies similar to those applied by the fan culture to both realize and challenge the author’s original intentions while showing alternative ways of approaching an ever-expanding Middle-earth.
Udstigere og immunsystemer, asketer og akrobater. Om Peter Sloterdijks Du musst dein Leben ändern. Über Anthropotechnik
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A presentation and discussion of Peter Sloterdijk’s monumental work from 2009, You Must Change Your Life. The author regards asceticism (in the etymological sense of exercise, training) both as an anthropological constant, the rea-son behind bio-cultural and cultural evolution, and as a special, conscious lifestyle, first formulated in the axial age (from around 500 BC). The analysis can (partly against the author’s own intentions) be seen as an important contribution to an evolutionary history of religion. A fuller understanding of the phenomenon of asceticism as a cultural constant needs, however, the supplement provided by Emile Durkheim’s theory of the ‘negative cult’.DANSK RESUMÉ: En gennemgang og diskussion af Peter Sloterdijks monumentale værk fra 2009, Du musst dein Leben ändern.
When a community seperates itself from society, its survival depends on a delicate balance between separation and isolation. The case to be presented here is the Jonestown Colony in Guyana, visited by the author shortly before its collective suicide. The selfdestruction is analyzed in terms of the psychology of large groups. Within the camp, incestuous relationshipsflourished, and there were unresolved conflicts between individuation and assimilation. It developed to a »greedy institution«, with the leader as the absolute power centre. Isolation, an apocalyptic ideology, and a loss of history, all contributed to the destructionof the cultural Matrix.Når en storgruppe adskiller sig fra storsamfundet, er dets overlevelse betinget af at kunne adskille sig uden at blive isoleret.
Sidst i artiklen forsøger forfatteren kort at sammenfatte den forhåndenværende viden vedrørende spædbørns evner til at individuere objekterThis article is about infants' cognition of objects' numerical identity. The first section of the article is an outline and a critical evaluation of Meltzoff & Moore's identity theory. The second section contains a presentation and a discussion of some of the recent studies within this field of research. The studies in focus are Wynn (1992), Simon, Hespos & Rochat (1995), and Wilcox & Baillargeon (in press, a; b). Finally, the author seeks in brief to systematise the present knowledge concerning object individuation in infants
Atrial protective effects of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids: A long-term study in ovine chronic heart failure
BackgroundIt has been suggested that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) may prevent the development of atrial fibrillation (AF).ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of these agents on development of the AF substrate in heart failure (HF).MethodsIn this study, HF was induced by intracoronary doxorubicin infusions. Twenty-one sheep [7 with n-3 PUFAs treated HF (HF-PUFA), 7 with olive oil-treated HF controls (HF-CTL), 7 controls (CTL)] were studied. Open chest electrophysiologic study was performed with assessment of biatrial effective refractory period (ERP) and conduction. Cardiac function was monitored by magnetic resonance imaging. Atrial n-3 PUFAs levels were quantified using chromatography. Structural analysis was also performed.ResultsAtrial n-3 PUFAs levels were twofold to threefold higher in the HF-PUFA group. n-3 PUFAs prevented the development of HF-related left atrial enlargement (P = .001) but not left ventricular/atrial dysfunction. Atrial ERP was significantly lower in the HF-PUFA group (P ConclusionIn this ovine HF study, chronic n-3 PUFAs use protected against adverse atrial remodeling by preventing atrial enlargement, fibrosis, and conduction abnormalities leading to shorter AF episodes despite lower ERP.Dennis H.
