Joint resource allocation for latency-constrained dynamic computation offloading with MEC

    Get PDF
In this paper, we address the problem of dynamic computation offloading with Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC), where new requests for computations are continuously generated at each user equipment (UE), and are handled through dynamic queue systems. Building on stochastic optimization tools, we provide a dynamic algorithm that jointly optimize radio (i.e., power, bandwidth) and computation (i.e., CPU cycles) resources, while guaranteeing a target performance in terms of average latency and out of service probability, i.e., the probability that the (sum of) computation queues exceeds a predefined value. The method requires the solution of a convex optimization problem at each time slot, and does not need any apriori knowledge of channel and task arrival distributions. Finally, numerical results corroborate the potential benefits of our strategy

Hermann Kant. Ein bio- bibliografisches Profil

The proximity to the power apparatus has cast dark shadows on the literary work of Hermann Kant, who is regarded as one of the most read authors of the GDR. Valerio Furneri embeds Kant's life and work in the all-German context of the 20th century and reinterprets his classics such as Die Aula or Der Aufenthalt. The author does not pursue the claim to rehabilitate the GDR, nor to trivialise Kant's role in it. Instead, the attempt is made to look at Kant's entire work from a temporal distance and to re-evaluate it. Through his works, Kant was able to accompany and depict not only the German-German history, but also European history.

The next generation of Wi-Fi is meant to achieve ultra-high reliability for wireless communication. Several approaches are available to this extent, some of which are being considered for inclusion in standards specifications, including coordination of access points to reduce interference. In this paper, we propose a centralized architecture based on digital twins, called WiTwin, with the aim of supporting wireless stations in selecting the optimal association according to a set of parameters. Unlike prior works, we assume that Wi-Fi 7 features like multi-link operation (MLO) are available. Moreover, one of the main goals of this architecture is to preserve communication quality in the presence of mobility, by helping stations to perform reassociation at the right time and in the best way

The intentionality of matter: the personal character of nature in Edith Stein's "Potency and act"

In the closing chapter, Francesco Valerio Tommasi elaborates upon the analogy between person and nature in Stein. As he emphasizes, Stein attributes to nature an objectively spiritual dimension, a hidden form of intentionality. As the author suggests, for Stein nature turns out to be a living sign of the spirit—thus, a sign expressing spiritual values, such as emotions. This perspective is present in both the lectures on The Constitution of the Human Person and Potency and Act: the phenomenological reflection on personhood is combined, Tommasi argues, with a Thomist view that brings Stein to conceiving the life of the entire cosmos as a spirit (or act) informing it and shaping it into a living sign of the creation

Edge IoT Industrial Immersive and Spatial Computing Applications

    No full text
Immersive technologies, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and extended reality (XR), alongside advanced concepts such as digital twins (DT), immersive triplets (IMT), the metaverse, omniverse, and spatial computing, represent a significant shift in industrial applications across sectors like culture and heritage, manufacturing, automotive, energy, buildings/construction, mobility. transportation, logistics, healthcare, agriculture/farming, tourism, education and training. The convergence of these immersive technologies with edge IoT, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced intelligent connectivity infrastructure is shaping an industrial real-digital-virtual continuum, termed the "Phygital" world. By combining real-world interactions and virtual simulations, industries achieve improved operational efficiency, reduced downtime, enhanced safety protocols, and superior decision-making capabilities [24]. Edge IoT industrial immersive technologies require extensive interdisciplinary collaboration and robust infrastructure, from advanced computing platforms to advanced sensors and haptic devices. Real-time, high-performance processing capabilities, alongside reliable and secure connectivity with very low latency, are fundamental. As these technologies mature, standardisation, interoperability, trustworthiness, ethics, and sustainability become critical considerations, shaping global regulatory frameworks and industry standards. Developing immersive applications requires managing risks associated with data protection, privacy, AI ethics, and technological convergence while fostering innovation and growth. This position paper on “Edge IoT Industrial Immersive and Spatial Computing Applications” aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the convergence between IoT, AI, edge, and spatial computing, and how they are applied to various industrial immersive applications across different industrial sectors. It details the transformative impact of these applications across a wide range of industrial sectors, including culture and heritage, manufacturing, automotive, energy, construction, mobility, logistics, healthcare, agriculture, tourism, education and training. For each sector, the paper presents a thorough analysis of specific application scenarios. It identifies the key users and stakeholders involved, describes how these applications are implemented within a virtual world, and outlines the significant added value they bring to the industry. Furthermore, it specifies the required immersive technology functionalities, details the underlying technology layer requirements, and examines how cross-cutting horizontal issues manifest in each specific context. Beyond the sector-specific applications, the paper dedicates chapters to critical horizontal topics such as trustworthiness, ethics, stainability, standardisation, and interoperability. For each of these areas, it identifies the primary challenges to successful implementation and discusses future research trends and directions, offering a forward-looking perspective on the evolution of these technologies. The goal of this approach is to create a holistic document that showcases the current state and potential of industrial immersive applications and provides a strategic roadmap. It highlights the technological requirements and addresses the crucial non-technical challenges, serving as a foundational resource for researchers, innovators, and industry leaders navigating this rapidly advancing field

This volume documents the Proceedings of the 1st Workshop on Resources and Techniques for User and Author Profiling in Abusive Language (ResT-UP), held online on 12 May 2020 as part of the LREC 2020 conference (International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation). The workshop aimed at bringing together researchers and scholars working on author profiling and automatic detection of abusive language on the Web, e.g., cyberbullying or hate speech, with a twofold objective: improving the existing LRs, e.g., datasets, corpora, lexicons, and sharing ideas on stylometry techniques and features needed for profile information extraction and classification. ResT-UP targeted Profiling scholars and research groups, experts in Statistic and Stylistic Analysis of texts as well as computational linguists who investigate author profile and personality both in short texts (social media posts, blog texts and email) and in long texts (such as pamphlets, (fake) news and political documents). ReST-UP represented an opportunity to share profiling experiments with the scientific community and to show automatic detection techniques of abusive language on the Web. Despite the cancellation of LREC 2020 due to the COVID-19 international emergency, ResT-UP was organized online on Microsoft Teams on May 12th 2020 and the programme included three oral presentations and featured an invited talk by Paolo Rosso. ResT-UP was attended by about fifty representatives of academic and industrial organisations
