Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Funktionalisierung von Biowerkstoffen durch biomimetische Strukturen auf der Basis von Tetraetherlipiden - ein Antifoulingkonzept
Seit geraumer Zeit beschäftigt sich die Wissenschaft mit der Bekämpfung unerwünschter Biofilme – dem Antifouling. Die vorliegende Arbeit ordnet sich in diesen Entwicklungsschwerpunkt ein. Es werden über die Beschichtung mit archaealen Tetraetherlipiden vom Mikroorganismus Thermoplasma acidophilum und deren Funktionalisierung antiadhäsive Eigenschaften entwickelt. Mit Bezug auf die Gibbs`sche Fundamentalgleichung wurden relevante Wechselwirkungen an der Grenzfläche verglichen und in einem Konzept zusammengefasst. Entsprechend der Applikationen: Sensoren im Gewässermonitoring und Katheter für die peritoneale Dialyse, dienten als Substratwerkstoffe das Borosilikatglas B33 (Schott Jena AG) und ein Silikon aus dem Medizinproduktebereich (SIK 6504, Rehau AG). Die physikochemische Charakterisierung basierte auf der Bestimmung der Oberflächen-energie und des Zetapotenzials sowohl der Lipidschichten als auch der Oberflächen der Mikro-organismen. Gemäß der Applikationen wurden in vitro-Modelle aufgebaut und die Bioadhäsions-messung im Labor in Anwendung von Fließkammersystemen durchgeführt. In Kooperation mit Industriepartnern erfolgten Funktionalitätstest unter Feldbedingungen und die Biokompatibilitäts-prüfung. Die auf dem Borosilikatglas aufgebrachten monomolekularen Lipidschichten verdeutlichten, dass das archaeale Tetraetherlipid auf Oberflächen kovalent fixierbar ist. Es steht eine neuartige Beschichtung zur Verfügung, welche als Spacer für die Anbindung von Funktionsmolekülen dient. Die neuen Lipidschichten präsentierten ebenso den Erhalt sowohl der optischen als auch der elektro-chemischen Sensorfunktionalität. Die Analyse des Antifoulingpotenzials der Tetraetherlipidschichten und ihrer Funktionalisierungen lässt sich in einer positiven Bilanz zusammenfassen. Die vergleichende Betrachtung der Ergebnisse der Laboranalysen und des Feldtests lassen zudem die Annahme zu, dass die gewählte Methodik der in vitro-Bioadhäsionsmessungen eine im Feld nicht existente Härteprüfung darstellt. Zusammenfassend und grundsätzlich wird bezüglich der theoretischen Erfassung der Bioadhäsion bestätigt, dass keines der thermodynamischen Modelle die komplexe Situation zufriedenstellend und umfassend beschreibt. Dessen ungeachtet wurde klar aufgezeigt, dass sich die Reduzierung der initialen Bioadhäsion auf Säure-Base-Wechselwirkungen insbesondere ihrer hydrophilen und sterischen Energieanteile zurückführen lässt und somit der Aufbau einer sterisch wirksamen Wasserbarriere ein effektives Antifoulingkonzept darstellt.For quite some time science concerns itself with the prevention of biofilms – the antifouling. The present work places itself in this development focus. The study aims on the development of antiadhesive characteristics by means of coating with archaeal tetraether lipids from the microorganism Thermoplasma acidophilum and their functionalization in order to prevent adhesion of microorganisms. During the concept development relevant interactions at the interface between substrate/biosystem/medium were compared according to the Gibbs fundamental equation and summarized in an own concept. According to the two selected applications: sensors in the water monitoring and catheters for peritoneal dialysis, a borsilicat glass B33 (Schott Jena AG) and a medical silicone (SIK 6504, Rehau AG) served as substrate materials. The characterization included the determination of energetic surface parameters and the estimation of the zeta potential of the lipid films and the microorganisms. In accordance with the application examples in vitro models were developed, which simulated application in the watermonitoring and medical conditions. The bioadhesion measurement in the laboratory was accomplished on defined flow conditions by use of flow chamber systems. In co-operation with industrial partners bringing the tetraetherlipid coatings into functionality test took place on real conditions as well as into the biocompatibility examination. The mono molecular lipid films clarified that the tetraether lipid isolated from the membrane of Thermoplasma acidophilum is covalently fixable on surface. A new coating is available, which serves as spacer for functional molecules. The new lipid coatings also did not interfere with the optical and electrochemical sensor functionality. The pure tetraether lipid coating of the materials already shows a continuous reduction of bioadhesion. The comparative analysis of the results of the laboratory experiments and the field test confirms the acceptance that the selected methodology of in vitro bioadhesion evaluation represents a strong test condition which does not exist in the natural conditions. In summary and in principle concerning the theoretical description of the bioadhesion it is confirmed that none of the thermodynamic models describes the complex situation satisfyingly and comprehensively. Regardless it was clearly pointed out that the reduction of the initial bioadhesion can be attributed to acid-base-interaction in particular its hydrophilic and steric energy contribution and thus the creation of a sterically effective water barrier represents an promising antifouling concept.von Marion Fran
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
