Rice Institute football player Frank Ryan

    No full text
Black and white photograph of Rice Owls football player Frank Ryan, accompanied by text headlining his achievement and entry into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame.Caption reads: FRANK RYAN (class of 1958) was paired with King Hill by coach Jess Neely to give Rice one of collegiate football’s greatest quarterbacking duos. Ryan was the rapier to Hill’s mighty broadsword for three years, climaxing with the 1957 SWC championship. When defenses overshifted to stop the Hill power, Neely could change pace with Ryan’s slashing running and pinpoint passing. Against the number-one ranked Aggies, Frank moved the Owls 78 yards, running the last 26 to the Aggie one himself. Hill blasted it in to end the Aggies’ 17-game win streak. In the Cotton Bowl, Navy was doing a great job of sitting on a somewhat lucky 20-0 lead. Ryan came in late to pass for one TD, but the final whistle stopped him and the Owls on Navy’s four. Frank went on to a great 13-year career in pro ball at Los Angeles, Cleveland and Washington. It was highlighted by Frank leading the Cleveland Browns to the NFL title in 1964. During off seasons, this superb scholar-athlete from Paschal High in Fort Worth took his Ph.D. at Rice. He later became athletic director at Yale University before returning to his alma mater as the vice president of external affairs.Rice University Athletic Hall of Fame (poor quality image

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
