    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Multivariate Patterns of Brain-Behavior-Environment Associations in the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development Study

    Background: Adolescence is a critical developmental stage. A key challenge is to characterize how variation in adolescent brain organization relates to psychosocial and environmental influences. Methods: We used canonical correlation analysis to discover distinct patterns of covariation between measures of brain organization (brain morphometry, intracortical myelination, white matter integrity, and resting-state functional connectivity) and individual, psychosocial, and environmental factors in a nationally representative U.S. sample of 9623 individuals (aged 9–10 years, 49% female) participating in the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. Results: These analyses identified 14 reliable modes of brain-behavior-environment covariation (canonical rdiscovery =.21 to.49, canonical rtest =.10 to.39, pfalse discovery rate corrected <.0001). Across modes, neighborhood environment, parental characteristics, quality of family life, perinatal history, cardiometabolic health, cognition, and psychopathology had the most consistent and replicable associations with multiple measures of brain organization; positive and negative exposures converged to form patterns of psychosocial advantage or adversity. These showed modality-general, respectively positive or negative, associations with brain structure and function with little evidence of regional specificity. Nested within these cross-modal patterns were more specific associations between prefrontal measures of morphometry, intracortical myelination, and functional connectivity with affective psychopathology, cognition, and family environment. Conclusions: We identified clusters of exposures that showed consistent modality-general associations with global measures of brain organization. These findings underscore the importance of understanding the complex and intertwined influences on brain organization and mental function during development and have the potential to inform public health policies aiming toward interventions to improve mental well-being

    The role of gender as a barrier to the professional development of psychiatrists

    Background Despite efforts toward greater gender equality in clinical and academic psychiatry in recent years, more information is needed about the challenges in professional development within psychiatry, and how these may vary with gender. Methods A cross-sectional 27-item online survey was conducted with psychiatrists and psychiatric trainee members of the European Psychiatric Association. Results A total of 561 psychiatrists and psychiatric trainees from 35 European countries participated representing a response rate of 52.8% for women and 17.7% for men from a total sample of 1,580. The specific challenges that women face in their professional development fall into two categories. One comprised women's negative attitudes concerning their abilities in self-promotion and networking. The other identified environmental barriers related to lack of opportunity and support and gender discrimination. Compared to men, women reported higher rates of gender discrimination in terms of professional advancement. Women were less likely to agree that their institutions had regular activities promoting inclusion, diversity, and training to address implicit gender bias. Working in high-income countries compared to middle-income countries relates to reporting institutional support for career progression. Conclusions These findings are an open call to hospital leaders, deans of medical schools, and department chairs to increase efforts to eradicate bias against women and create safer, inclusive, and respectful environments for all psychiatrists, a special call to women psychiatrists to be aware of inner tendencies to avoid self-promotion and networking and to think positively and confidently about themselves and their abilities

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Robotics & Constructivism in Education: the TERECoP project

    This paper presents the European project “Teacher Education on Robotics-Enhanced Constructivist Pedagogical Methods” (TERECoP). A first premise of this project concerns the implementation of constructivist – constructionist methods not only in classroom, but in teacher education as well. A second premise is referred to the technology-enhanced learning as occurred in the implementation of different kinds of curriculum innovation in the classrooms. A third is related with the emerging need for a teaching as a research-based profession and for the creation of a culture in which researchers and teachers can create a shared body of knowledge. The paper describes the starting point of this project, focusing on the context, on the aims of the project and on the different partners’ countries experiences, and outlines the different stages that are going to be developed to implement the project giving a description of every one. Finally some preliminary conclusions are presented

    Rehabilitation of Theory of Mind deficit in schizophrenia: a pilot study of metacognitive strategies in group treatment

    People affected by schizophrenia show major deficits in theory of mind (ToM) and in social cognition. Rehabilitation interventions based on non-social metacognitive functions are most likely to provide successful results. Social cognition, neurocognition, clinical variables, and community functioning were assessed in 20 people with schizophrenia. Ten people were randomly assigned to a six-month rehabilitation programme based on a metacognitive strategy for a social cognition rehabilitation. Results suggest that patients would benefit from rehabilitation in terms of their competence in social interactions.Le persone affette da schizofrenia mostrano deficit importanti nella Teoria della Mente (Theory of Mind, ToM) e nella cognizione sociale. Gli interventi riabilitativi basati su funzioni metacognitive non sociali sembrano riportare buoni risultati. In 20 soggetti affetti da schizofrenia sono state valutate la cognizione sociale, la neurocognizione, variabili cliniche e di funzionamento sociale. Dieci soggetti sono stati assegnati in maniera randomizzata ad un programma riabilitativo basato su strategie metacognitive per una riabilitazione della cognizione sociale. I risultati suggeriscono che i pazienti potrebbero beneficiare di questo tipo di riabilitazione in termini di acquisizione di competenza nelle relazioni sociali

The paper started by delving into the history of Book Publishing in Nigeria after which it proceeded by defining who an author, a publisher, and a bookseller is and expatiated on the indispensable roles of these key actors in Nigerian Book Industry and in the emerging Information Society. Furthermore, the various constraints to book development were identified while the paper advised on how the Book Industry can be further promoted in Nigeria. However, the paper concluded and made recommendations on how the Book sector can help in enhancing scholarship in the country
