Mirror Acts: Dramatic Form in Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author and Beckett’s Waiting for Godot
Pirandello is among the first playwrights to reshape the very notion of theatre and pave the way for a postmodern understanding of the human. By fixing one of drama’s cardinal axes—space—and making it simultaneously literal and inherently static—Pirandello frees the other—time—thereby undoing the core of the dramatic arc. This simple shift repositions both plot and characters, placing them in a cosmology which tauntingly ignores them. Their experience—and by extension the human experience—becomes inherently aimless. In this latter light, Pirandello’s characters are an anticipation of Beckett’s. While this is indubitably an important point of contact between the two, it is the similarity in their structural redefinition of spacetime, that allows both to pave the way for a pivotal revolution of form that will bloom in the works of their heirs—Pinter and Stoppard, primarily—and anticipate postdramatic theatre. In this light, Six Characters in Search of an Author, first staged in Rome and Paris in 1921 a time when Beckett would have been exposed to a response to it, plants a lasting seed
Amazonian plants from ethnomedicine to biotechnology through pharmaceutical biology approaches: a PhD experience in connecting forest with laboratory
The South american Natives, Shuar and Achuar people and their ethnomedical culture constitute the
background subject of the Phd research, performed both in Ecuador (Salesian Politechnic University,
Quito), and in Italy (Pharmaceutical biology labs, University of Ferrara). Based on ethnomedical
responses, Piper aduncum, Maytenus macrocarpa, Schinus molle, Tecoma stans and Eugenia hallii were
chosen as amazonian plant species subject of the research.
AIMS
The research has been focused on:
− checking the presence of endophytic fungi in plants;
− isolating and subculturing pure endophytic strains;
− checking the biotransformation capacity of the isolated endophytes on pure compounds; the most
performing endophytes were also tested on phytocomplexes and pure chemicals obtained by the
plant from which the fungi were isolated;
− phytochemical characterization and bioactivity assays of plant extracts: P. aduncum.
−
METHODS
Biotransformations. Fresh aerial plant parts were properly washed in sanitizing solutions and in vitro
cultured using adequate solid media to isolate endophytes. (+/-)-cis-bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-2-en-6-one,
acetophenone, 1-indanone, 2-furyl methyl ketone, 2-methylcyclopentanone, 2-methylcyclohexanone, 2-
methoxycyclohexanone were chosen as substrate model for biotransformations. The cultures were
sampled after 1, 3, 7, 10 days of culturing, and ethyl acetate extracted to verify by GC-MS the presence of
possible biotransformation products. Biotransformations were also checked on P. aduncum whole
essential oil and on dillapiol, cis-ocimene, piperitone, (-)-terpinen-4-ol as most abundant chemicals.
Chemical fingerprinting of P. aduncum essential oil. Steam distillation was adopted to obtain the essential
oil, then characterized by GC-MS, NMR analyses.
In vitro bioassays of P. aduncum essential oil. Antimicrobial activities were checked in vitro using proper
agarized media to reach MIC. Antioxidant capacities were checked through DPPH test, ABTS and
photochemiluminescence assays. Born's turbidimetric method and Writhing test were respectively
adopted to check platelet-aggregation and anti-nociceptive properties. Mutagenic, antimutagenic
properties and toxicity were assayed using classical and modified Ames test.
MAIN RESULTS
364 fungal strains were in vitro isolated. Among all, 5 strains performed biotransformations on
acetophenone to (S)-1-phenylethanol, with important yields (78-97%) and enantiomeric excess (78-
100%). Three strains gave also phenols probably by enzymatic reactions (Baeyer-Villiger oxidations). 15
fungal strains gave the lactones (-)-(1S,5R)-2-oxabicyclo[3.3.0]oct-6-en-3-one and (-)-(1R,5S)-3-
oxabicyclo[3.3.0]oct-6-en-2-one from (+/-)-cis-bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-2-en-6-one, probably as result of
monooxygenase activation. Phytochemical characterization of P. aduncum essential oil has evidenced
dillapiol as the most abundant terpene, followed by cis-ocimene, piperitone and terpinen-4-ol. Only cisocimene
and piperitone gave several biotransformation products through dehydrogenation and
hydroxylation reactions. The essential oil has evidenced non-mutagenic properties and interesting
antifungal and antioxidant activities.
CONCLUSIONS
Several endophytic fungal strains from Amazonian plants were isolated and checked for
biotransformations on pure chemicals and on P. aduncum essential oil. Data obtained will be useful for
possible following patents about micro-organisms able to transform pharmaceutically interesting
chemicals. Taxonomical characterization of the most performing fungal strains is still in progress. P.
aduncum essential oil can be considered genotoxically safe and provides interesting antifungal and
antioxidant properties, supporting its ethnomedical use as cicatrising and disinfectant crude drug and
suggesting an extension of its employ as preservative ingredient
Tailored Approach to the Treatment of Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis
PURPOSE:
To develop a standardized clinical grading system for the management of patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and to identify the risk factors associated with a worsened outcome of the disease, including decrease of visual acuity and ocular complications development.
DESIGN:
Retrospective cohort study.
PARTICIPANTS:
A total of 207 consecutive patients with VKC, referred to our Cornea and External Diseases Center from 1997 to 2007, were included in the study. A total of 110 of those patients were included in the follow-up study (range 1-10 years).
METHODS:
Classification and regression tree (CART) analysis was performed to separate the patients into 5 subgroups by therapeutic approach. Regression tree and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed during follow-up to identify predictors of worse visual outcome.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:
Age, gender, duration and course of disease, signs, symptoms, overall symptoms score, history of atopy, markers of allergy, best-corrected visual acuity, and therapy were collected at baseline and during follow-up. The number of relapses and number of patients with decreased visual acuity were also evaluated in the follow-up.
RESULTS:
A decision tree for VKC treatment was developed by CART analysis, and a new clinical grading system was proposed accordingly. Sixteen patients were classified as grade 0 (absence of symptoms and no therapy); 59 patients were classified as grade 1 (presence of symptoms without photophobia, occasional use of anti-allergic eye drop); 74 patients were classified as grade 2 (presence of symptoms including photophobia, daily anti-allergic treatment); 22 patients with superficial punctuate keratopathy (SPK) were classified as grade 3 (daily anti-allergic treatment associated with occasional topical steroid); and 36 patients were classified as grade 4 (diffuse SPK or corneal ulcer; pulsed high-dose topical steroid). A higher number of relapses and a higher baseline grade of VKC were the main predictor factors for worse visual outcome.
CONCLUSIONS:
This grading system allows for identifying the more severe forms of VKC that are at higher risk of recurrences, corneal ulceration, and worse final visual outcome.

[EN] Less than twenty years separate the two collections of tales of the first Florentine followers of Boccaccio: Ser Giovanni and Franco Sacchetti. Nevertheless, the differences between the two authors are clear. Ser Giovanni’s tales are characterized by an almost total lack of interest towards the reality of the times in which the author lives, in contrast to the detailed observation of the daily reality and the moral concern of Sacchetti’s novelle. In some of them, Ser Giovanni’s indifference towards narrated events is reflected in episodes of near-fantasy which are superimposed onto the realistic plan of the story. The purpose of this work is to analyze those novelle in which the fanciful motive is most marked

“Le risa son quasi per tutto convertite in pianto per li difetti umani”. Ignorancia, superstición y decadencia moral en las Trecentonovelle
The varied reality of Florentine society in the second half of the fourteenth century is portrayed in Franco Sacchetti’s Trecentonovelle. This article attempts to show how the author’s voice, at times sarcastic, bitter, severe and sententious, becomes a constant presence in the stories and the backbone of the entire work. It dominates and controls the perfect mosaic of heterogeneous narrative that forms the structure of Sacchetti’s masterpiece and is used by the author to denounce false values or lack of values in the society in which he lives.
Dressing up Modernism: Fashion, Self Perception, and Urbanization in Virginia Woolf’s The New Dress, Mrs. Dalloway, and Orlando: A Biography
Thesis (B.A. in English Language and Literature, Minor in Creative Writing)--John Cabot University, Spring 2025.This thesis explores the significance of fashion and urbanization in the literary works The New Dress, Mrs.Dalloway, and Orlando: A Biography written by the modernist author Virginia Woolf. The thesis aims at concentrating on two theoretical approaches: Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity, to argue how the role of fashion is crucial in the construction of identity and Georg Simmel’s essay Fashion to explore the ways fashion reflects the characters’ identity and urban modernity. Both perspectives reveal how Woolf’s characters fulfill personal and societal expectations through clothes within the changing metropolis of early 20th-century of London. In The New Dress, Woolf portrays Mabel’s deep self doubts and struggle to belong in the high society. In Mrs.Dalloway, clothing illustrates Clarissa’s desire to maintain a relevant appearance in the society and in Orlando a Biography, Woolf investigates gender dynamics and transformation through the fluid relationship between fashion and self identity
Prognostic significance of admission levels of troponin I in patients with acute ischaemic stroke
Objectives: Successful prediction of cardiac complications early in the course of acute ischaemic stroke could have an impact on the clinical management. Markers of myocardial injury on admission deserve investigation as potential predictors of poor outcome from stroke. Methods: We prospectively investigated 330 consecutive patients with acute ischaemic stroke admitted to our emergency department based stroke unit. We analysed the association of baseline levels of cardiac troponin I (cTnl) with (a) all-cause mortality over a six month follow up, and (b) inhospital death or major non-fatal cardiac event ( angina, myocardial infarction, or heart failure). Results: cTnl levels on admission were normal (lower than 0.10 ng/ml) in 277 patients (83.9%), low positive (0.10-0.39 ng/ml) in 35 (10.6%), and high positive (0.40 ng/ml or higher) in 18 (5.5%). Six month survival decreased significantly across the three groups (p<0.0001, log rank test for trend). On multivariate analysis, cTnl level was an independent predictor of mortality (low positive cTnl, hazard ratio (HR) 2.14; 95% CI 1.13 to 4.05; p = 0.01; and high positive cTnl, HR 2.47; 95% CI 1.22 to 5.02; p = 0.01), together with age and stroke severity. cTnl also predicted a higher risk of the combined endpoint "inhospital death or non-fatal cardiac event''. Neither the adjustment for other potential confounders nor the adjustment for ECG changes and levels of CK-MB and myoglobin on admission altered these results. Conclusions: cTnl positivity on admission is an independent prognostic predictor in acute ischaemic stroke. Whether further evaluation and treatment of cTnl positive patients can reduce cardiac morbidity and mortality should be the focus of future research. Preoperatively, the lesions were interpreted as calcified disc herniations. Both patients underwent surgery in which an extended transfacet pedicle-sparing approach was used. Incision of the posterior longitudinal ligament released soft degenerated material. In both cases, histological examination showed abundant degenerative debris along with CPPD crystals. Spinal CPPD deposition is a comparatively rare disease that almost invariably involves the posterior aspect of the spinal canal, typically the ligamentum flavum. The exceptional foraminal location of the lesions reported here, combined with the surgical findings, indicated that the CPPD crystals were deposited on a laterally herniated disc fragment. A distinctive feature in both cases was the soft consistency of the resected tissue. The consistency of the disc material and the location of the lesion in the axial plane (that is, median compared with lateral) are key factors in determining the optimal surgical approach to thoracic disc herniations. In describing consistency, terms such as "calcified" and "hard" have been used interchangeably in the literature. In the cases reported here, what appeared on computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging studies to be densely calcified lesions were shown intraoperatively to be soft herniations. The authors' experience underscores that not all densely calcified herniated discs are hard. Although detection of this discrepancy would have left surgical planning for the lateral disc herniations unchanged, it could have altered planning for centrally or centrolaterally located disc herniations. The introduction of the dependence on time not only via the present, but also, via the past time represents a way, alternative to the introduction of possible non linearities, when the physical problem under investigation cannot be suitably described by any linear model. Specifically, the two different models of a rigid heat conductor, on one side, and of a viscoelastic body, on the other one, are analyzed. In them both, to evaluate the quantities of physical interest a key role is played by the past history of the material and, accordingly, the behaviour of such materials is characterized by suitable constitutive equations where Volterra type kernels appear. Specifically, in the heat conduction problem, the heat flux is related to the history of the temperature-gradient while, in isothermal viscoelasticity, the stress tensor is related to the strain history. Then, the notion of equivalence is considered to single out and associate together all those different thermal histories, or, in turn, strain histories, which produce the same work. The corresponding explicit expressions of the minimum free energy are compared. In the first part of this paper we review two spectral methods in which the above difficulty is faced in different ways. In the first method one uses the analyticity properties of the x-scattering matrix S(k, t) to replace the unknown boundary values by elements of the scattering matrix itself, thus obtaining a closed integro-differential evolution equation for S(k, t). In the second method one uses the analyticity properties of S(k, t) to eliminate the unknown boundary values by a suitable projection, obtaining a nonlinear Riemann Hilbert problem for S(k, t). The second approach allows also to identify in a natural way a known subclass of boundary conditions which gives rise to a spectral formalism based on linear operations (and therefore called "integrable boundary conditions"). In the last part of the paper we present a new method to identify a whole hierarchy of integrable boundary conditions. The aim of our study was to verify, a posteriori, how nutritional status influenced the evolution of PS in a population of elderly subjects hospitalised in a long-term care setting. Materials and Methods: The charts of 125 patients with ulcerative or necrotic pressure ulcers were evaluated retrospectively. For each subject we took note of: PS characteristics (stage, ulcer surface, evolution), clinical characteristics (comorbidity, adverse clinical events, cognitive, functional and nutritional status). Results: In 58 patients (46.4%) there was overall healing of the lesions while in 39 patients (31.2%) we had however an "improvement" of PS. The course of PS was not significantly influenced by the patient's physiological characteristics, by cognitive status or by initial characteristics of PS. Instead, we noticed a significant difference in the course of PS as a function of the level of autonomy and clinical status. The course of PS, and in particular the Healing Index, were influenced by the Nutritional Status and, above all, by its course during the treatment period. Conclusions: The development of PS is multifactorial. Whereas, it is clear that factors other than nutrition influence the risk of developing PS, an important role for nutrition in the development and resolution of PS is suggested. Our data certainly confirm the "Quality indicators for prevention and management of pressure ulcers in vulnerable elders", especially were they say "if a vulnerable elder is identified as at risk for pressure ulcer development and has malnutrition, then nutritional intervention or dietary consultation should be instituted because poor diet, particularly low dietary protein intake, is an independent predictor of pressure ulcer development". In tissue sections, immunostaining for TSP-1 was associated with the fibrous tumour stroma, and showed areas of marked intensity adjacent to the basal membrane of tumour cells. Investigation of TSPI RNA expression showed that, in 10 of 14 cases, TSP-1 mRNA levels were significantly lower in tumour tissue (20-100% reduction; mean = 55% +/- 20; p = 0.001) than in the corresponding normal thyroid. Since it has been reported that HGF can downregulate the expression of TSP-1 mRNA, TSP-1 mRNA levels were measured in 7 primary cultures, established from thyroid papillary carcinomas (TPC), and in I TPC cell line prior to, or after, stimulation with HGF. A marked decrease in TSP-1 mRNA levels was observed after HGF stimulation in 6/7 primary cultures (60-100% decrease (mean = 79 +/- 15%;p = 0.006) and in the TPC cell line; moreover, the decrease in TSP-1 mRNA in cell extracts was associated with a decrease in TSP-1 protein in culture supernatants. The HGF activity was dose dependent and the downregulation lasted for at least 48 h after stimulation. The high-level expression of Met protein, the high-affinity receptor for HGF, in most cases of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid is consistent with the possibility that HGF-Met interaction plays a crucial role in regulating the expression of TSP-1 in this tumour type. In most studies, only a slight decline of C-peptide secretion was observed 12 months after diagnosis; however, no data is available on C-peptide secretion and metabolic control in patients continuing nicotinamide and HT for up to 2 years after diagnosis. Patients and Methods: We retrospectively analysed data from 25 patients (mean age 14.7 years +/- 5 SD) with DM1 in whom nicotinamide at a dose of 25 mg/kg b. wt. was added from diagnosis (<4 weeks) to HT (three injections of regular insulin at meals + one NPH at bed time) and continued for up to 2 years after diagnosis. Data were also analysed from patients (n = 27) in whom HT was introduced at diagnosis and who were similarly followed for 2 years. Baseline C-peptide as well as insulin dose and HbA(1c) levels were evaluated at 12 and 24 months after diagnosis. Results: In the course of the follow-up, patients on nicotinamide + HT or IIT alone did not significantly differ in terms of C-peptide secretion (values at 24 months in the two groups were 0.19 +/- 0.24 nM vs 0.19 +/- 0.13 nM, respectively). Insulin requirement (0.6 +/- 0.3 U/kg/day vs 0.7 +/- 0.2 U/kg/day at 24 months, respectively) did not differ between the two groups. However, HbA(1c) was significantly lower 2 years after diagnosis in patients treated with nicotinamide + HT (6.09 +/- 0.9% vs 6.98 +/- 0.9%, respectively, p <0.01). No adverse effects were observed in patients receiving nicotinamide for 2 years. Conclusion: Implementation of HT with the addition of nicotinamide at diagnosis continued for 2 years improves metabolic control as,assessed by HbA(1c). In both nicotinamide and control patients, no decline in C-peptide was detected 2 years after diagnosis, indicating that IIT preserves C-peptide secretion. We conclude that nicotinamide + HT at diagnosis of DMI prolonged for up to 2 years can be recommended, but longer follow-up is required to determine whether nicotinamide should be continued beyond this period. Methods: The series included 46 newly diagnosed patients with unilateral or bilateral intraocular retinoblastoma (58 eyes) receiving carboplatin/etoposide chemotherapy associated with focal therapy (laser or cryotherapy). The mean follow-up was 53 months (range 11-125). Results: Fifty-one eyes (88%) presented with complete response after four to eight courses of chemotherapy combined with focal treatment. The response rate was 100% in group 1, 94% in group 2, 100% in group 3, 83% in group 4, and 70% in group 5 (5 vs. 1-4, P < 0.03; 5-4 vs. 1-3, P < 0.025). Twenty-nine eyes (57%) relapsed after a mean of 7 months (range 2-36). The relapse rate was 30% in group 1, 27.% in group 2, 67% in group 3, 80% in group 4, and 100% in group 5 (5 vs. 1-4, P < 0.001 ; 4-5 vs. 1-3, P < 0.001). Seven of 18 cases achieved a second complete response with further conservative treatment (total courses 8-14). Twenty-nine eyes (50%) were treated without external-beam radiotherapy or enucleation: 90% in group 1, 69% in group 2, 67% in group 3, 33% in group 4, and 6% in group 5 (5 vs. 1-4, P < 0.01; 5-4 vs. 1-3, P < 0.001). Ten eyes (17%) required external-beam radiotherapy and 21 eyes (36%) enucleation. The ocular salvage rate was 67%. Conclusions: Although all groups of patients with intraocular retinoblastoma responded to carboplatin/etoposide chemotherapy associated with focal therapy, all the cases in group 5 relapsed. This approach is questionable in group 5, in which could be justified to delay aggressive treatment in a very young child. O Homem feminino.
masculino.ABSTRACT - This research focuses on genre in fashion, defending the dissipation of the boundry between clothes for men and clothes for women, intending to stimulate feminine fashion for men through a small collection.
The history of costume and fashion was studied and this knowlege was crossed
with psychologic and sociologic factors. Then the genre positions established through time, as well as their aesthetic and fashion consequences, were analyzed. A small collection of feminine clothes for men that unattatches sex from genre, and achieves an inovative aesthetic composition that is still complementary to the men’s body was created – inspired by Carl Jung’s feminine archetypes and the greek god Hermaphroditus. There was a focus in the feminine universe as oposed to the masculineuniverse, in which we observe garments that remained inaltered through decades and show a masculine tradition no longer compatible with the development seen in the last decades in author design. This resulted in a new masculine aesthetic, intending to leave a
contribute to knowledge and social development, boosting menswear in new
directions, as well as encourage new types of fashion consumers and new
styles; an expansion of the masculine universe
