Preface
This CEUR volume contains the research proposals accepted for presentation at the 13th International
Doctoral Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering (IDoESE 2015), held in Beijing, China, the 21st
of October 2015, as an event integrated in the Empirical Software Engineering International Week
(ESEIW), which remarkably included the world-leading Empirical Software Engineering and
Measurement conference (ESEM 2015).
The objective of the doctoral symposium is to provide junior researchers with the opportunity to present
their work to the empirical software engineering community and receive valuable feedback from
experienced researchers in that community. The symposium also aims at facilitating the exchange of ideas
among young researchers. To do so, experienced members of the empirical software engineering
community serve as symposium advisors and provide feedback to students presenting their work
Unveiling Competition Dynamics in Mobile App Markets through User Reviews
User reviews published in mobile app repositories are essential for
understanding user satisfaction and engagement within a specific market
segment. Manual analysis of reviews is impractical due to the large data
volume, and automated analysis faces challenges like data synthesis and
reporting. This complicates the task for app providers in identifying patterns
and significant events, especially in assessing the influence of competitor
apps. Furthermore, review-based research is mostly limited to a single app or a
single app provider, excluding potential competition analysis. Consequently,
there is an open research challenge in leveraging user reviews to support
cross-app analysis within a specific market segment. Following a case-study
research method in the microblogging app market, we introduce an automatic,
novel approach to support mobile app market analysis. Our approach leverages
quantitative metrics and event detection techniques based on newly published
user reviews. Significant events are proactively identified and summarized by
comparing metric deviations with historical baseline indicators within the
lifecycle of a mobile app. Results from our case study show empirical evidence
of the detection of relevant events within the selected market segment,
including software- or release-based events, contextual events and the
emergence of new competitors
Generating natural language texts from business process models
Process Modeling is a widely used concept for understanding, documenting and also redesigning the operations of organizations. The validation and usage of process models is however affected by the fact that only business analysts fully understand them in detail. This is in particular a problem because they are typically not domain experts. In this paper, we investigate in how far the concept of verbalization can be adapted from object-role modeling to process models. To this end, we define an approach which automatically transforms BPMN process models into natural language texts and combines different techniques from linguistics and graph decomposition in a flexible and accurate manner. The evaluation of the technique is based on a prototypical implementation and involves a test set of 53 BPMN process models showing that natural language texts can be generated in a reliable fashion
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Requirements for a Nutrition Education Demonstrator
[Context and Motivation] Development of innovative ICT-based applications is a complex process involving collaboration of all relevant disciplines. This complexity arises due to differences in terminology, knowledge and often also the ways of working between developers in the disciplines involved. [Question/problem] Advances in each discipline bring a rich design environment of theories, models, methods and techniques. Making a selection from these makes the development of distributed applications very challenging, often requiring a holistic approach to address the needs of the disciplines involved. This paper describes early stage requirements acquisition of a mobile nutrition education demonstrator which supports overweight persons in adopting healthier dietary behaviour. [Principal idea/results] We present a novel way to combine and use known requirements acquisition methods involving a two stage user needs analysis based on scenarios which apply a theory-based model of behavioural change and are onstructed in two phases. The first phase scenarios specify an indicative description reflecting the use of the transtheoretical model of behavioural change. In the second phase, a handshake protocol adds elements of optative system-oriented descriptions to the scenarios such that the intended system can support the indicative description. [Contribution] The holistic and phased approach separates design concerns to which each of the disciplines contributes with their own expertise and domain principles. It preserves the applied domain principles in the design and it bridges gaps in terminology, knowledge and ways of working
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
