    Power And Energy Demand to Support E-Mobility on Highway: The Italian Case Study

    In recent years, market trends are confirming the increasing use of electric vehicles for private mobility. The use of such vehicles is inevitably affecting highway contexts as well. Therefore, highway network operators need to plan for the installation of adequate infrastructure to enable and manage the growing demand for fast charging expected in the coming years. This paper aims to assess the impact that this charging demand may have on the service areas (SAs) of the highway network operated by Autostrade per l'Italia. Starting from available traffic data, this paper proposes a methodology to forecast, for each service area, the future charging needs of EVs on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis. The analysis considers both the energy and the power that needs to be made available to ensure charging during daily traffic peaks. The results show that the impact generated by EVs will be generally significant, especially in terms of power demands with peaks between two and three megawatts. The methodology developed is entirely general and therefore applicable for similar planning in other highway or suburban roadway contexts. The validity of the developed methodology and the made assumptions have been preliminary confirmed through an initial set of data collected from one of the charging stations installed in one representative service area

    Analysis of Possible Scenarios on the Future Development of Electric Mobility: Focus on the Italian Context

    This paper presents an overview of the development of the electric vehicle market, analyzing global and European trends with particular attention to the Italian market. Starting from the historical data collected, the work shows different development scenarios for the different types of electric vehicles up to 2030. The work proposes four different development scenarios which consider not only the growth in the overall number of EVs but also the type of technology that will take over. The results indicate that the number of electric vehicles on the Italian market will be between three and six million units by 2030

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     MEK inhibition exacerbates ischemic calcium imbalance and neuronal cell death in rat cortical cultures

    Interruption in the brain's blood supply leads to an ischemic condition, which is characterised by a depletion of energy phosphates and related failure of ionic pumps, increased extracellular potassium, neuronal depolarisation and release of excitatory amino acids, e.g. glutamate. The subsequent activation of N-methyl-d-aspartate glutamate receptors triggers a wide range of intracellular signals, including the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. Activation and inhibition of the MAPK/extracellular regulated kinases (ERK) pathway are both reported to be neuroprotective in conditions associated with excitotoxic injury. The present study was designed to explore the involvement of this signalling pathway in cultured rat cortical neurons subjected to chemically-induced ischemia obtained by coupling the mitochondrial toxin 3-nitropropionic acid with glucose deprivation. Loss of neuronal viability, reduced neuronal energy state (ATP level and mitochondrial membrane potential) and increased cytoplasmic mitochondrial calcium were all observed. The NMDA antagonist MK-801 counteracted these effects, suggesting a glutamate-dependent ischemic cell death. Addition of U0126, a selective inhibitor of MAPK kinase, exacerbated this neuronal cell death. However, non-significant changes in activated cAMP response element-binding protein were seen. The rise in cytoplasmic calcium under ischemic conditions was associated with neuronal cell swelling. Both swelling and increase in cytoplasmic calcium were exacerbated and prevented by U0126 and MK-801, respectively. These data suggest that in this ischemic model the MAPK/ERK pathway might exert a regulatory effect on calcium entry independent from gene expression

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
