This paper addresses the topic of architectural, social and economic regeneration of urban areas under-
going transformation or decay, from a cultural development perspective. The paper focuses on the employment
of art and culture as tools for the urban regeneration, describing the reuse project of the former warehouses of the
railway station of Noto, developed as part of an innovative capacity building training course in the context of the
PNRR. This contribution aims, therefore, to communicate the urban culture of the city of Noto, combining in the
discussion as well as in the project, architecture, guidelines for the reuse of architectural heritage, environmental
design and cultural management strategies. The redevelopment project plans to offer to the city of Noto hybrid
spaces of confrontation, exchange and residence, replacing the dissipative model of soil resources, quality and
opportunity, with a new value-generating paradigm of quality and local identity
Inclusive innovation and the role of partnerships: The case of Semi di Libertà
Purpose – This chapter aims to understand how partnerships and networks can aid the development and growth of organizations whose goal is to foster social inclusion along the agro-food supply chain, with particular reference to the social entrepreneurship sector. Methodology/approach – The chapter draws on a framework proposed by Newth and Woods (2014) to identify the main drivers of resistance to the development of social entrepreneurship. The empirical evidence is based on a single case, involving an Italian social enterprise, Semi di Liberta`, which produces high-quality artisan beer. Case material included an analysis of organization documents and interviews with key actors. Findings – The case study shows how Semi di Liberta` faced different types of resistance, related to formal and informal institutions and market drivers, and leveraged partnerships with other actors in the ecosystem. Some of these partnerships were planned a priori to overcome specific problems (e.g., the Prison’s Authority, Mastri Birrai). Other partnerships were developed “by chance” (e.g., “peer” associations) but turned out to be particularly important to deal with the above resistances. Research limitations/implications – The case study methodology prevents the authors from generalizing too far past the obtained results. However, key elements from the case, such as the relevance of “spontaneous” partnerships and those with “peer” organizations, could be taken into account for similar initiatives in different contexts. Originality/value – Recent literature has highlighted the relevance of partnerships in scaling social enterprises but has not explored the dynamics whereby these partnerships are created and developed. This chapter provides some preliminary evidence of how partnerships can be used to overcome the resistance limiting the growth of social entrepreneurship and the sustainability of socially inclusive initiatives
Rapid screening of drugs of abuse and their metabolites by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry: application to urinalysis
This paper describes a rapid gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric (GC/MS) screening method
for the detection of drugs of abuse and/or their metabolites in urine. Synthetic stimulants, opiates,
cocaine metabolites, cannabinoids—and specifically the acid metabolite of tetrahydrocannabinol
(THC-COOH)—can be simultaneously extracted by a single liquid/liquid separation step, at alkaline
pH, and assayed as trimethylsilyl derivatives by GC/MS in SIM (selected ion monitoring)
mode. All the analytes show a good linearity (R2>0.99 for most of the considered substances) in
the range 25–1000 ng/mL, with a good reproducibility of both the retention times (CV% <0.7) and
the relative abundances of the characteristic diagnostic ions (CV% <13). The limit of detection
(LOD) of the method is 25 ng/mL of target compound in human urine for most of the substances
investigated, 3 ng/mL for THC-COOH, and 10 ng/mL for norbuprenorphine. Validation of the
method allows its application to different fields of forensic analytical toxicology, including antidoping
analysi
Shallow-water sponge grounds along the Apulian coast (central Mediterranean Sea)
Sponge grounds are complex three-dimensional benthic habitats dominated by sponges. These sponge-dominated assemblages have been reported worldwide, from the intertidal zone to the deep sea. In shallow euphotic waters, dense sponge aggregations have been mainly found in tropical areas, and their presence is in some cases related to environmental degradation and coral decline. The Mediterranean Sea is globally recognised as a biodiversity hotspot, where light-exposed rocky reefs are typically dominated by photophilous algae. However, high local anthropogenic pressures, coupled with climate change, are leading to the reorganisation of benthic communities and the occurrence of regime shifts in several areas. Here we report the first description of unusual, shallow-water sponge grounds in Mediterranean light-exposed rocky reefs, in an area previously impacted by the destructive date-mussel fishery. These assemblages, found along the Apulian coast (central Mediterranean Sea), are now (2017) characterised by a mean coverage of sponges ranging between 3% and 33%, with maximum values up to 85%. Variation in the structure of assemblages and in the abundance of individual taxa between depths has been tested by multivariate and univariate techniques. The spatial characterisation has been complemented with the taxonomic analysis of the sponge assemblages, which resulted in the identification of 14 sponge taxa. These findings are compared with results of previous research in the same area and discussed with particular reference to the potential variables involved in sponge dominance and spatial distribution in the present system and elsewhere
Method development for the identification of methoxpropamine, 2-fluoro-deschloroketamine and deschloroketamine and their main metabolites in blood and hair and forensic application
The constant increase of new psychoactive substances, often available on the illicit drug market as 'research chemicals', poses a concern for public health and a significant analytical and legislative challenge. Β-keto-arylcyclohexamines represent a class of dissociative anesthetics recently introduced on the market of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS). There is still a lack of information about the pharmacological activity of many of such substances, usually depending on the potential chemical modifications introduced to circumvent the law. Furthermore, their intake may not be fully intentional, since consumers do not always have knowledge of the content of online purchases.
The present study describes the characterization by liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS), using a benchtop Orbitrap instrument, of the novel ketamine analogues methoxpropamine, 2-fluoro-deschloroketamine and deschloroketamine, found in the post-mortem blood and hair samples from a forensic case of suicide by fall from height, and of some of their metabolites. This allowed the development of analytical methods for the determination of both the β-keto-arylcyclohexamines and the metabolites in LC-HRMS and in LC-MS/MS, providing a starting point for studying their toxicokinetics
