Fostering corporate sustainability in tourism management through social values within collective value co-creation processes
Collective value co-creation is not fully explored in management research. The phenomenon of social value co-creation has not been investigated in detail either, particularly regarding sustainable tourism management. In our work, we investigate the role of social values within the collective value co-creation process, as a key factor for building sustainable tourism management practices able to generate sustainable benefits to all stakeholders. The study setting is Sardex, a complementary currency community based in Sardinia (Italy). By adopting a qualitative methodology, and through face-to-face interviews, the entrepreneurs’ relationships were analysed using dialogue, trust, and reciprocity as core factors of value co-creation within the hospitality and tourism firms grouped in Sardex. Particularly, we explored whether, and to what extent, reciprocity was the salient factor in the process of value co-creation. Findings show that social values, and especially reciprocity, are the backbone of value co-creation: they foster corporate social orientation, which brings together corporate social responsibility and sustainability, and represent our contribution to enrichen theoretical and practical perspectives in this multidimensional field
Simultaneous determination of polyphenolic compounds in red and white grapes grown in Sardinia by high performance liquid chromatography-electron spray ionisation-mass spectrometry
A new method for the identification and the quantification of nonanthocyanin phenolic compounds from six Vitis Vinifera grape varieties native to Sardinia (three native: Vermentino, Malvasia and Cannonau and three non-native types: Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon; Argiolas vineyard) was developed. This rapid and selective method employs LC/ESI-MS in negative mode. Different solvents extraction and different sorbents for purification were compared to the direct analysis of the initial extracts without further sample preparation. A total of 54 phenolic compounds were identified either in the freeze-dried skins or seeds, including nonflavonoids (hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids and their derivatives, stilbenes) and flavonoids (flavanols, flavonols, dihydroxyflavonols). Effect of a hydrocolloid dressing on first intention healing surgical wounds in the dog: a pilot study
Objectives To evaluate the efficacy of a hydrocolloid dressing for the treatment of surgical wounds in dogs. Methods Six healthy young female dogs of medium size and different breed underwent ovariohysterectomy. Histological evaluation was performed on biopsies taken from the edges of the wounds at day 7. The dressing was applied on one half of the wound according to manufacturer's instructions; the second half served as control. Biopsy specimens were fixed in a 10% formalin buffered solution pH 7.4, paraffin embedded and stained with haematoxylin and eosin. For clinical assessment, the presence and quality of exudate, erythema of the surrounding area, swelling and correct apposition of the wound margins were evaluated. Results The hydrocolloid dressing was easy to use. The clinical quality of the treated skin wounds was superior to the non-treated ones. Comparison of histological features between treated and untreated wounds showed a more regular organisation of the granulation tissue in the treated wounds, with fibroblasts being aligned parallel to the overlying epidermis. The number of inflammatory cells and the extension of granulation tissue were less prominent and less widespread in treated compared to untreated wounds. Conclusion The dressing performed very well in terms of adhesiveness and flexibility. It was useful in the management of surgical wounds to avoid contamination and ameliorate the epithelialisation rate and granulation tissue morphology of the surgical scar

Biological activities and nutraceutical potentials of water extracts from different parts of Cynomorium coccineum L. (Maltese Mushroom)
Maltese Mushroom (Cynomorium coccineum L.) is a non-photosynthetic plant that has been used in traditional medicine for many centuries.
In this paper, water extracts from the whole plant, external layer and peeled plant were studied to determine the main components responsible for its biological activities, i.e., its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-tyrosinase activities; its cytotoxicity against mouse melanoma B16F10 cells; and its pro-erectile activity in adult male rats. The results of electron transfer and hydrogen transfer assays showed that the antioxidant activity was mainly due to anthocyanins in the external layer, whereas the external layer and peeled plant extracts both inhibited the microbial growth of several Gram-positive strains. In contrast, the whole plant extract had the highest anti-tyrosinase activity and exhibited pro-erectile activity when administered subcutane-ously. Overall, this study elucidated which parts of Maltese Mushroom are responsible for its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-tyrosinase activities and thus which extracts have potential for use in nutraceutical formulation
Sex-specific effects of NLRP6/AVR and ADM loci on susceptibility to essential hypertension in a Sardinian population.
"Coronary artery disease, heart failure, fatal arrhythmias, stroke, and renal disease are the most common causes of mortality for humans, and essential hypertension remains a major risk factor. Elucidation of susceptibility loci for essential hypertension has been difficult because of its complex, multifactorial nature involving genetic, environmental, and sex- and age-dependent nature. We investigated whether the 11p15.5 region syntenic to rat chromosome 1 region containing multiple blood pressure quantitative trait loci (QTL) detected in Dahl rat intercrosses harbors polymorphisms that contribute to susceptibility\/resistance to essential hypertension in a Sardinian population. Initial testing performed using microsatellite markers spanning 18 Mb of 11p15.5 detected a strong association between D11S1318 (at 2.1 Mb, P = 0.004) and D11S1346 (at 10.6 Mb, P = 0.00000004), suggesting that loci in close proximity to these markers may contribute to susceptibility in our Sardinian cohort. NLR family, pyrin domain containing 6\/angiotensin-vasopressin receptor (NLRP6\/AVR), and adrenomedullin (ADM) are in close proximity to D11S1318 and D11S1346, respectively; thus we tested single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within NLRP6\/AVR and ADM for their association with hypertension in our Sardinian cohort. Upon sex stratification, we detected one NLRP6\/AVR SNP associated with decreased susceptibility to hypertension in males (rs7948797G, P = 0.029; OR = 0.73 [0.57-0.94]). For ADM, sex-specific analysis showed a significant association between rs4444073C, with increased susceptibility to essential hypertension only in the male population (P = 0.006; OR = 1.44 [1.13-1.84]). Our results revealed an association between NLRP6\/AVR and ADM loci with male essential hypertension, suggesting the existence of sex-specific NLRP6\/AVR and ADM variants affecting male susceptibility to essential hypertension.
Strong minimization of biological sludge production and enhancement of phosphorus bioavailability with a thermophilic biological fluidized bed reactor
Identify sustainable biological sewage sludge (BSS) management represents a current challenge. In this work, pre-thickened BSS taken from a large-scale urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was fed continuously for about 9 months to a semi-industrial scale thermophilic biological fluidized bed reactor (TBFBR) operating in alternate conditions. The BSS treated in TBFBR was strongly reduced (89–92%) and the production was evaluated in 0.0007–0.0023 kg kgCODremoved−1 d−1 and 0.0004–0.0014 kg kgCODremoved−1 d−1 of TS and VS, respectively. The 92% of the P-PO43- and P-org precipitated in inorganic form and accumulated in thermophilic biological sludge (TBS). In basic soils with chelating activity, phosphorus contained in TBS presented a higher bioavailability (84.0 ± 25.3%) with respect to untreated sludge. The analysis of four diverse scenarios highlighted that TBFBR located after pre-thickening could save 73–96% of operating costs with respect to current situation
