Neither here nor elsewhere: displacement devices in representing the supernatural

    No full text
How might the supernatural be represented in those religious paintings that imply continuity between the virtual space of painting and the real space of the beholder? Such an implied continuity might be thought to threaten a necessary distance demanded of religious works. This paper examines how a number of Italian paintings employ strategies for representing the supernatural through displacement devices that open up a 'gap' within perception - an inviolable space that is implied as being outside of normal spatiotemporal relations. The contention is that these distancing devices are dependent upon an imagined spatial proximity that is established but then broken. They exploit inherent ambiguities as to where a painting is relative to its beholder, through the withholding of perspectival distance and positional cues for a discrete section of the work

Nuove fonti della Francesca da Rimini

    No full text
Abstract · Uncovered sources on Francesca da Rimini · This paper oπers a selective commentary on d’Annunzio’s Francesca da Rimini, focusing on newly uncovered sources emerged from the critical edition. Particular attention is given to previously unexamined connections with already known sources, such as the index of the Tavola Ritonda, Sacchetti’s Novelle, the Dizionario della lingua italiana Tommaseo-Bellini, and especially Tommaseo’s Greek and Illyrian Canti popolari, as well as to new parallels with De Lollis’s Pro Sordello and, most significantly, Boccaccio’s Filocolo

    No full text

Changing Work Values: Beyond Hustle Culture

    No full text
For a long time, working culture has been associated with hustling aspects, stressing productivity, constant devotion, and presentialism. Recently, alternative tendencies valuing more personal satisfaction, well-being, and self-realization in different domains of life other than work have resulted in emerging phenomena in contrast to the dominant hustle culture. These phenomena include the Great Resignation, “boomerang employees,” “quiet quitting”, and “quiet thriving.” While cultural changes were already in place, as suggested by data from the European Values Study (EVS), the Covid-19 pandemic served as a catalyst for the shift in values that drives workers to reassess the meaning of and satisfaction with their work. Building on Bauman’s perspective on societal change, this contribution aims to offer a sociological interpretation of the ongoing dynamics underlying the change in work values

Effect of perfusion index on oxygen reserve index accuracy in estimating arterial oxygen tension in anesthetized dogs: Data reanalysis

    No full text
Multi-wave CO-oximetry, utilizing the oxygen reserve index (ORi), estimates arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) in mild hyperoxemia, between 100 and 200 mmHg, and concurrently quantifies local perfusion at the measurement site using the perfusion index (PI). This study explores how variations in PI influence the accuracy of ORi in estimating PaO2 in anesthetized dogs. Data from 37 mechanically ventilated dogs were retrospectively reanalyzed using a different approach. ORi and PI values were collected using a CO-oximeter. The data were categorized into four groups based on PI quartiles. In each group, the relationship between ORi and PaO2 was assessed using linear regression analysis, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) investigated the diagnostic performance of ORi in detecting PaO2 > 150 mmHg. Strong relationships between ORi and PaO2 were observed in groups with PI values 150 mmHg decre..

The essay examines painting in the Basilica of Loreto from the 1400s to the entire 1700s, offering a comprehensive overview that for the first time reads comprehensively the basilica's various pictorial and decorative interventions, the interpretation of which is made difficult by the fragmentary state of what has been saved after the late 19th-century restorations. A polyphonic picture emerges as the demands of a prestigious patronage, represented by popes, cardinals, rulers, and nobles, are expressed by resorting to artists of heterogeneous origin and culture, largely foreign to the context of the Marche region

Cultural Heritage and Geology: The Example of the Mascheroni Fountain and Its Qanat in the Rupestrian Town of Laterza (MurGEopark UGGp and “Terra delle Gravine” Regional Park, Puglia, Southern Italy)

Water resources allow us to trace the history of many of our towns. In settings with limited surface water, a very interesting case study is represented by the presence/preservation of water in the rupestrian towns located along the rocky walls of canyons (locally named “gravine”) southward, cutting the Murge karst area (Puglia, Southern Italy). In some sections of their valleys, soft rocks, easy to dig, are exposed, and, along the canyon flanks, favored the development of rupestrian towns (cities where dwellings are carved in these soft rocks). Here, before the construction of aqueducts that now bring water from the “distant” Apennines (at least 30 km away), the building of historical fountains, in addition to the collection of rainwater in cisterns, testifies to the presence of an aquifer now undervalued as a local water resource useful for human settlements in a predominantly karst territory. Our study regards an aquifer feeding the Mascheroni Fountain (Great Masks Fountain) through a short qanat that allowed for the development of the old town of Laterza, in Puglia (Southern Italy). Starting from the attractiveness of the ancient fountain, the connection between geological features of the area and the ancestral origin of the city could be proposed to a large audience, representing an intriguing opportunity to develop themes useful for geotouristic purposes and disseminating concepts about sustainability and the importance of preserving local renewable resources. This topic is of paramount importance since the town of Laterza is located at the boundary between the UNESCO MurGEopark and the “Terra delle Gravine” Regional Park, making it the ideal starting point for both parks
