Online Input and EMI Pedagogy in the COVID-19 Pandemic in Italy
No full textThis article focuses on input in online EMI during the COVID-19 pandemic and identifies and describes its salient features. It presents results from a study carried out in Northern Italian universities. The research uses mixed methods to investigate the topic, triangulating data from questionnaires sent out to lecturers, recordings of video-lectures, and interviews with lecturers. The interviews use the technique of video-stimulated recall, or retrospective interview, in which respondents verbalise their thoughts about a task after carrying it out (Dornyei, 2007: 148). In this case, participants watched the recordings of their own lectures and were asked to comment on their thought processes regarding input. The lectures were of the synchronous video conferencing lecture (SVL) variety, in which instruction occurs in real time and there is interaction between teachers and students (Martin, Ahlgrim-Delzell & Budhrani’s, 2017: 3).
Results gave insight into features of EMI online input and indicated discrepancies between what the lecturers think and what they do in class. The study has implications for online EMI teaching well beyond the pandemic, given that blended learning models are increasingly adopted in higher education and EMI lecturers are concerned with how to make their lecturing more effective

The control group consists of L1-taught classes (Italian), whereas the experimental group consists of L2-taught classes (English). Students’ marks in two comparable written exams are analysed. Data are complemented with interviews with the lecturers. The results show that in some instances the two groups differ significantly as regards the acquisition of content

No full textThe territorial competitiveness both at the regional and sub-regional scale, has often seen the attractiveness of the European funds as a competition between the different administrative aggregations of the territory. This competition was strongly influenced by the skills developed locally at all levels, in particular between the Provinces and the Region, on the one hand, and between the Provinces and the European Commission, on the other. Focusing its analysis mainly on the interaction between administrative reorganization of the State, ability to attract European funding on a competitive basis and new regional regulations on tourism, this paper aims to promote thoughts and provide a critical framework about potential future scenarios at the sub-regional scale (Unions of Municipalities, Large Areas, Metropolitan Areas, etc.). To this end, the case study of the Emilia-Romagna Region will be used. The identification of administrative boundaries and transversal or sectorial territorial aggregations with respect to tourist destinations, overlaps the parallel construction of new territorial economic aggregations whose main objective is the attraction of visitor flows, but which only in rare cases succeed in replacing the old provinces in the ability to attract financial flows of European origi
