Mais qui sont les enfants d'immigrés ? Peut-on les définir, les identifier, les dénombrer ? Faut-il les distinguer des autres élèves ? Quelle pertinence accorder à cette distinction ? L'école doit-elle en tenir compte ? Pour quoi ?Boulot Serge, Boyzon-Fradet Danielle. De qui parle-t-on ?. In: Hommes et Migrations, n°1146, septembre 1991. A l'école, l'intégration. pp. 4-8

Boulot Serge, Boyzon-Fradet Danielle. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Toxicity of ribosome-inactivating proteins-containing immunotoxins to a human bladder carcinoma cell line

    No full text
Immunotoxins were prepared by linking the type I ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIP) momordin I, pokeweed antiviral protein from seeds (PAP-S) and saporin-S6 to the 48-127 monoclonal antibody (MAb) recognising a glycoprotein (gp54) expressed on all human bladder tumours tested and on human bladder carcinoma cell lines, in particular on the T24 cell line. T24 cells required a 2 hr contact with immunotoxins to ensure binding and endocytosis. A time course of exposure, followed by further incubation without the immunotoxins, showed that maximum inhibition of protein synthesis by T24 cells was reached after 2 hr of contact followed by 3 days without the immunotoxins. Under optimal conditions, 48-127/RIP immunotoxins at nanomolar concentrations inhibited by 50% protein synthesis of target T24 cells. No toxicity was observed if (i) target cells were treated with non-conjugated RIP, (ii) target cells were treated with momordin I- or PAP-S containing immunotoxins made with an irrelevant antibody and (iii) a non-target cell line was treated with the same 2 RIP conjugated to 48-127 antibody. The in vitro selective toxicity of these immunotoxins encourages further studies in view of a possible use in clinical trials for the local therapy of human bladder carcinomas

L'Ecole française : égalité des chances et logiques d'une institution

The French school: equality of chances and institutional logic Serge BOULOT and Danielle BOYZON-FRADET In debates pertaining to society, immigration and school are integrally linked. The latter is presented as a powerful agent of integration. The presence of foreign children in French schools is not a novel phenomenom. And yet, the school has undergone mutations so far-reaching as to disqualify reasonings based upon schemas dating from the past. Even if failure at school is deemed to an ever-greater extent an injustice, inequality in compensatory measures is steadily less acceptable in the overall society. Four examples (the teaching of « regional » languages and cultures, classes of welcome for foreign students, the teaching of « languages and cultures of origin », and high priority education zones) show that the introduction of discrimination — even if it be positive, a form of « affirmative action » - - inevitably leads its beneficiaries to run risks of marginality and stigmatizing. Adaptor synthesis for real-time components

    No full text
Building a real-time system from reusable or COTS components introduces several problems, mainly related to compatibility, communication, and QoS issues. We propose an approach to automatically derive adaptors in order to solve black-box integration anomalies, when possible. We consider black-box components equipped with an expressive interface that specifies the interaction behavior with the expected environment, the component clock, as well as latency, duration, and controllability of the component’s actions. The principle of adaptor synthesis is to coordinate the interaction behavior of the components in order to avoid possible mismatches, such as deadlocks. Each adaptor models the correct assembly code for a set of components. Our approach is based on labeled transition systems and Petri nets, and is implemented in a tool called SynthesisRT. We illustrate it through a case study concerning a remote medical care system

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
