    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Innovative Alcoholic Drinks Obtained by Co-Fermenting Grape Must and Fruit Juice

    In this study, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay musts, and fruit juices from cherry, kiwi, peach, and strawberry were co-fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae EC1118 and Torulasporadelbrueckii UMY196 at two different proportions (80:20 (v/v) and 60:40 (v/v)). The most pleasant fruit-based drink was obtained with Cabernet Sauvignon must and kiwi juice in a proportion of 60:40 and fermented with T.delbrueckii. This beverage was produced in higher volume to simulate a scale-up, and the aromatic profile, sensory description, and consumer acceptability were determined. The most powerful odorants of the kiwi-based drink were ethyl octanoate, phenylethanal, ethyl hexanoate, vinyl-guaiacol, benzaldehyde, and nonanal, for which the odor activity values were 21.1, 3.3, 2.6, 2.2, 1.9, and 1.6, respectively. These findings were in accordance with the sensory analysis, since the emerged descriptors were fruity (ethyl octanoate), honey and floral (phenylethanal), apple and peach (ethyl hexanoate), and citrus (nonanal). The consumers judged the kiwi-based drink acceptable (67%) and 39% of them would buy it. The reliable fermentation of a grape must/fruit juice was demonstrated. The kiwi-based drink represents an innovative and pleasant beverage with a positive impact on sustainability as its production can limit the loss of fresh fruits, as well as contribute to the enological field

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Effect of carboxymethylcellulose on tartrate stability, colouring matter stability, chromatic characteristics, and phenolic composition of red wines

Universidade do Porto, Faculdade de CiênciasCurrently, the treatment of tartaric stabilization with carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is recommended only for white wines as it is considered that it can cause colouring matter instability in red wines. In fact, the OIV limits CMC use only to white wines and sparkling wines. This study aims to test the effectiveness of CMC in unstable red wines, as a tartaric stabilizer and especially evaluate its effect on wine color matter stability, phenolic composition and turbidity. For that, different red wines made from different Vitis vinifera L. varieties, both international (Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon), and Portuguese autochthonous (Trincadeira and Touriga National), as well a blend of all four varieties, were treated with CMC in the doses of 100 mg/L and 200 mg/L, comprising a control modality. The different experimental modalities were prepared in duplicate in 0.75 L glass bottles. After treatment all the wines became stable at tartaric level but, despite the general physicochemical characteristics after treatment remained unchanged, were observed for all wines colouring matter instabily and loss of color, although some varieties showed different instability trends. The study seems to confirm what has been considered so far that CMC is not suitable for the treatment of tartaric stabilization on red wines. Considering that according to recent studies conducted the colouring matter instability observed in these wines is probably due to a chemical interaction between CMC-polyphenols-proteins, other studies could be conducted including the evaluation of protein and polysaccharide composition, using different varieties that could have a different protein and polysaccharide profile.O tratamento de estabilização tartárica com carboximetilcelulose (CMC) é recomendado apenas em vinhos brancos, uma vez que se considera que nos vinhos tintos poderá conduzir à instabilidade da matéria corante. De facto, a OIV limita a utilização da CMC apenas a vinhos brancos e vinhos espumantes. Este estudo pretende testar a eficácia de CMC na estabilização tartárica e avaliar especialmente o efeito do tratamento com CMC na estabilidade da matéria corante, composição fenólica e turbidez de vinhos tintos. Para tal, vários vinhos instáveis sob o ponto de vista tartárico, produzidos a partir de variedades Vitis vinifera L., internacionais (Syrah e Cabernet Sauvignon), autóctones portugueses (Trincadeira e Touriga Nacional), assim como um lote das quatro variedades, foram utilizados no ensaio experimental. Os diferentes vinhos foram tratados com CMC nas doses de 100 mg/L and 200 mg/L, incluindo umamodalidade experimental de controlo. Os ensaios foram realizados em duplicado, em garrafas de vidro de 0.75 L. Após o tratamento todos os vinhos ficaram estáveis ao nível tartárico mas, apesar das características químico-físicas gerais após o tratamento permanecerem inalteradas, foram observadas para todos os vinhos instabilidade da matéria corante e diminuição da intensidade da cor, de diferente magnitude de variação de acordo com a casta. O estudo parece confirmar que a CMC não é adequada para a estabilização tartárica de vinhos tintos. Considerando que, de acordo com estudos recentes realizados este instabilidade da matéria corante observada nestes vinhos é provavelmente devida a uma interacção química entre CMC-polifenóis-proteínas, os estudos futuros deverão contemplar o conteúdo proteico e polissacarídico dos vinhos, envolvendo diferentes variedades com diferenças ao nível da composição proteica e polissacarídica.N/

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
