Cognitive IoT platform for fog computing industrial applications
In this paper, we propose a fog computing (FC) application for industrial internet of things (IIoT). The need for the distributed intelligence application to the edge of the IIoT, achieved by fog computing paradigm, is first pointed out. To provide such a distributed intelligence, we propose the application of the cognitive IoT concept. A platform is deployed named cognitive IoT platform. A detailed presentation of the functional architecture is provided highlighting the required distributed intelligence through the cognitive agent application as key enabler for the embedded intelligence. In the sequel, we provide a particular FC application with a particular solution for predictive maintenance (PdM) in smart factory application. Experimental setup and tests are carried out using the platform in order to provide PdM-as-a service. The proof of concept follows with the corresponding results that demonstrate a real-world fog computing solution to the edge of an overall IoT architecture.</p
Distributed control plane for safe cooperative vehicular cyber physical systems
Cooperative vehicular cyber physical systems build a group of entities that can accomplish a cooperative task using the distributed control approaches. To this end, such a cooperative task can be coordinated and managed by a distributed control plane that will be able to encapsulate all the required functionality in a layered architecture providing the required interoperability. Here, the authors propose such a distributed control plane that consists of the cooperative awareness layer, thecommunication layer and the distributed control layer. Wireless communications play an important role for the mobility provision, taking into account different constraints in order to provide high reliability and low latency. A simulation environment is considered with a leader–follower control format, where the reliability is evaluated. Further, a distributed safety monitoring approach is devised, given a control diagram and mapping of the events to the different components. The event monitoring relies on the self-triggered approach, where a use case is evaluated to highlight the impact of the input and output delays to the model predictive control component of the overall distributed control diagram including the calculation of the number of triggered events.<br/
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Energy Efficient Spectrum Allocation and Mode Selection for D2D Communications in Heterogeneous Networks
In this paper, we consider a heterogeneous network consisting of both macro Base Station (MBS) and pico Base Stations (PBSs) in order to provide a spectrum allocation and mode selection in device-to-device (D2D) communications. A number of Component Carriers (CC) are considered available for allocation to the MBS and PBSs that are being utilized through carrier aggregation (CA) while mode selection decisions are made by each BS in order to balance between power consumption minimization and UE data rate requirements. A power minimization (energy-efficient) problem is formulated in order to provide a joint spectrum allocation and mode selection solution. This problem is solved using a state of the art optimization method known as proximal algorithm. First, a non-cooperative (centralized) solution is provided and second, a cooperative (distributed) employing distributed proximal algorithm is devised reducing the induced complexity. The cooperative solution is achieved by implementing distributed alternating direction method of multipliers (D-ADMM). Simulation results are carried out for all cases that reveal the energy efficient spectrum allocation and mode selection according under certain channels' conditions that can balance between achieving high data rate requirements and power minimization. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
