    No full text
This thesis by publication investigates how firms can leverage AI to enhance their e-commerce capabilities. The main research question it sought to answer is: how can AI be understood and leveraged to improve business processes, insights, and customer engagement in e-commerce? The research topic is motivated by two main aspects. First, it is motivated by the growing need for firms to understand and learn how to capitalise on e-commerce investments that meet their customers' current needs. Second, it is inspired by the urgent need to explain the modern-day AI concept to managers and how it can be leveraged to enhance their e-commerce capabilities. These motivations led to one main research question: how can AI be understood and leveraged to enhance processes, business insights, and customer engagement in e-commerce? This main question was broken down into three specific research questions: (i) how can managers understand AI in a relevant way for value creation? (ii) how can firms leverage AI to improve their e-commerce processes and business insight? (iii) how can firms leverage AI to enhance customer engagement? This thesis adopts a vast methodological approach due to the topic's density and complexity. It uses exploratory, explanatory, and descriptive research types to explain the what, why, and how factors affecting firms' ability to create value by using AI in e-commerce. Quantitative and qualitative research strategies were adopted, depending on the research question. Documents (literature review data and data from practitioner sources), bibliometric data, interview data, and survey data were used to conduct this research. They were analysed using various techniques: content analysis, bibliometric analysis, PLS-SEM, and FsQCA. Furthermore, several theories were mobilised to explain the results: dynamic capability theory, theory of affordances, Goldberg’s Big Five Factors of personality, and a contextualised theory of reasoned action (TRA-privacy). The results of this thesis are summarised and presented by research question. RQ1: how can managers understand AI in a relevant way for value creation? A perspective of AI that can be relevant to managers incorporates the perception, comprehension, action, and learning dimensions of intelligence found in AI. Using this lens, AI can be categorised into two main categories: one centred around social interactions (frontend AI) and the other that is data-centred (backend AI). Both of them used together can create significant business value for firms. RQ2: How can firms leverage AI to improve their e-commerce processes and business insight? Firms can leverage AI to improve their e-commerce processes and business insights by using (backend) AI for intelligent automation and decision support. Automated analytics capability (AAC) is a dynamic capability that firms could develop to meet this objective. It implies using advanced AI techniques to automate firms' analytics capabilities. RQ3: How can firms leverage AI to enhance customer engagement? Firms can leverage AI to enhance customer engagement by leveraging (frontend) AI to enhance customer experience. This thesis contributes to research on AI's business value, a trending debate in both researcher and practitioner forums. Specifically, it contributes to IS debates on AI's business value from the manager and consumer perspectives, the strategic use of AI to create business value, and how AI can serve as a value creation source through customer engagement and automation. In marketing research, it contributes to debates about AI transforming marketing and retailing processes. It also contributes to understanding and anticipating voice shopping behaviours, experiences, and customers' engagement. Finally, it contributes to business & management research on AI by proposing an alternative interpretation of the concept of AI that could facilitate the use of AI for realistic digital transformation

Artificial intelligence as an enabler of agri-food supply chain resilience

    No full text
Supply chain organisations have endured increasing levels of pressure in recent years due to unprecedented levels of uncertainty. These issues are exacerbated for agri-food supply chain (AFSC) organisations, as they are faced with meeting demanding food production targets (United Nations, 2022), while combating issues such as limited farmland, reduction of natural resources, and climate change (Spanaki et al., 2021). While disruptions are costly for all supply chain organisations due to the perishable nature of agri-food products, disruptions pose a significant concern for AFSC organisations as disruptive events cause products to edge closer to expiry, adding to unintentional food loss and cost of production. Hence, developing the capability to minimise the impact of disruptive events is crucial for AFSC organisations. Therefore, this doctoral research aims to examine the potential of AI as an enabler of AFSC resilience. Five research questions were outlined to achieve this overarching research objective, which was achieved through four studies. Study 1A conducts a systematic literature review focussing on understanding the applications, challenges, and benefits of AI in supply chain research. AI and supply chain research is largely fragmented into streams based on different types of AI technologies across several supply chain contexts and through varying disciplinary perspectives. Study 1A is the first review to synthesise this fragmented body of knowledge, giving direction to both researchers and practitioners. Study 1B is a practitioner-focused paper that combines the outputs of Study 1A, in addition to data collected from 147 AFSC respondents, to provide an insight into the view of AFSC practitioners on AI applications. Study 1B extends the findings of Study 1A, giving this research a strong understanding from both literature and industry on AI's applications, challenges, and benefits in the AFSC industry. Collectively, this provides a foundation to guide the remainder of the studies conducted in this doctoral research. In Study 2, this research provides empirical evidence on AI and SCR. Drawing on organisational information processing theory, this research provides a novel perspective to understanding how AFSCs can deploy AI-based information processing, utilising organisational mindfulness (OMIN) and organisational flexibility (OLFEX) to build resilient supply chains. Furthermore, Study 3 extends the research model proposed in Study 2 by drawing on dynamic capability theory to empirically test AI assimilation as an enabler of SCR under the moderating effect of environmental dynamism. pg. 9 Collectively, these studies make specific and distinguishing contributions to AI and supply chain research and practice. Study 1A contributes to the accumulative building of knowledge by extending theoretical discourse about the specificities of AI for prescriptive analytics to enable SCR. Study 2 is among the first empirical studies to draw on organisational information processing theory to examine AI-based information processing for developing AFSC resilience as well as the mediation effects of OFLEX and OMIN on this relationship; therefore, addressing the lack of theoretical development and understanding how AI-enabled information processing affects SCR (Belhadi et al., 2021), particularly in the context of AFSCs. Moreover, Study 3 is among the first to draw on dynamic capability theory to examine the impact of AI assimilation on SCR as well as the mediation effects of OMIN and OLFEX on this relationship. This is a considerable contribution to AI literature, as it provides a theoretical basis and empirical evidence of the importance of organisational competencies for leveraging AI technologies to improve SCR. In terms of practical implications, this research helps decision-makers gain a better understanding of AI and its applications, specifically, how AI can be leveraged to develop SCR. Study 1A proposed a strategic AI resilience framework to support supply chain decision- makers and enhance the use and value of prescriptive analytics as an enabler to developing a resilient supply chain. Studies 2 and 3 demonstrate the important role of OMIN and OFLEX for AFSC managers seeking to use AI technologies to develop SCR. This implies that the employment of AI technologies to promote SCR requires managers to adopt the principles and practices of OMIN and OFLEX. Besides illustrating the importance of developing resilience for performing successfully in the turbulent environment that AFSCs operate in, this research also demonstrates that developing resilience can enhance AFSC performance and be a source of competitive advantage, giving further reasoning to AFSC managers to develop SCR

ABSTRACT: Defined as a wireless automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) technology, the Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is emerging as an innovative inter-organizational system (IOS) that will profoundly transform the supply chain business processes and practices. However, the importance of the co-adoption of RFID and the EPC network within the supply chain has so far received insignificant attention in the literature and very few empirical studies have been conducted on the value and impacts of the co-adoption of RFID and EPC network in a supply chain context. This research represents an initial effort towards bridging the existing knowledge gap on these specific issues. Our study draws from the literature review on the RFID technology and the EPC network, the innovation management theory, the supply chain management and the inter-organizational systems to examine the following research questions : (i) What precisely does the RFID infrastructure include?; (ii) What is the link between the RFID technology and the EPC network? (iii) What role could play a university-based laboratory in the adoption process of the RFID technology and the EPC network?; (iv) What are the impacts of the RFID technology and the EPC network on intra-organizational and inter-organizational business processes and information flows, on the workforce, and on the existing business models; (v) What strategies should be implemented in order to, first, guide the development and the implementation of various adoption scenarios integrating the RFID technology and the EPC network, and, secondly, facilitate communication between the different stakeholders involved in the process of identifying the appropriate business models and technological infrastructure supporting the adoption of an optimal scenario integrating these technologies

International audiencePurpose - Despite the high operational and strategic potentials of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, very few studies have been conducted about its role as enabler of supply chain integration to achieve high-level operational efficiency. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to be an initial effort towards bridging the existing knowledge gap in the literature. Design/methodology/approach - This exploratory research was conducted in one retail supply chain. A multi-method approach combining a longitudinal real-life case study and a methodology integrating several steps, including a "living laboratory" strategy was used and involved all members of a product line to analyze their contributing activities and their interface with other supply chain members; the aim being to explore the impact of RFID technology on inter-and intra-organizational processes and information systems. Findings - The results provide support to the role of RFID as enabler of better integration of timeliness and accuracy data flows into information systems, business process optimization through automation, better system-to-system communication and better inter-and-intra-organizational business process integration. Furthermore, they also validate the unique characteristics of RFID technology such as enabler of real-time multiple tags items data collection and exchange within the supply chain and the read-and-write capability that may help, for example, to reuse some RFID tags within the supply chain and therefore reduce the cost related to the purchase of the said RFID tags. Finally, the study also reveals the importance of business process renovation and complementary investments during the adoption of RFID technology, in order to achieve high level of business value from the technology. Originality/value - The paper is original in the sense that it provides some empirical support for the enabling role of RFID technology in allowing supply chain integration

Positioning RFID Technology Into The Innovation Theory Landscape: A Multidimensional Perspective Integrating Case Study Approach

    Get PDF
The main objective of this paper is to analyze RFID technology as an innovation concept through the lens of the diffusion of innovation theory. Drawing on the extant literature on the diffusion of innovations –with an emphasis on innovation classifications and the “open innovation”–, as well as on an analysis of a longitudinal case study conducted in a Canadian beverage supply chain currently exploring the potential of RFID technology, this research study suggests that RFID technology is a multidimensional concept than encompasses the traditional classifications of innovations (e.g., technological and organizational innovation, product and process innovation, incremental and radical innovation, interactive innovation) and emerging classifications such as open innovation. Therefore, any study on the assessment of the impact of RFID-enabled supply chain optimization should be aware of the locus of interest of each supply chain stakeholder with regard to RFID technology in order to better capture the network effect associated with the technology
