Biographical Relations in Amerindian and Melanesian Societies

    No full text
Anthropology takes as its analytical lens the life cycle and with it the biographical relations and life projects that unfold within. This chapter discusses how artefacts in Melanesia and the Lowlands of Central and South America capture the concept of time and how shapes of time mirror shapes of relations. Marilyn Strathern had shown that forms for Melanesia – such as babies, yams and artefacts – are the outcomes and external shapes of relations. As part of their material life, Guna people living on the San Blas Archipelago and nearby coastal area of Panama carve wooden anthropomorphic figures that act as household guardians and auxiliary spirits of ritual specialists. Island Melanesia is a region with multiple island groups of varying landmass skirting mainland Papua New Guinea from the southwest to the northeast

Remarks: Microtus fortis consists of a species group including M. sachalinensis, M. hyperboreus and M. gromovi (Haring et al. 2011). Both morphological and genetic divergence estimates were close to levels observed among sibling species (Haring et al. 2011; Lissovsky & Obolenskaya 2011). Microtus f. pelliceus Thomas, 1911 occurs in northern Korea, while central and southern populations are generally considered a distinct Subspecies, M. f. uliginosus Jones and Johnson, 1955 (Won 1967; Won & Smith 1999).Published as part of Jo, Yeong-Seok, Baccus, John T. & Koprowski, John L., 2018, Mammals of Korea: a review of their taxonomy, distribution and conservation status, pp. 1-216 in Zootaxa 4522 (1) on pages 175-177, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4522.1.1, http://zenodo.org/record/261019

    Phonological Entity of Korean Fortis

    No full text
Korean obstruents are devided into lenis(p), fortis (glottalized or tensed:p), and aspirated(). The alternations between lenis and fortis and those between lenis and áspirated are often observed in given environments, and have been treated as one important subject in Korean phonology. The present paper deals with the fortis in two respects, descriptive and theoretical. In the descriptive point of view, some related data, which are commonly accepted by other phonologists, will be reexamined. And, in the theoretical point of view, 1 will try to show the phonological process in which the fortis is the geminate of lenis within the framework of Non-linear Phonology (McCarthy (1982), van der Hulst & Smith (1982), Dell & Vergnaud (1984), etc.)

The fortis feature in Jju Kaje and initial study

    No full text
The fortis feature in JJu (more widely known as Kaje) divides the consonants of the language (except the simultaneous labiovelar plosives kp and gb) into a set of fortis ones and a set of their lenis counterparts. Minimal pairs and other words contrasting in the presence or absence of the fortis feature were studied with the aid of spectrograms. oscillograms. and a tape repeater-segmenter aystem for isolating time portions and measuring their durations. A variety of acoustic cues to the fortis feature was observed. The time span of a consonant is partitioned here into complete occlusion. partial occlusion and final transition. The principal experimental result reported here is that the partial occlusion portion of the fortis plosives and affricates was found to be consistently longer than that of the lenis ones

Kuna Art and Shamanism: An Ethnographic Approach

    No full text
The first book to study wood carving and its relation to shamanism among Kuna people from the San Blas Archipelago, providing a rich new lens for understanding the Kuna worldview Known for their beautiful textile art, the Kuna of Panama have been scrutinized by anthropologists for decades. Perhaps surprisingly, this scrutiny has overlooked the magnificent Kuna craft of nuchukana—wooden anthropomorphic carvings—which play vital roles in curing and other Kuna rituals. Drawing on long-term fieldwork, Paolo Fortis at last brings to light this crucial cultural facet, illuminating not only Kuna aesthetics and art production but also their relation to wider social and cosmological concerns. Exploring an art form that informs birth and death, personhood, the dream world, the natural world, religion, gender roles, and ecology, Kuna Art and Shamanism provides a rich understanding of this society’s visual system, and the ways in which these groundbreaking ethnographic findings can enhance Amerindian scholarship overall. Fortis also explores the fact that to ask what it means for the Kuna people to carve the figure of a person is to pose a riddle about the culture’s complete concept of knowing. Also incorporating notions of landscape (islands, gardens, and ancient trees) as well as cycles of life, including the influence of illness, Fortis places the statues at the center of a network of social relationships that entangle people with nonhuman entities. As an activity carried out by skilled elderly men, who possess embodied knowledge of lifelong transformations, the carving process is one that mediates mortal worlds with those of immortal primordial spirits. Kuna Art and Shamanism immerses readers in this sense of unity and opposition between soul and body, internal forms and external appearances, and image and design
