Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. The influence of social and psychological determinants on physical education teachers' interpersonal style.
This correlational research investigated the social and psychological determinants of physical education teachers' interpersonal style. This thesis was based on the theoretical framework from Deci and Ryan's (1985, 1991) Cognitive Evaluation Theory (CET). This research was examining the influence of (a) the teachers' perceptions of their working climate, (b) teachers' own motivation toward physical activity, (c) teachers' own motivation toward their career, and (d) teachers' perceptions of their students' motivation towards physical activity on the physical education teachers interpersonal style (autonomy supportive versus controlling interpersonal style). 48 physical education teachers from two school boards in the Ottawa region decided to fill out a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using multiple regression in order to find relationships between the determinants of interpersonal style and physical education teachers' interpersonal style. The findings from this research revealed that one hypothesis out of four was supported. The limitations of the study are discussed and future research ideas are provided
Investigating the Effects of Physical Activity Counselling on Depressive Symptoms, Affect and Physical Activity in Female Undergraduate Students with Depression: A Multiple Baseline Single-Subject Design
Background: In Canada, women aged 15-24 report the highest rate of depression, an age group which represents a significant proportion of undergraduate students (Hanlon, 2012). Although pharmacology remains the primary treatment for depression, it may not be the most sufficient (Stanton et al., 2014). Physical activity has been demonstrated to have a large and significant antidepressant effect in individuals with depression (Schuch et al., 2016), though what remains challenging is identifying the most effective way to activate this population. Physical Activity Counselling (PAC) has been shown in research to effectively increase levels of physical activity (Fortier et al., 2011). However, the effects of PAC have not been considered in a population of female students with depression specifically.
Purpose: To investigate the effects of PAC on depressive symptoms, affect and physical activity in female undergraduate students with depression.
Methods: Five female undergraduate students with depression received two months of PAC from a registered Kinesiologist. The study followed a multiple baseline, single-subject design in which measures were taken during four study phases: baseline, intervention, end point and follow-up. Data was collected, including daily objective measures of physical activity, using accelerometers, and self-reported measures of depressive symptoms, positive affect, negative affect and physical activity, using online surveys administered every second day.
Results: Visual analyses revealed that depressive symptoms decreased and self-reported physical activity increased from baseline throughout subsequent study phases in all five participants, as hypothesized. Statistical analyses supported these results. Estimated effect sizes of grouped averages indicated that decreases in depressive symptoms from baseline throughout each study phase ranged from small to large, while increases in self-reported physical activity were in the medium to large range.
Conclusions: Findings of this study provide initial support for Physical Activity Counselling as a potential strategy to increase physical activity levels and reduce depression among female undergraduate students with depression. Future research is recommended on this important topic
Investigating the Behaviour Change Techniques and Motivational Interviewing Techniques In Physical Activity Counselling Sessions
Background: In Canada, only 15% of adults meet the physical activity guidelines (Colley et al., 2011). As regular physical activity has been demonstrated to substantially improve physical and mental health (Naci & Ioannidis, 2013; Schuch et al., 2016), a wealth of physical activity promoting interventions have been developed and evaluated (Kahn et al., 2002; Prince et al., 2014). Physical Activity Counselling (PAC) is one of these and has been shown effective in increasing physical activity motivation and behaviour (Fortier et al., 2011). However, the active ingredients of PAC have never been reported in detail, thus limiting our potential for understanding its effectiveness and to allow for its replication. Recently, taxonomies have been published for characterizing behaviour change techniques (BCTs) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques in interventions (Hardcastle et al., 2017; Michie et al., 2013). Due to its novelty, no studies to date have used the MI technique taxonomy to report interventions.
Purpose: To investigate the behaviour change techniques (BCTs) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques applied in PAC sessions delivered by student-counsellors.
Methods: PAC 1 and PAC 2 sessions delivered by 11 student-counsellors were double coded for identification of BCTs and MI techniques, for a total of 22 video recorded sessions. Two trained coders rated the presence of BCTs and MI techniques using the Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy v1 (BCTTv1) and the table of MI techniques. Inter coder agreement was assessed using Cohen’s kappa and the prevalence- and bias-adjusted kappa (PABAK) statistic.
Results: Overall, 29 BCTs (on 93) and 27 MI techniques (on 38) were reliably coded across the sampled PAC sessions (Cohen’s k =.81, PABAK=.91). Popular BCTs included 3.1 Social support (unspecified), 1.1 Goal setting (behaviour), 1.4 Action planning, whereas OARS skills (i.e., open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective and summary statements) and 24. Emphasize autonomy were the predominating MI techniques. On average, 5.7 BCTs and 9.5 MI techniques were recorded per session.
Conclusions: Findings of this study provide a first detailed report of a PAC intervention and have important implications for PAC training and replication. Future research in this area specifically looking at the quality of application of the techniques and the influence of use and quality on physical activity behaviour over time is recommended
Not Just What You Do But Why You Do It: The Influence of Self-Determination and Passion on the Relationship between Physical Activity and Well-Being in Active Women with Multiple Roles
Although there is a well-known relationship between physical activity and well-being, particularly among women, this association is complex. There is a call for more research regarding key moderating processes that will help to explain the circumstances under which physical activity can lead to optimal well-being. The overall purpose of this dissertation was to examine the influence of situational motivation (Self-Determination Theory; Deci & Ryan, 1985) and passion (Dualistic Model of Passion; Vallerand et al., 2003) as predictors of the relationship between physical activity and indicators of well-being, namely affect and vitality, in active women with multiple life roles. The influence of perceived intensity (RPE) was also investigated.
Study 1 followed a within-subject experimental design (N = 40). Article 1 revealed a significant interaction effect between RPE and introjected regulation whereby at low levels of introjection, RPE was positively associated with changes in positive affect with a running task. In Article 2, identified and introjected regulations were positively associated with pre- to post-running increases in positive affect. Moreover, participants with high introjection reported a greater increase in positive affect with a running task but also a greater decline in affect after a non-physical control task. Study 2 employed the Experience Sampling Method over a 14-day period (N = 66). Article 3 revealed a novel motivational sequence whereby introjected regulation was associated with higher RPE, intrinsic motivation (as well as RPE), was positively related to post-physical activity positive affect and the positive influence of identified regulation on affect appeared 3-hours post-activity. Lastly, Article 4 revealed that women’s daily affect was related to engaging in their passionate activity (i.e., physical activity) and that higher harmonious passion and lower obsessive passion led to more stable positive affect across days. Vitality, as measured at endpoint, was negatively predicted by obsessive passion and positively by harmonious passion.
The findings are discussed in relation to theoretical tenants and previous studies. The unique results give rise to interesting avenues of future enquiry such as exploring motivational profiles. It is recommended that wellness interventions should emphasize women’s internalization of physical activity in hopes of achieving balanced, sensible physical activity
