Sous-facteurs de L(F∞) d'indice 4cos2π/n,n≥3
Let Q be a factor of type II1, λ a number in the Jones discrete series {4cosπ/m:m≥3}, and {ei} the Jones projections associated with λ. Denote by A2n and A1n the finite-dimensional von Neumann algebras generated, respectively, by {1,e2,⋯,en} and {1,e1,⋯,en}, with the corresponding traces. The author shows that, for n sufficiently large, the index of the inclusion An=(Q⊗A2n)∗A2nA1n⊂(Q⊗A2n+1)∗A2n+1A1n+1=An+1 is equal to λ (here ∗ denotes the reduced, amalgamated free product of the algebras in question). Using the random matrix model of Voiculescu, he proves that if Q is the von Neumann algebra L(F∞) of the free group with infinitely many generators, then An is isomorphic to L(F∞).
The two facts together imply the existence, for any λ in the Jones discrete series, of an irreducible subfactor of L(F∞) of index λ. This constitutes the first example of a nonhyperfinite, non-Γ II1 factor such that its Jones invariant is fully computable (the existence of nonirreducible subfactors of L(F∞) for any index ≥4 is a simple consequence of known results)
Structures of control : the changing role of shop floor supervision in the U.S. automobile industry, 1900-1950
The thesis is based on a longitudinal study of the automobile industry
in the U.S.A. from its inception around the turn of the century, to the
1950s. Charting the changes in methods of production, organisational
structure, demography and skill configurations among the workforce, and
institutional and political formations at the workplace, the study focuses
upon the meaning of these developments in terms of the control of work and
the personnel directly involved in that control - the changing role of
foremen in 20th century industry.
Using a range of sources including contemporary governmental and
industrial surveys, company and trade union records and oral histories, a
picture is built up of the way in which methods of production, and the
control of that production, are mediated through a series of social,
demographic, spatial and ideological factors, in all of which the foreman
is a central character.
In examining the role of shop floor supervision in shaping workers
experience and actual structures of control at the workplace, and showing
how the experience of foremen, individually and as a group, in turn are
affected by changing patterns of work, the thesis constructs a historical
modification to accounts of the labour process which stress a progressive,
teleological exodus of control from the shop floor. The study points out
for example, that the role of shop-floor supervisor during the inter-war
period, largely supposed to have been proscribed and marginalised by
technological and bureaucratic developments, remained in fact the focal
point of control over hiring, firing, wage levels, production levels and
methods of work, in short almost all aspects of the industrial workers'
experience of factory life.
Having established the boundaries of power and control surrounding the
foreman in pre-war mass production, and discussed the meaning of these
boundaries in terms of class, ideology and divisions among the workforce,
the thesis then examines the origins and effects of unionisation on the
role of supervision. Following an account of the restructuring of power and
control which comes with the establishment of production workers unions in
the industry, the advent of the unionisation of foremen themselves is
examined. The Foremen's Association of America (FAA), which saw its genesis
and principal area of recruitment in the automobile industry, represented
the most serious attempt to organise supervisory workers in the USA this
century, and marks a pivotal point in the spread of unionisation,
managerial response and state intervention in industrial relations.
Building on earlier sections outlining the position of foremen in terms of
power and ideology, the thesis proposes a complex, multi-level dynamic
behind the formation, growth and decline of the FAA as a corrective to
previous accounts which stress the primacy of legislative and institutional
explanatory frameworks.
Finally the thesis charts the post-war response of management in the
industry to the threat of foremen's unionisation, locating ensuing attempts
to restructure the role, status and prestige of foremen in terms of the
historical impact and progress of competing managerial theory, in
particular that of the human relations school
The volume collects the expanded and revised versions of the presentations discussed during the conference titled "Politics and Administration. Ethics, Managerialism, and Accountability," organized in honour of Gianfranco D’Alessio. The focus is on administrative leadership, discussed and analysed from two perspectives. Firstly, in relation to the constitutional principles of impartiality and good administration. Secondly, with reference to the relationship it establishes with political bodies. The topic is approached from various angles and multiple perspectives, reflecting the diversity of skills and experiences, both professional and academic, of each author

Logarithmic variance profiles and the corresponding f-1 spectra of temperature fluctuations in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection
We report experimental results for the temperature variance 2(z) and the corresponding frequency spectra P(f) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratioT= D/L = 1:00 (D = 1:12 m is the diameter and L = 1:12 m the height). The measurements were conducted in the Rayleigh-number range 1011 < Ra < 1:35 1014 and Pr ' 0:8. For Ra = 1:35x1014, 2(z) could be described well by a logarithmic dependence on the vertical position z in a range of z 1 < z < z 2 with z 1 ' 70 and z 2 = 0:1L. Here L=(2Nu) is the thickness of a thin thermal sublayer adjacent to the horizontal plate where the heat flux (denoted by the Nusselt number Nu) is carried mostly by thermal diffusion. In the log layer, we found that the temperature spectra had a significant frequency range over which P(f) f with close to 1. As Ra decreased, increased so that the log layer became thinner. At Ra = 2:05 1011, z 2 < z 1 and therefore there was no range for a log layer. Correspondingly, the temperature spectrum near the horizontal plate did not have the f1 scaling form either
l-modular blocks of Rep_k(SL_n(F))
Let F be a non-archimedean local field with residual characteristic p, and k an algebraically closed field with characteristic l, where l different from p. Let Rep_k(SL_n(F)) be the category of smooth k-representations of SL_n(F). In this work, we establish the block decomposition of Rep_k(SL_n(F)) under the condition that p does not divide the order of the Weyl group of SL_n(F).Affiliation changed. Effect of tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanotubes on structural, morphological and mechanical properties of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) films
Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) is a semicrystalline, biocompatible and biodegradable polymer widely employed in many applications (food packaging, biomedical devices, drug delivery systems). This work deals with nanocomposites of PLLA and tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanotubes (NTs) as a novel material to obtain thinner and stronger bioresorbable vascular scaffolds. We studied the influence of WS2 NTs on the mechanical properties of PLLA-WS2 films. Polarized optical microscopy reveals a high degree of orientation of the polymer molecules in stretched films that further increases with a post-stretching annealing treatment. At the same time, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy confirm enhancement of the crystallinity induced by the WS2 NTs. © 2018 Author(s)

Let
be a cuspidal, cohomological automorphic representation of an inner form
G
of
over a number field
F
of arbitrary signature. Further, let
be a prime of
F
such that
G

of

is the Steinberg representation. Assuming that the representation is noncritical at

-invariants for the representation
. If the number field
F
is totally real, we show that these automorphic
-invariants agree with the Fontaine–Mazur
-invariant of the associated
p
-adic Galois representation. This generalizes a recent result of Spieß respectively Rosso and the first named author from the case of parallel weight
to arbitrary cohomological weights.

Seabed attributes and meiofaunal abundance associated with a hydrodynamic gradient in Baynes Sound, British Columbia, Canada
Sutherland, T.F.; Garcia-Hoyos, L.M.; Poon, P.; Krassovski, M.V.; Foreman, M.G.G.; Martin, A.J., and Amos, C.L., 2018. Seabed attributes and meiofaunal abundance associated with a hydrodynamic gradient in Baynes Sound, British Columbia, Canada. The distribution of seabed geotechnical, biochemical, and meiofauna attributes was examined in Baynes Sound, British Columbia, between 2009 and 2014. Among attributes measured were sediment porosity, organic carbon and nitrogen, and trace element concentrations (e.g., zinc, copper), which increased with increasing sediment fines content toward the head of the Sound. A ternary plot (sand-silt-clay percentages) revealed a constant clay/silt ratio across a range of sand proportions with textures ranging from well-sorted sand at the high-energy SE entrance to silt-dominated mud in the depositional basin. These sediment textures were related to modeled maximum velocity values within 5 m of the seabed (Umax,5), with highest values (restricted entrance) and lowest values (deep basin) representing sand depositional and mud depositional facies. Sediment porewater sulfide fell into an oxic category (0-700 μM), exhibiting a lack of variation and organic enrichment within the Sound. The first principal component analysis (PCA) factor described the alignment between fine sediments, organics, Cu and Zn, and meiofauna attributes and accounted for 49% of the total variance. The second PCA factor (19% of total variance) described the relationship between Umax,5 and sediment grain size fractions >0.5 mm and an indirect association with water depth and fine sand (0.105-0.250 mm). Meiofauna were associated with a medium sand fraction (0.25 mm) characterized by low-porosity and low-organic sand loam textures. Although the range in abundance was relatively greater for nematodes, harpacticoid copepods revealed a stronger response to changes in sediment geotechnical and organic attributes, suggesting these taxa may be used to describe seabed variations or potential perturbations.</p
