Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Prediction of mass transfer performances in trickle-bed reactors equipped with innovative catalyst shapes
Trickle-bed reactors (TBR) are considered the best gas-liquid-solid contactors technology in a wide application spectrum, they are usually encountered in the petroleum industry to perform hydrotreatment operations. Within these reactors, gas and liquid flow co-currently downward throughout a fixed bed of catalyst particles. The performance of trickle-bed reactors is very much dependent on the coupling between hydrodynamics, transports (mass, heat and momentum) and heterogeneous catalytic reaction. Despite the vast collection of contributions in the literature, the coupled mechanisms involved within these reactors are intricate, therefore complicating prediction and understanding at the local scale. More particularly, attention is yet to be attributed to particle shape effect on hydrodynamics and mass transfer. In this context, the objectives of this work is to improve understanding of hydrodynamics and mass transfer, to study particle shape effect on TBRs performance, and to assess the applicability of film and resistances-in-series models to describe gas-liquid-solid mass transfer. To do so, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model has been developed and validated in several configurations. In addition, an experimental investigation of gas-liquid-solid mass transfer in reactive conditions was conducted within a milli-reactor. The numerical model is based on the Volume-Of-Fluid approach, suitable to track and describe accurately gas-liquid and liquid-solid interfaces. In addition, Gas-liquid-solid mass transfer is coupled to a very fast heterogeneous catalytic reaction. The numerical model was first applied on a bi-dimensional falling liquid film over a semi-infinite plane. The predictions were found in an excellent agreement with appropriate analytical solutions. Afterwards, further CFD validation was conducted on a Falling Film Micro-structured Reactor (FFMR) used by (Trouvieille et al [2013]) to conduct mass transfer experiments. A great agreement was reached for both hydrodynamics and overall mass transfer in presence of α-methylstyrene hydrogenation to cumene. Following an increasing complexity strategy, the numerical model was applied to three other study cases: (i) spherical particles string reactor, (ii) 3D-printed milli-reactor and (iii) three trickle-bed loadings of spheres, trilobes and quadrilobes. The latter study cases provided insight on external mass transfer and consolidation of existing correlations. In addition, further numerical validation was conducted against collected experimental data in the 3D-printed milli-reactor. In the last three cases, acceleration of external gas-liquid-solid mass transfer was observed and quantified for tortuous flow paths. This behaviour is mainly due to convective supply of limiting reagent. Besides, investigation of mass transfer in trickle-bed loadings unveiled an enhancement of mass transfer coefficient for high surface-to-volume ratio particles, such as trilobes and quadrilobes. Concerning resistances-in-series model, it was found unsuitable to describe overall mass transfer due to low liquid film thicknesses and their distributions. Therefore, corrections and correlations based on the film model have been proposed to account for liquid film thickness distributions. Finally, effects of gas superficial velocity and particle shape on wetting efficiency were investigated in industrial flow conditions. Subsequently, an extension is proposed for the wetting efficiency correlation of Julcour-Lebigue et al. [2009], which was developed in trickle-bed reactors
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Design and evaluation of a hydrothermal liquefaction process for the energy recovery of agro-food residues
Face to climatic emergency, new carbon-neutral and renewable ways to produce energy have to be developed. Biomass appears as a promising alternative to produce an energetic carrier to meet the challenges of a sustainable development. Food industrial waste is a stable source of biomass in time. However, it is often valorised through low-cost applications due to their high-water content. This work investigates the production of a biofuel from this waste through the hydrothermal liquefaction process. This technology allows the conversion of biomass under temperature [250 °C – 350 °C] in a liquid medium, kept under pressure. Despite the fact hydrothermal liquefaction is known for a while, the lack of commercial outlet, due to petroleum fuels competitiveness, technological and scientific issues have slowed down its development. Few continuous plants exist and most of studies have been conducted in batch reactors. This work aims to assess the potential of the scaling up of hydrothermal liquefaction for energetic valorisation of food industrial residues. Experiments have been carried out on blackcurrant pomace (BCP) and brewers’ spent grains (BSG). First, batch experiments have shown the respective potential of these residues for biofuel production. Biocrude obtained is a mix of a heavy solid fraction called biochar and a lighter phase, the biooil. Their respective yields depends on processing conditions. About 33 % and 24 % of boioil can be expected for respectively BCP (300 °C) and BSG (315 °C), with 15 minutes reaction time. Biocrudes present a higher heating value close to 33 MJ/kg, but also high concentrations of heteroatoms and biochar. Upgrading steps are then necessary before valorisation in liquid biofuel. Based on these observations, a predictive model has been developed as a sum of parallel and serial reactions, with different kinetics. Almost 70 % of the experimental results have been predicted in a 10 % confidence interval from the composition of biomasses, temperature and reaction time. Confrontation with literature and statistical analysis reveal that some additional work is needed to improve and clarify some reactional pathways. Inspired from works on hydrothermal carbonisation, methods have been developed to estimate the enthalpy of reaction. Results show that hydrothermal liquefaction of food industrial residues is overall exothermal. Enthalpies have been estimated between -3,0 et -1,2 MJ/kg for BCP and between -1,97 et -0,9 MJ/kg for BSG. Although technical changes are still necessary, pilot has been adapted to ensure long time runs. These experiments have validated the calculation of the enthalpy of reaction obtained from the batch reactor. However, results from continuous experiments indicate that less biochar is formed for more gaseous and aqueous products. All the energy and mass balances established from experimental work have been integrated in simulation flowsheet in PROSIMPLUS®. A technico-economic evaluation based on this simulation returns a minimum selling price for biocrude. With economic assumptions, minimum prices calculated are 2,28 et 2,97 €/L for biocrude from BCP and BSG. Prices are still high in comparison with crude. The impact of variations of the installation capacity, initial capital cost, biocrude yields and gate fee has been estimated on final biocrude price. By considering higher capacities, it seems possible to reduce significantly biocrude selling price
Transient kinetics for methane production pathways identification over Fischer-Tropsch catalysts
Syngas can be produce from different resources such as natural gas, coal and biomass. In the light of energy resource diversification, FTS can make a contribution to the production of liquid fuels. However, methane formation as byproduct has a large impact on the process economic feasibility. This study aims at the understanding of the methane formation over syngas conversion catalysts, such as nickel and cobalt. To this purpose, Steady-State Isotopic Transient Kinetic Analysis (SSITKA) and step-transient experiments over different nickel and cobalt samples have been carried out and the data have been used to develop a microkinetic model describing methane formation. By using these methodologies, it was found that the CO conversion to methane proceeds through two different surface intermediate species. The microkinetic model is developed on the hypothesis of two reacting paths leading to methane: the unassisted CO dissociation and the H-assisted CO decomposition. It is proposed that these two reacting intermediates are related to the structure of the catalyst particle, specifically to the distribution of the catalyst surface sites on terraces and step
