Factorial characters of the classical Lie groups

    No full text
Just as the definition of factorial Schur functions as a ratio of determinants allows one to show that they satisfy a Jacobi–Trudi-type identity and have an explicit combinatorial realisation in terms of semistandard tableaux, so we offer here definitions of factorial irreducible characters of the classical Lie groups as ratios of determinants that share these two features. These factorial characters are each specified by a partition, λ=(λ1,λ2,…,λn), and in each case a flagged Jacobi–Trudi identity is derived that expresses the factorial character as a determinant of corresponding factorial characters specified by one-part partitions, (m), for which we supply generating functions. These identities are established by manipulating determinants through the use of certain recurrence relations derived from these generating functions. The transitions to combinatorial realisations of the factorial characters in terms of tableaux are then established by means of non-intersecting lattice path models. The results apply to gl(n), so(2n+1), sp(2n) and o(2n), and are extended to the case of so(2n) by making use of newly defined factorial difference characters.</p

Factorial Q-functions and Tokuyama identities for classical Lie groups

    No full text
Factorial characters of each of the classical Lie groups have recently been defined algebraically as rather simple deformations of irreducible characters. Each such factorial character has been shown to satisfy a flagged Jacobi–Trudi identity, thereby allowing for its combinatorial realisation in terms of first a non-intersecting lattice path model and then a tableau model. Here we propose algebraic definitions of factorial Q-functions of the classical Lie groups and translate these definitions into combinatorial realisations in terms of non-intersecting lattice path and primed shifted tableaux models. By way of some justification of our chosen definitions, it is then shown that our factorial Q-functions satisfy Tokuyama-type identities and relate some special case of these to other identities that have appeared in the literature.</p

Women in the Boardroom and Corporate Decisions of Italian listed companies: Does the “critical mass” matter?

    No full text
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between women in the board of directors, firm performance and corporate decisions as well as the risk of the firm, debt level, and research and development (R&D). Design/methodology/approach This study investigates a sample of 41 Italian listed companies. In particular, using a panel data of 369 firm-year observations, during the period 2005-2013, through a generalized method of moment, the relationship between women in the board of directors and corporate decisions has been investigated. Findings The results suggest that female representation in the board of directors affects corporate decisions. Women in the boardroom affect both financing and investment decisions. In particular, the presence of women seems to take on a complementary role to debt; it has a negative effect on risk and appears to have a positive impact on investment in R&D The results also suggest a strong relationship between female directors and firm value, especially when certain multicultural factors are considered. Finally, considering the concept of “critical mass,” in line with the arguments of Kanter (1977), the results seem to emphasize a greater influence of women with respect to corporate decisions, moving from “tokenism” to a “critical mass” scenario. Practical implications The outcomes of the application, besides improving the current knowledge on the relationship between female representation in the board of directors, innovation, financial, and accounting decisions, intend to reveal if the governance of Italian listed companies is efficient in determining company results and in pursuing optimal decisions. Moreover, the results could be useful for both policy makers for the regulation of corporate governance and the board of directors and as a suggestion to companies that regularly appoint the members of the board of directors. Originality/value The work is not limited to examining the relationship between female representation and the performance of firms but instead uses a series of indicators of corporate decisions and multicultural, such as, the nationality of women in board of directors, the educational level, the past experience, and their interaction with the variables concerning the decision-making process. To the best knowledge of authors, this is the first study that investigates the relationship between women and corporate decisions in a single civil law countr

Use of Foley catheter in control of internal carotid hemorrhage during endoscopic endonasal surgery

    No full text
Internal carotid artery (ICA) injuries during endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES) are rare life-threatening events. We describe a technique to manage ICA injuries based on the use of Foley catheters.A 26-year-old female underwent endoscopic transnasal trans-sphenoidal removal of pituitary adenoma. Cerebrospinal fluid leak occurred 4 days postoperatively. During repair procedure, accidental injury of ICA occurred. Emergency nasal packing through positioning of four Foley urologic catheters was successfully performed to stop bleeding. The patient did not report neurologic deficits. In author's opinion, Foley catheters are suitable to obtain immediate bleeding control since they are rapidly available and easily usable

Professionalism, golf coaching and a master of science degree

A distinction can be made between 'professionalisation', which is concerned with occupational status and standing, and 'professionalism,' which refers to matters of quality and standards of practice (especially specialized knowledge, ethics and altruism). The purpose of this stimulus article is to present key features of contemporary medical professionalism as a basis for critically reflecting on discourse associated with Tiger Woods' current coach, Sean Foley. It is suggested that that provision of a Master of Science degree in golf teaching/coaching would facilitate the development of 'professionalism' in golf coaches

Foley catheter versus vaginal misoprostol: randomized controlled trial (PROBAAT-M Study) and systematic review and meta-analysis of literature

OBJECTIVES: To assess effectiveness and safety of Foley catheter versus vaginal misoprostol for term induction of labor. STUDY DESIGN: This trial randomly allocated women with singleton term pregnancy to 30-mL Foley catheter or 25-μg vaginal misoprostol tablets. Primary outcome was cesarean delivery rate. Secondary outcomes were maternal and neonatal morbidity and time to birth. Additionally, a systematic review was conducted. RESULTS: Fifty-six women were allocated to Foley catheter, 64 to vaginal misoprostol tablets. Cesarean delivery rates did not differ significantly (25% Foley versus 17% misoprostol; relative risk [RR] 1.46, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.72 to 2.94), with more cesarean deliveries due to failure to progress in the Foley group (14% versus 3%; RR 4.57, 95% CI 1.01 to 20.64). Maternal and neonatal outcomes were comparable. Time from induction to birth was longer in the Foley catheter group (36 hours versus 25 hours; p < 0.001). Meta-analysis showed no difference in cesarean delivery rate and reduced vaginal instrumental deliveries and hyperstimulation in the Foley catheter group. Other outcomes were not different. CONCLUSION: Our trial and meta-analysis showed no difference in cesarean delivery rates and less hyperstimulation with fetal heart rate changes and vaginal instrumental deliveries when using Foley catheter, thereby supporting potential advantages of the Foley catheter over misoprostol as ripening agent.Marta Jozwiak, Mieke ten Eikelder, Katrien Oude Rengerink, Christianne de Groot, Hanneke Feitsma, Marc Spaanderman, Mariëlle van Pampus, Jan Willem de Leeuw, Ben Willem Mol, Kitty Bloemenkamp, on behalf of the PROBAAT Study Grou

Algoritmo generador de foley mono a partir de texto

    No full text
In the present work of degree, it is intended to expose the process carried out to develop a mono Foley generator algorithm from text, with the use of algorithms belonging to deep learning. The WCGAN-GP algorithm is then used, initially establishing a training data set, in which Foley audios recorded at the University of San Buenaventura of Bogotá are found. After obtaining the data set, the algorithm is developed and trained in order to generate Foley mono audios of two categories, each with three variations and submit them to a listening test process, from which a subjective test is obtained from students of Sound Engineering at the university. It can be finally determined that the performance of the algorithm during the training stage was as expected and additionally, that as the sample rate of the data used for the training stage increases, the generated audios obtained a better subjective score due to their similarity with the reference categories.PregradoIngeniero de Sonid

Edgeworth and Lindahl-Foley equilibria of a general equilibrium model with private provision of pure public goods

    No full text
In this paper, we propose a definition of Edgeworth equilibrium for a private ownership production economy with (possibly infinitely) many private goods and a finite number of pure public goods. We show that Edgeworth equilibria exist whatever be the dimension of the private goods space, and can be decentralized, in the finite and infinite dimensional cases, as Lindahl-Foley equilibria. Existence theorems for Lindahl-Foley equilibria are a by-product of our results.production economy; public goods; Edgworth equilibrium; Lindahl-Foley equilibrium; proper economy
