Fodor, Bruner and beyond
This article presents an in-depth conversation with Peter Hagoort, a leading cognitive neuroscientist and director of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. The interview explores the contrasting paradigms of Jerry Fodor and Jerome Bruner, focusing on their differing conceptions of the mind, including modularity, perception, and the role of cognitive processes. Hagoort reflects on Fodor’s modularity theory and Bruner’s New Look in Perception, examining their influence on his own research, particularly the language marker hypothesis, which highlights the symbolic and flexible nature of human internal models shaped by language. The discussion further addresses Fodor’s critique of relativism, his scepticism about cognitive neuroscience, and the relevance of these foundational ideas to contemporary questions in cognitive science and artificial intelligence, including the distinctions between human cognition and large language models. Through this dialogue, the article revisits key debates in cognitive science while situating them within current research and theoretical developments
ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATIONS OF PERSONAL NAMES IN SLOVENE, GERMAN AND ENGLISH SYNCHRONISATION OF HUNGARIAN ANIMATED MOVIE VUK
Namen magistrske naloge je predstaviti in analizirati prevodne različice imen animiranih junakov v slovenski, nemški in angleški sinhronizaciji madžarskega animiranega filma Vuk režiserja Dargay Attile.
Za prevajanje osebnih lastnih imen obstaja veliko različnih strategij in pristopov. V magistrskem delu smo analizo osebnih lastnih imen opravili na podlagi prevajalskega modela avtorja Lincolna Fernandesa. Ugotavljali smo, katere strategije so prevajalci uporabljali pri prevajanju osebnih lastnih imen v slovenski, nemški in angleški različici madžarskega animiranega filma Vuk. Prevode osebnih lastnih imen smo med sabo primerjali, pri čemer smo iskali podobnosti in odstopanja. Če se nam določena prevodna rešitev ni zdela primerna, smo podali še predloge za izboljšave.
Prevodne različice osebnih lastnih imen, ki smo jih v empiričnem delu magistrske naloge analizirali, smo na podlagi slušnega vtisa izpisali iz že obstoječe uradne nemške in angleške sinhronizacije madžarskega animiranega filma Vuk. Animirani film Vuk še ni bil preveden v slovenščino, zato smo ga v celoti prevedli, in sicer iz izvirnega, tj. madžarskega jezika. Pri tem smo upoštevali tehnike ter pogoje, ki jih narekuje prevajanje za sinhronizacijo.Translation of personal names often represents one of the greatest challenges for synchronisation of animated movies. It requires from the translator not only to have competence in the field of knowledge of language elements and cultural characteristics of the source and target language, but also to be familiar with the personality of individual character and film background in detail, especially when it comes to a movie, which was created on the basis of a book. At the same time, translation for synchronisation requires from the translator a good sense of rhythm and a sense of simple but creative diction, and mostly the ability to fully identify with the world of children. The purpose of the master\u27s thesis is to present and analyze translation versions of the names of animated heroes in Slovene, German and English synchronisation of Hungarian animated movie Vuk of the director Attila Dargay.
There are many different strategies and approaches to translation of personal names. In this master\u27s thesis, we have analysed personal names on the basis of translation model developed by Lincoln Fernandes. We determined which strategies are used by translators in translating personal names in Slovene, German and English version of Hungarian animated movie Vuk. Translations of personal names were compared to each other, while we were looking for similarities and deviations. In case a certain translation solution did not seem appropriate, we made further suggestions for improvements.
Translation versions of personal names, which were analysed in the empirical part of the master\u27s thesis, were written out on the basis of auditory impression from the existing official German and English synchronisation of the Hungarian animated movie Vuk. Animated movie Vuk has not yet been translated into Slovene, so we have fully translated it from the original, i.e. Hungarian language. In doing so, we took into account the techniques and terms dictated by the translation for synchronisation

ASPECTS OF THE COSMOLOGICAL ELECTROWEAK PHASE-TRANSITION
Bödeker D, BUCHMULLER W, FODOR Z, HELBIG T. ASPECTS OF THE COSMOLOGICAL ELECTROWEAK PHASE-TRANSITION. Nuclear Physics B. 1994;423(1):171-196.We study the decay of the metastable symmetric phase in the standard model at finite temperature. For the SU(2)-Higgs model the two wave function correction terms Z(phi)phi2, T) and Z(chi)(phi2, T) of Higgs and Goldstone boson fields are calculated to one-loop order. We find that the derivative expansion of the effective action is reliable for Higgs masses smaller than the W-boson mass. We propose a new procedure to evaluate the decay rate by first integrating out the vector field and the components of the scalar fields with non-zero Matsubara frequencies. The static part of the scalar field is treated in the saddle point approximation. As a by-product we obtain a formula for the decay rate of a homogeneous unstable state. The course of the cosmological electroweak phase transition is evaluated numerically for different Higgs boson masses and non-vanishing magnetic mass of the gauge boson. For Higgs masses above approximately 60 GeV the latent heat can reheat the system to the critical temperature, which qualitatively changes the nature of the transition

The Benefits of Being Economics Professor A (and not Z)
Alphabetic name ordering on multi-authored academic papers, which is the convention in the economics discipline and various other disciplines, is to the advantage of people whose last name initials are placed early in the alphabet. As it turns out, Professor A, who has been a first author more often than Professor Z, will have published more articles and experienced afaster growth rate over the course of her career as a result of reputation and visibility. Moreover, authors know that name ordering matters and indeed take ordering seriously: Several characteristics of an author group composition determine the decision to deviate from the default alphabetic name order to a significant extent.performance measurement, incentives, economists, name ordering
Final word on Jersey Dutch
In this article, William Z. Shetter compares and contrasts the dialects that developed between different Dutch colonies in the New World. He explores in-depth the nuances of Jersey Dutch, and provides theories to explain how Dutch and colonial languages blended. The article is reprinted from American Speech, December 1958, Volum XXXIII, No. 4
