René Géronimo Favaloro : pioneer of Cardiac Surgery
Dr. René G. Favaloro moved to the Cleveland Clinic in 1962 and proceeded to reshape the face of cardiac surgery as we knew it. Together with his colleagues at the Cleveland Clinic, Drs. Effler, Sones, Proudfit, Groves, Sheldon and countless others, he contributed to the double internal mammary arterymyocardial implantation by the Vineberg method, and by May 1967, he reconstructed the right coronary artery by the saphenous vein graft interposition. These landmark procedures paved the way for the aorto-coronary saphenous vein bypass graft in October 1967. Many similar breakthroughs ensued, with the application of the bypass technique to the left coronary artery, the combination of coronary artery bypass graft with left ventricular reconstruction and valve repair/replacement and finally, by December, a double bypass to the right coronary artery and anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery. In June, 1971, Dr. Favaloro decided to leave the Cleveland Clinic and return to Argentina where he created a medical centre, a teaching unit, a research department and finally an Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery. This was his greatest personal ambition. Over and above his brilliant mind and craft, Dr. Favaloro was a man of integrity, courage, honesty and humility, whose name will never cease to reverberate throughout the history of medicine.peer-reviewe

René Girard's 'Mimetic Theory' and His Contribution to Understanding Migration
In this article the author explores the extent of René Girard's “mimetic theory” to understand migration phenomenon. To this end, a brief description of the “mimetic theory” and a characterization of the migration are presented. Subsequently, it raises the need to explore new perspectives on migration beyond the positivist approach in the human sciences which leaves the contribution of a philosophical understanding out. In this sense, girardian philosophy is pertinent to understand several types of migration: irregular immigration, forced displacement and refuge. Finally, the author proposes a praxis to avoid, or at least minimizes, the persecutory mimetic process related to migration
WebWriter: A System to Author and Remix Explorables – Requirements & First Prototype
Active and personalized learning requires that teachers can remix a wide variety of sources into new learning resources, which in turn may be customized by students. While this is well-supported for paper-oriented resources, multimodal, interactive learning resources for digital use, called explorables, are much more difficult to author and remix. In this paper, we derive a set of requirements for a system to author such explorables from a workshop-based study. We further present a first prototype of such a system, called “WebWriter”
Podstawy antropologii René Girarda
THE BASIS OF RENÉ GIRARD’S ANTHROPOLOGYThe article presents the fundamental category of René Girard’s anthropology, namely the concept of desire. The author discusses, above all, its imitative nature which is revealed in its two basic types: the external and the internal one. The characteristic is supplemented with the metaphysical dimension which appears at times when the object of the desire is existence itself. The presentations were also widened to include the views of psychologists, for whom Girard’s findings constitute an important inspiration

Musikstädte as real and imaginary soundscapes: urban musical images as literary motifs in twentieth-century German modernism
PhDThis study examines German literary images of musical life as part of the wider sound identity of the modern German city at the turn of the twentieth century. Focussing on a forty-year period from 1890 to 1930, synonymous with the emergence of the modern German metropolis as an aesthetic object, the project assesses, compares and contrasts how musical life in the Musikstädte was perceived and portrayed by writers in an increasingly noisy urban environment. How does urban musical life influence and condition city writings? What are the differences and similarities between the writings on various musical cities? Can an urban textual sound identity be derived from these differences and similarities? The approach employed to answer these questions is a new, cross-disciplinary one to urban sound in literature, moving beyond reading the key sounds of the urban soundscape using urban musicology, sensorial anthropology and cultural poetics towards a literary contextualisation of the urban aural experience.
The literary motifs of the symphony, the gramophone and urban noise are put under the spotlight through the analysis of a wide range of modernist works by authors who have a special relationship with music. At the centre of this analysis are the Kaffeehausliteratur authors Hermann Bahr, Alfred Polgar and Peter Altenberg, the then Munich-based author Thomas Mann and the lesser known René Schickele. The analysis of these particular works is framed in the music-geographical context of the Musikstadt and literary underpinnings of this topos, ranging from Ingeborg Bachmann to Hans Mayer and, once again, Thomas Mann. In analysing these texts, the methodological approach devised by Strohm, who identifies the blending of a range of urban sounds as a definition of urban space and identity, is applied. His ideas combine historical literary
analysis, musical history and urban sociology. They are rarely used in the analysis of the auditory environment.Arts and Humanities Research Council

La pensée du roman dans René Leys
International audienceThe paper examineswhat is said about the novel in René Leys. The character 'Segalen', unable to write the 'book' he undertook, more or less unconsciously follows the advices and suggestions of René Leys who teaches him how to write a 'novel'; however, the master of novels (René Leys) and the disciple ('Segalen') are led to break up. Despite its deceptive nature, this learning relationship reveals several theoretical positions about fiction: a process of identification of the reader (represented by the character 'Segalen') with the characters of the novel, the necessity for the reader and the author to collaborate in order to build the novel together, and various positions adopted by the character "Segalen" illustrating the greater or lesser adhesion to fiction, from feigned credulity to radical denial.L’article examine le discours sur le roman inhérent à René Leys.
Image of the author in the romantic literary text (based on René-François de Chateaubriand’s "René or the Consequences of Passion")
The article analyzes the influence of autobiographical elements on the author’s image in a literary text of the Romantic period on the example of the short novel "René or the Consequences of Passions", written by Francois-Rene de Chateaubriand. The author shows how personal experience, for instance, strong religious convictions and contemporary political lines become the symbolic background of the text, creating a picture of a specific romantic character. R. Chateaubriand’s work is considered as the illustration of the pre-Romanticism in literature, so the article examines the Romantic basis of the treatise "The Genius of Christianity". R. Chateaubriand’s idea of the unity of literature and religion takes a prominent place in many of his works, as well as in the short novel “Rene”. The author highlights the issue of the perception of beauty, both personal and universal, as well as the interconnection of melancholy and love in the context of the Christian paradigm. The article also illuminates the hidden integration of the so-called "illness of the times" or the romanticizing of mental disorders in literature. The short novel "René or the Consequences of Passions" is imbued with motives of depression or “melancholy”, therefore the article presents an analysis of the aestheticization of the reinterpretation of death. This text partially conveys the merging of the personality of the writer and the eponymous hero René, who feels not only deep loneliness, but also sense of despair and constantly returns to reflections about civilizational and philosophical questions. Thanks to the shortening of the distance between the reader and the writer, the portrait of the “split man” can be reinterpreted repeatedly. The text of the short novel "René" shows the continuity of rethinking both personal experience and the conceptualization of melancholy.
