Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Promovendo uma análise das memórias dos veteranos brasileiros e da atuação pública das associações de ex-combatentes discutiremos como se deu o processo de construção de uma memória coletiva sobre a participação da FEB no front italiano durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial (1939-1945), bem como as características da construção desse discurso difundido pelas instituições e reafirmada pelos monumentos e comemorações, afim de perceber como essa construção social está associada a formação da identidade e a difusão de um ou mais relatos acerca da participação do Brasil na Segunda Guerra Mundial

Get PDFBetween 1944 and 1945, Brazil took part in the Allied war effort by sending the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) to Italy. Comprising just over 25,000 men, the FEB was deployed to fight Axis troops during World War II. Although politically contradictory within the domestic context, Brazil’s participation was significant from a political-military standpoint, marking a turning point in the modernization of the country’s Armed Forces. Considered a microcosm of Brazilian society, the FEB was largely composed of individuals from working-class backgrounds—a consequence of recruitment challenges and the high rate of evasion among members of the upper classes. This article aims to examine the process of professional reintegration of a segment of FEB veterans in the city of Juiz de Fora (MG), who, upon returning from the war, faced the challenge of reconciling their combat experiences with civilian life in a society unprepared to receive them and in the absence of effective public policies.Entre 1944 e 1945, o Brasil participou militarmente do esforço de guerra aliado, enviando à Itália a Força Expedicionária Brasileira (FEB), composta por pouco mais de 25 mil homens, para combater as tropas do Eixo durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Embora contraditória no plano político interno, a participação brasileira foi relevante do ponto de vista político-militar, representando um marco na modernização das Forças Armadas nacionais. Considerada uma amostra da sociedade brasileira, a FEB foi majoritariamente composta por indivíduos oriundos das classes trabalhadoras, resultado das dificuldades de recrutamento e da elevada evasão entre membros das camadas mais abastadas. Memória e história oral: as interações entre a história escrita e a história vivida
No full textThis article aims to weave a brief, but effective, dialogue between the theme of memory and its relationship with the methodology of oral history. Thus, memory is understood here as a representation of the past and one of the main substrates of identity, which guarantees it a unique status, being, therefore, an object of disputes, constructions and reconstructions. In the first part, the text puts the concept of memory in a historical perspective, reflecting on the limits and possibilities between the narrative of an individual and the representation of a collective experience. In the second part, I will try to answer what is the working material of oral history, as well as what a source obtained through the application of this methodology can document, punctuating its uses and attributions.O presente artigo tem como objetivo tecer um breve, porém efetivo, diálogo entre a temática da memória e a sua relação com a metodologia da história oral. Dessa forma, a memória é entendida aqui como uma representação do passado e um dos principais substratos da identidade, o que lhe garante um estatuto singular, sendo, portanto, objeto de disputas, construções e reconstruções. Na primeira parte, o texto coloca o conceito de memória em uma perspectiva histórica, refletindo sobre os limites e as possibilidades entre a narrativa de um indivíduo e a representação de uma experiência coletiva. Na segunda parte, buscarei responder qual é o material de trabalho da história oral, bem como o que uma fonte obtida através da aplicação desta metodologia pode documentar, pontuando seus usos e atribuições
The game of light and shadows: the uses and abuses of a memory of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (1945 - 2017)
Get PDFEntendendo que a memória é fundamental para a tomada de conhecimento do passado e que, seus usos e manipulações produzem discursos e estes, por sua vez, estão relacionados ao contexto de formação da identidade. Este trabalho, tem como objetivo investigar as formas de utilização coletivas nas quais as memórias dos Ex-Combatentes da Força Expedicionária Brasileira, são empregadas. Promover uma análise historiográfica da memória contemporânea, amplamente difundida pelas associações, reafirmada pelos monumentos e praticada nas comemorações é uma das maneiras de perceber os meandros da construção coletiva da memória e a que práticas, esses discursos estão vinculados. Nesse sentido, as fontes essenciais para a construção deste trabalho além das fontes orais, obtidas através da participação de veteranos da Força Expedicionária Brasileira e seus descendentes, são os documentos produzidos no interior das associações atas, panfletos, materiais de divulgação e documentos que, de alguma forma, veiculassem os discursos produzidos pelas instituições. Os estudos já realizados acerca da memória coletiva, identidade e reintegração social dos veteranos da FEB foram fundamentais para este trabalho e também, para uma análise crítica dos processos inerentes à construção, usos e abusos relacionados as memórias que envolvem a participação do Brasil na Segunda Guerra Mundial. Este trabalho, vem ao encontro das propostas pensadas no Mestrado Profissional em Patrimônio Cultural, Paisagens e Cidadania uma vez que, promove uma análise não só sobre os monumentos, mas sobretudo das memórias que esses artefatos suportam. Veteranos de GuerraUnderstanding that memory is fundamental to the knowledge of the past and that its uses and manipulations produce discourses and these, in turn, are related to the context of identity formation. This work, aims to investigate the forms of collective use in which the memories of former combatants of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) are used. Promoting a historiographical analysis of contemporary memory, widely disseminated by associations, reaffirmed by monuments and practiced in commemorations, is one of the ways to understand the intricacies of the collective construction of memory and to which practices these discourses are linked. In this sense, the essential sources for the construction of this work besides the oral sources, obtained through the participation of veterans of the FEB and their descendants, are the documents produced within the minutes, leaflets, promotional materials and documents that somehow convey the speeches produced by the institutions. The studies already carried out about the collective memory, identity and social reintegration of FEB veterans were fundamental for this work and for a critical analysis of the processes inherent in the construction, uses and abuses related to the memories that involve the participation of Brazil in World War II. This work, meets the proposals thought in the Professional Master in Cultural Heritage, Landscapes and Citizenship since, promotes an analysis about not only the monuments, but also especially the memories that these artifacts support. Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
