Personal Account of hostage Ann Fleming of the Carrasco Affair: Part 1

    No full text
A Speech by Mrs Ann Fleming, hostage in the Carrasco affair at the Wall Unit on July 24, 1974-August 3, 1974, delivered to the Huntsville Study Club on March 9, 2000. The speech was recorded by Janice Lange at the First Nation Bank Flag Room in Huntsville, TX. Mrs. Ann (Herman) Fleming describes the personal and human elements of being held hostage along with the other employees of the Texas Department of corrections in the library of the Walls Unit for eleven days. Mrs Fleming was a summertime temporary librarian who was swept up in the events of July 1974. She portrays the human element in the siege: treatment of the hostages by their captors and the interactions of the hostages with each other and with their captors. She describes her fears, her faith, and her final letters to her husband and daughters. She describes the selection of Julia Standley and Von Beseda to form the human shield in Carrasco's bid for freedom and her conviction that all the hostages would be killed in the breakout attempt. She relates moments of humor and comic relief within the hostage group and between captors and hostages, while conveying the seeming random cruelty of the captors. She closes with the reading of a tribute written to Mrs. Fleming and her husband by Fred Gomez Carrasco, the leader of the breakout attempt
