Chromatographic evaluation of urinary N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine: an ergogenic drug.
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is a sulphidryl group donor widely used since many years in the treatment of respiratory disorders and in paracetamol poisoning. Its principal properties however are related to its activity as a direct free radical scavenger and to its capacity of increasing intracellular cysteine levels thus potentiating cell natural defence mechanisms against oxidative damage. Recently NAC (150 mg/kg intravenous) has been used to increase by over 15% the forces sustained during muscular fatigue induced by low stimulus frequencies. Application of NAC in sport medicine as enhancer of performance in endurance exercise (e.g. cycling or running) will be limited by important side effects of the drug but it is likely a different way of administration or a different scavenger would overcome this problem. If controlled trials will be able to confirm any positive effects in muscular fatigue inhibition, NAC could have important practical implications in professional sports and could be added to the list of banned substances. In light of recent interest in the relationship of NAC to fatigue it is essential that a facile, reliable assay be devised for its determination in biological fluids. We have set up a Chromatographic HPLC method for acetyl cysteine determination in urine samples. This isocratic procedure, fast and requiring no elaborate pre-assay work, could help to set urinary concentrations in case of therapeutical use (200-600 mg/day) or when elevated levels are assumed as doping agent in order to impart an unfair advantage in endurance test
Doping ed età evolutiva
The use of doping agents in the last years has reached epidemic proportions involving not only elite athletes but also recreational athletes. It's sure that in American and European high schools between 3 and 12% of male and approximately 1% of female used anabolic steroids. Football players report the highest use while track and field athletes use them least. Nonmedical use of these drugs is in contrast with the Olympic spirit because distort natural difference between athletes and is dangerous for adolescents psychophysics integrity. A great number of teenagers use doping agents to improve their athletic performance following coach's advice or to imitate elite athletes that use these drugs. Others teenagers not involved in sports take this substances only to improve physical appearance and to have a grown-up look The primary care of physicians must be to inform and educate teenagers, coaches and teachers about the effect and the side effect of the doping agents
Colour and emotion: the use of the colours of Lüscher test in the artistic field
The Lüscher colour test was created by the Swiss psychologist Max Lüscher in 1949 and consists of several
coloured patches that can be used to assess the patient's psychological state and profile. The main advantage
of this test is its high usability and trustability.
After a preliminary analysis of using Lüscher colours, we set up a first perceptive test asking 20 subjects to
associate adjectives with Lüscher's colours freely. This first test aims at defining if the basic colour terms
defined by Lüscher and used to create psychological assessments are coherent and consistent in a free termassociation
test.
After this first perceptive test, we integrated Lüscher's basic colours with the ones used by Kandinskij, an artist
who Lüscher's colour theories have strongly influenced. In this second test, we considered both Lüscher and
Kandinskij basic colours. We asked 49 people to associate the colours with specific terms derived from the
Lüscher theory, Kandinskij system and the first test.
From the analysis of these two experiments, it has been possible to demonstrate a strong coherence of
specific colour-terms associations, which are consistent with the introduction of controlled colour shifts, while
other colour-terms associations present a higher variability
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
