Aggregate Dynamics with Sectoral Price Stickiness Heterogeneity and Aggregate Real Shocks

    No full text
This paper investigates the relationship between heterogeneity in sectoral price stickiness and the response of the economy to aggregate real shocks. We show that sectoral heterogeneity reduces inflation persistence for a constant average duration of price spells, and that inflation persistence can fall despite duration increases associated with increases in heterogeneity. We also find that sectoral heterogeneity reduces the persistence and volatility of interest rate and output gap for a constant price spells duration, while the qualitative impact on inflation volatility tends to be positive. A relevant policy implication is that neglecting price stickiness heterogeneity can impair the economic dynamics assessment

Institutional mandates for macroeconomic and financial stability

    No full text
The performance of alternative institutional mandates in achieving macroeconomic and financial stability is studied in a model with financial frictions and reserve requirements as the main instrument of macroprudential regulation. The analysis shows that under a policy loss evaluation approach, coordination leads to a substantial gain in stability in response to various shocks, with the policy interest rate and the required reserve ratio exhibiting a high degree of complementarity. The latter is also more efficient than the former in promoting financial stability. In addition, it is optimal to delegate the financial stability goal also to the monetary authority when the financial regulator only operates a credit-based reserve requirements rule. These results hold under a utility-based welfare evaluation approach as well, as long as the central bank's institutional mandate focuses mainly on macroeconomic stability. Thus, when the mandate bestowed to policymakers by society accounts for financial stability, evaluating the performance of policy regimes based solely on a welfare criterion could be inappropriate

Electrical systems for public lighting with high energy efficiency and high technological content

    No full text
Public lighting systems consist in a complex of different technical systems: lighting, electrical, mechanical and electronic. The presence of electrical components and power lines exposed to atmospheric stresses and accessible to all citizens determines a situation of electrical risk that must be managed during the entire life cycle of the system: design, installation and maintenance, in order to guarantee the highest level of safety for all. The paper suggests energy and safety criteria useful for the optimized design of the system andto improve its maintainability. The prospected energy performance of the system can be considered as an important design criterion. The adoption of a class II insulation system needs special requirements for the check of its performance during the life. The paper suggests the adoption of a special smart panel with a special component useful to make the periodic insulation verification

Hindering human capital accumulation: A hidden cost of the silent mafia?

    No full text
Since the 1970s, mafias have embedded outside South Italy though employing steadily less violence in establishing their illegal business. Could this rooting and social adaptation in the most productive areas of the country impair human capital accumulation? We provide evidence of a decline in human capital in those areas that were initially wealthy and innovative before mafias established their presence and influence. Our estimates suggest that, for the top 75% of mafia-infiltrated provinces, a reduction by 25 percentiles in their position within the mafia ranking could increase the number of university graduates per capita by 4–21%

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
