    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Technologies and architectures for high-rate optical random access memories

    Within the framework of this PhD thesis, a solid theoretical analysis was developed, describing the frequency transfer function of two of the main optical memory circuit categories, those based on coupled switching elements and those based on a single switching element and a feedback loop, taking into account all of their architectural aspects. The analysis relies on simplified mathematical expressions based on first-order perturbation theory approximations, making it possible to define those architectural parameters which impact on the performance and qualitative response characteristics of optical memory circuits. An analysis of the response of a coupled SOA-MZI-based optical RAM circuit was performed, as well as that of an optical Flip-Flop circuit based on a single SOA-MZI interferometer and a feedback loop. Finally, a direct comparison and juxtaposition of the two aforementioned optical memory architecture categories was performed, concluding to selection guidelines for operation reaching or even exceeding rates of 40GHz. Following, in response to the need for limiting the power consumption and the size of optical RAM circuits, a novel optical RAM circuit based on just 3 semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) was designed and experimentally implemented. In this setup, the wavelength dimension was exploited for the first time in order to reduce the number of required active components and thus to directly reduce the power consumption and total size of the circuit, through the exploitation of WDM. Bring optical RAM photonic integrated circuits a step closer, the design and experimental evaluation of an integrated chip on a silicon-on-insulator platform was performed, incorporating the main passive and active components required for the constitution of functional optical RAM circuits, compatible with CMOS integration technology. The active structures were formed after the bonding of semiconductor optical amplifier arrays on the silicon-on-insulator platform using the thermo-compression bonding technique, while having the silicon waveguides aligned on both sides of the active waveguide, paving the way for the formation of complex integrated circuits. Functional SOA-MZI interferometers were formed, achieving successful Wavelength Conversion at 12.5 Gb/s. The final part of this PhD thesis describes the fabrication procedure and the experimental performance analysis of an SOA based on the temperature-insensitive GaInNAs (dilute nitride) semiconductor material, operating in the 1.3μm region, showed exceptionally high gain reaching 28dB, along with gain recovery times reaching 100ps. These were record values for an SOA based on GaInNAs technology, paving the way for the successful application of the technology in optical RAM circuits, while the device operated successfully as wavelength converter at up to 10 Gb/s. Additionally, the device showed enhanced stability in the operation under increased temperature, a fact that can lead to dense integration capability on the silicon-on-insulator platform, obtaining chips with reduced size and with operation capabilities in increased temperature conditions.Στο πλαίσιο της διατριβής αυτής, αναπτύχθηκε για πρώτη φορά μια ενιαία θεωρητική ανάλυση που περιγράφει τη φασματική συνάρτηση μεταφοράς των δύο κυριότερων κατηγοριών κυκλωμάτων οπτικής μνήμης, που βασίζονται σε συζευγμένα μεταγωγικά στοιχεία ή σε μεταγωγικά στοιχεία και βρόχο ανάδρασης, λαμβάνοντας υπ’ όψη όλα τα αρχιτεκτονικά χαρακτηριστικά τους. Η ανάλυση βασίζεται σε απλουστευμένες αναλυτικές μαθηματικές εκφράσεις της θεωρίας διαταραχών, καθιστώντας εφικτό τον προσδιορισμό των αρχιτεκτονικών παραμέτρων εκείνων που επιδρούν στην απόδοση και ποιοτική απόκριση των κυκλωμάτων οπτικής μνήμης. Έγινε ανάλυση της απόκρισης κυκλώματος μνήμης RAM συζευγμένων SOA-MZI, καθώς και κυκλώματος οπτικού Flip-Flop βασισμένου σε SOA-MZI και βρόχο ανάδρασης, ενώ έγινε ευθεία σύγκριση και αντιπαράθεση των δύο παραπάνω μεγάλων κατηγοριών αρχιτεκτονικών οπτικής μνήμης. Η ανάλυση που διενεργήθηκε κατέληξε σε οδηγίες εφαρμογής της εκάστοτε αρχιτεκτονικής ανά περίπτωση και σε προσδιορισμό της μέγιστης απόδοσης κάθε κυκλώματος ανά κατηγορία μετρικών για επίτευξης ταχυτήτων της τάξης των 40GHz. Ακολούθως, ως απάντηση στην ανάγκη για περιορισμό της κατανάλωσης ενέργειας και του μεγέθους των κυκλωμάτων οπτικής μνήμης RAM, σχεδιάστηκε και υλοποιήθηκε πειραματικά κύκλωμα οπτικής μνήμης RAM που βασίζεται μόλις σε 3 οπτικούς ενισχυτές ημιαγωγού. Στη συγκεκριμένη διάταξη, αξιοποιήθηκε για πρώτη φορά η διάσταση του μήκους κύματος για μείωση του αριθμού των απαιτούμενων ενεργών στοιχείων και άρα άμεση μείωση της κατανάλωσης ενέργειας και του συνολικού μεγέθους του κυκλώματος, μέσω εκμετάλλευσης της πολυπλεξίας μήκους κύματος (WDM). Φέρνοντας τα ολοκληρωμένα κυκλώματα οπτικής μνήμης RAM ένα βήμα πιο κοντά, διενεργήθηκε ο σχεδιασμός και η πειραματική ανάλυση ολοκληρωμένου chip σε πλατφόρμα πυριτίου-σε-μονωτή, που περιελάμβανε τις βασικότερες ενεργές και παθητικές διατάξεις για τη σύσταση λειτουργικών κυκλωμάτων οπτικής μνήμης RAM συμβατών με τεχνολογία ολοκλήρωσης CMOS. Οι ενεργές διατάξεις σχηματίστηκαν μετά από ενσωμάτωση συστοιχιών ενισχυτών SOA στην πλατφόρμα πυριτίου-σε-μονωτή με χρήση της τεχνικής θερμοσυγκόλλησης, έχοντας για πρώτη φορά και στις δύο πλευρές ευθυγραμμισμένους τους οπτικούς κυματοδηγούς του chip πυριτίου και ανοίγοντας το δρόμο για τη σύσταση πολύπλοκων ολοκληρωμένων κυκλωμάτων. Σχηματίστηκαν λειτουργικά ολοκληρωμένα συμβολόμετρα SOA-MZI με επιτυχή λειτουργία μετατροπής μήκους κύματος στα 12.5 Gb/s. Στο τελικό μέρος της διατριβής περιγράφεται η διαδικασία κατασκευής και πειραματικής ανάλυσης SOA που βασίστηκε στο ανθεκτικό στην αλλαγή θερμοκρασίας υλικό ημιαγωγού GaInNAs (dilute nitride). Ο κατασκευασθείς SOA που λειτουργεί στην περιοχή των 1.3μm, παρουσίασε εξαιρετικά υψηλό κέρδος, που άγγιξε τα 28dB, καθώς και χρόνους επαναφοράς φορέων κέρδους που έφταναν τα 100ps. Και οι δύο παραπάνω τιμές αποτελούν ρεκόρ απόδοσης για οπτικό ενισχυτή ημιαγωγού τεχνολογίας GaInNAs, ανοίγοντας το δρόμο για επιτυχή εφαρμογή σε κυκλώματα οπτικής μνήμης, ενώ η συσκευή λειτούργησε επιτυχώς ως μετατροπέας μήκους κύματος σε ταχύτητες έως και 10 Gb/s. Επιπλέον, η συσκευή επέδειξε εξαιρετική ανοχή στη λειτουργία υπό αυξημένη θερμοκρασία, γεγονός που μπορεί να οδηγήσει σε δυνατότητα ολοκλήρωσης συστοιχιών της συσκευής σε πλατφόρμα SOI υψηλής πυκνότητας, αποκτώντας έτσι chip μειωμένου μεγέθους και με ικανότητα λειτουργίας στις συνθήκες αυξημένης θερμοκρασίας

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
