On the association of terrestrial gamma-ray bursts with lightning and implications for sprites

    No full text
Measurements of ELF/VLF radio atmospherics (sferics) at Palmer Station, Antarctica, provide evidence of active thunderstorms near the inferred source regions of two different gamma-ray bursts of terrestrial origin [Fishman et al., 1994]. In one case, a relatively intense sferic occurring within ±1.5 ms of the time of the gamma-ray burst provides the first indication of a direct association of this burst with a lightning discharge. This sferic and many others launched by positive cloud-to-ground (CG) discharges and observed at Palmer during the periods studied exhibit 'slow tail' waveforms, indicative of continuing currents in the causative lightning discharges. The slow tails of these sferics are similar to those of sferics originating in positive CG discharges that are associated with sprites

    Optical/multiwavelength observations of GRB afterglows

I review gamma-ray burst optical/multiwavelength afterglow observations since 1997, when the first counterparts to GRBs were discovered. I discuss what we have learned from multiwavelength observations of GRB afterglows in relation to the 'standard' fireball plus relativistic blast-wave models. To first order, the 'standard' model describes the afterglow observations well, but a wealth of information can be gathered from the deviations of GRB afterglow observations from this 'standard' model. These deviations provide information on the nature of the progenitor and on the physics of GRB production. In particular, I focus on the possible connection of GRBs to supernovae, on jet and circumstellar wind models, on the early-time afterglow, and on the emission from the reverse shock

Author Meg Groeling “takes a minor but well-known story, amplifies it with new evidence, and enhances its meaning by connecting it to larger social and political trends”—history done right. In the end, reviewer Gerald Prokopowicz praises the book as an example of historical scholarship written from outside the ivory tower that both educates and entertains

Signaling under threats: evidence of voluntary disclosure in corporate control contests

    No full text
We investigate voluntary disclosure strategies in contested takeovers and the associated economic consequences. Using a difference-in-differences research design and propensity score matching, we find that relative to friendly takeovers, target management in contested takeovers provides more earnings guidance and conveys more good news during the takeover. Moreover, voluntary disclosure helps contested targets negotiate a better offer and the results are stronger for targets with more information asymmetry. Collectively, targets adopt voluntary disclosure and alter their strategies under the threat of contested takeover to enhance their bargaining power. Voluntary disclosure by contested targets serves as a negotiation tactic that potentially benefits target shareholders.Peer reviewe
