Dr. Rev. Michael Costanzo asked me to write an article for Verbum 2012. I know Father Costanzo as my family is a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Penfield where Father Costanzo often helps out. I thought I would write a little about my experience at St. John Fisher College for the Alumni Corner. It has been over 30 years since I first walked onto the St. John Fisher College campus in the fall of 1979 as an incoming freshman, but it doesn’t seem that long ago. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life as I entered college, but was excited about beginning college. It wasn’t easy for me choosing a college when I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I was from Rochester and I chose Fisher because I decided to stay local, Fisher had a very good reputation in many different academic disciplines, and I liked the fact that, at Fisher, religion would be a part of the academic life. At that time, Fisher was mainly a commuter school with over 60% of the students commuting. There wasn’t much dorm space at that time. A main reason I commuted was to save money. To this day I regret that decision as I didn’t get the full experience of college life by living on campus. I came for my classes and immediately left after my last class each day to head to a part-time job or to return home

Michael Fisher, founder and director of The Fearology Institute and a long time researcher-educator and artist, responds to Michael Moore's recent tv interview with Amy Goodman (of Democracy Now)--the topic is Moore's newest political documentary "Fahrenheit 11/9". Fisher picks out a key moment in the interview where Moore asks people to (more or less) be motivated by fear/terror to bring down the current American regime and stop the elites from running the country. Fisher, offers his respectful critique and an alternative, both embracing Moore's contribution but going beyond it based on fearological analysis. Father Michael Costanzo was a man who wore his learning lightly. He was constantly reading and reflecting. I had many fascinating conversations with him over the years regarding his views on such figures as Edith Stein, Vincent Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, and Simone Weil, all of whose complete works he had immersed himself in. He was eager to share what he had learned from them, and encouraged me to read them as well

The Influence of Irving Fisher on Milton Friedman’s Monetary Economics
Get PDFThis paper examines the influence of Irving Fisher’s writings on Milton Friedman’s work in monetary economics. We focus first on Fisher’s influences in monetary theory (the quantity theory of money, the Fisher effect, Gibson’s Paradox, the monetary theory of business cycles, and the Phillips Curve, and empirics, e.g. distributed lags.). Then we discuss Fisher and Friedman's views on monetary policy and various schemes for monetary reform (the k% rule, freezing the monetary base, the compensated dollar, a mandate for price stability, 100% reserve money, and stamped money.) Assessing the influence of an earlier economist's writings on that of later scholars is a challenge. As a science progresses the views of its earlier pioneers are absorbed in the weltanschauung. Fisher's Purchasing Power of Money as well as the work of Pigou and Marshall were the basic building blocks for later students of monetary economics. Thus, the Chicago School of the 1930s absorbed Fisher's approach, and Friedman learned from them. However, in some salient aspects of Friedman's work we can clearly detect a major direct influence of Fisher's writings on Friedman's. Thus, for example with the buildup of inflation in the 1960s Friedman adopted the Fisher effect and Fisher's empirical approach to inflationary expectations into his analysis. Thus, Fisher's influence on Friedman was both indirect through the Chicago School and direct. Regardless of the weight attached to the two influences, Fisher' impact on Friedman was profound.

Get PDFThere is a long-standing debate as to whether the Fisher effect operated during the classical gold standard period. We break new ground on this question by developing a market-based measure of general inflation expectations during the gold standard. Since the gold-silver price ratio was widely used to track inflation during the gold standard period, we are able to derive a measure of inflation expectations using the interest-rate differential between Austrian silver and gold perpetuity bonds with identical terms. Our empirical evidence suggests that inflation expectations exhibited significant persistence at the weekly, monthly, and annual frequencies. We also find that market participants updated long-run inflation expectations following short-run changes in the forward silver price of gold. The evidence suggests the operation of a long-run Fisher effect during the classical gold standard period.

Anyone who had the pleasure of conversing with Fr. Michael, either over coffee in his office or at the various little cafes he favored, knew him to be a very complicated man. My favorite conversations were about his love for opera (for which I remain only a neophyte) and his poetry. Ultimately, our talks led him to give me the privilege of writing the forward to his collection of poems Water Lilies. This is what I best remember of Fr. Michael and can think of no better tribute to him than to examine the complexity of his thoughts found in this particular work. Written over three decades, do not be tempted to see the change in voice as an evolution of spirit, his reflections changing with age. It is, rather, much like his beloved opera -- images of life filled with joy, despair, hope, and redemption
