Citation expectations: are they realized? Study of the Matthew index for Russian papers published abroad
No full textWe consider the "Matthew effect" in the citation process which leads to reallocation (or misallocation) of the citations received by scientific papers within the same journals. The case when such reallocation correlates with a country where an author works is investigated. Russian papers in chemistry and physics published abroad were examined. We found that in both disciplines in about 60% of journals Russian papers are cited less than average ones. However, if we consider each discipline as a whole, citedness of a Russian paper in physics will be on the average level, while chemistry publications receive about 16% citations less than one may expect from the citedness of the journals where they appear. Moreover, Russian chemistry papers mostly become undercited in the leading journals of the field. Characteristics of a "Matthew index" indicator and its significance for scientometric studies are also discussed
Artful living and the eradication of worry in Søren Kierkegaard's interpretation of Matthew 6:24-34
No full textDanish thinker Søren Kierkegaard published fourteen discourses, across four collections, on Matthew 6:24-34. The repeated readings of the biblical text, whose themes include the choice between God and mammon, worry, what it means to consider the birds and lilies, and how to seek first the kingdom of God, converge with Kierkegaard’s interest in anxiety, despair, worry, subjectivity, indirect communication, choice, the moment, and life before God. Accordingly, the discourses make connections with his larger works, elucidate frequently explored Kierkegaardian themes in recent scholarship, and contribute to his critique of nineteenth-century Copenhagen. Additionally, the collections present an interpretation of each verse and phrase of Matthew’s text and, held up against modern Matthew scholarship, they correlate with and contribute to Sermon on the Mount and New Testament studies. Kierkegaard’s reading of Matthew also holds implications for the practice of biblical interpretation as it promotes the importance of awareness of sin, interestedness, and appropriation as central to proper reading. His emphasis on Christ as the primary exemplar of Matthew’s text adds an additional Christological element to his hermeneutic. Furthermore, the discourses serve as spiritual treatises which provide the reader with theological terminology to help confront the problem of worry and suffering. In light of a human being’s distinctiveness as imago Dei, Kierkegaard elucidates ways an individual may respond artfully to the ongoing possibility of worry, a possibility which the discourses connect with Christian anthropology and external labels associated with possessions and status. The Matthew 6 discourses intimate Kierkegaard’s sympathy with classic Christian spirituality and, in combination with the cultural-ecclesiastical critique, the creative exegesis, and the in-depth analysis of the cause of and cure for worry, his work emerges as an excellent example of spiritual theology
Wisdom and apocalyptic in the Gospel of Matthew : a comparative study with 1 Enoch and 4QInstruction
No full textRecent scholarship has demonstrated that Matthew's gospel has significantly developed
both sapiential and apocalyptic elements within its narrative. Little attention has been paid,
however, to the question of how these two features of Matthew's gospel might relate to one
another. It is this gap in scholarly literature that the present study is intended to fill, by means of a
comparative study with two other texts of mixed genre: 1 Enoch and 4Qlnstruction.
An examination of these texts demonstrates that each is marked by an inaugurated
eschatology, within which the revealing of wisdom to an elect group, defined in distinction to the
Jewish parent group, serves as the pivotal moment of inauguration. In addition, within
4Qlnstruction the idea is developed that possession of this revealed wisdom allows the remnant
to live in fidelity to the will of the Creator and to the patterns built-in to the original creation.
Thus, possession of revealed wisdom facilitates a recovery of creation.
These findings provide lines of enquiry that may be brought to Matthew. Three sections
of the gospel are examined (chapters 5-7; 11-12; 24-25). It is argued that Jesus is presented as an
eschatological figure who reveals wisdom to an elect group. This wisdom cannot be reduced to
great moral insight or interpretation of Torah, but is presented as prophetic revelation, happening
in eschatological time. It remains the case, however, that Matthew presents it as wisdom and
presents Jesus as a sage.
More tentatively, it is suggested that creation provides the patterns for the ethical
requirements of Jesus' wisdom, thus indicating that the idea of restored creation is also at work in
Matthew. The fall of the temple may also be connected in Matthew's narrative to such a
restoration, but again, the evidence for this is not clear

Matthew’s Emmanuel Messiah: a paradigm of presence for god's people
No full textThe motif of divine presence is a clear phenomenon within the Gospel of Matthew. The modern critical means for assessing the ancient biblical text have multiplied to the point, some claim, of disparity. This study employs both narrative and redaction criticism in an attempt to respond authentically to the structural, historical and theological dimensions of Matthew's Gospel. This study begins with the presumption of the wholeness and integrity of Matthew's narrative, and assumes the gospel story to have an inherently dramatic structure which invites readers to inhabit imaginatively its narrative world and respond to its call. But since we are concerned with the role of both reader and author, this study also assumes a text with an historical author and context. The introduction focuses on the meta-critical dilemma facing New Testament students - what is the text and how do we read it? - and seeks some balance in terms of Krieger's analogy of the text as both window and mirror. Proposed is a narrative reading of Matthew's presence motif alongside a redaction critical assessment of it. In Chapter 2 the elements of narrative theory are introduced and relevant terms defined: the structure of narrative, the function of the narrator, points of view. Chapter 3 becomes an exercise in narrative reading, with Matthew's presence motif providing the focus, and the implied reader’s interaction with the story being predominant in interpretation. Characters, rhetorical devices, and points of view are discussed, to understand the motif's development throughout the story's progress. The thrust of Chapter 4 is thereafter to examine divine presence as a dominant motif within Matthew's most important literary context: the Jewish scriptures. Here the primary paradigms of divine presence provided by the Patriarchs, the Sinai experience, and the Davidic-Zion traditions are assessed. Chapter 5 follows with a more detailed examination of the OT "I am with you/God is with us" formula and its µeo' vµwv/ηuwv language, so strongly connected to Matthew's presence motif. Chapters 6-8 build on these investigations with a closer analysis of the three critical "presence passages" of Mt 1:23. 18:20 and 28:20. The passages and their contexts are probed from a redaction critical perspective, guided by the narrative investigation of Chapter 3, and the background from Chapters 4 and 5.The three major "presence passages" examined in Chapters 6-8 are also complimented by a number of secondary issues: worship, wisdom, the Spirit and the poor in Matthew, and their relation to Jesus' divine presence. These are discussed in Chapter 9. Chapter 10 summarizes and looks briefly at some implications. Matthew' presence motif proves to be an important element of the Gospel’s rhetorical design, redactional strategy and Christology. The presence of Jesus, the Emmanuel Messiah, exhibited in his risen authority, becomes the focus of his people's hopes and experiences in the post-Easter world. Beauty for the Present: Mill, Arnold, Ruskin and Aesthetic Education
No full textThe present thesis examines the idea of aesthetic education of three eminent Victorians: John Stuart Mill, Matthew Arnold and John Ruskin. By focusing on the essence of what they meant with ‘the cultivation of the beautiful’ and, more importantly, the way their ideas of beauty informed their criticism of society, my study aims to contribute to our understanding of the idea of aesthetic education in the Victorian context and, further, to participate in a recent debate about the nature of beauty and aesthetic education.
Chapter One focuses on John Stuart Mill’s concept of ‘feeling’ in a series of essays. I will demonstrate how Mill’s idea of ‘aesthetic education’ was an ‘education of feelings,’ and moreover, how this idea was integrated into his literary criticism, his later critique of democratisation, his description of an ideal liberal society and even his own style of writing. Chapter Two contains a comparative study of Matthew Arnold and Friedrich Schiller. Through a rereading of Arnold, I will argue that his idea of aesthetic education is essentially Schillerian and that their resemblance consists primarily in their stress on the importance of aesthetic unity for modern life, which was becoming increasingly fragmentary and multitudinous. Chapter Three examines John Ruskin’s idea of aesthetic education and concentrates particularly on the cultivation of perception. Perception, as I shall show, was pivotal in Ruskin’s idea of aesthetic education. Just as what happened in Mill and Arnold, the emphasis on the education of seeing continued from his early writings well into his art and social criticisms. It not only differentiated him from his fellow art critics; the conviction that people should perceive with a pure heart also enabled him to link observation of artistic details with moral criticism of contemporary society and, thereby, to turn the cultivation of the beautiful into a moral-aesthetic experience
A Study on Matthew Bourne&apos;s Swan Lake: Based on Intertextuality Concept
No full textThis study aims to derive a new interpretation on Matthew Bourne&apos;s Swan Lake by analyzing the dance work&apos;s texts based on intertextuality theory and examining the relationship between texts considering the context and their background.
According to the intertextuality theory, an author&apos;s role is only limited to combine existing texts and images. Therefore, texts in a work can function in a three-dimensional dialogue with a horizontal axis connecting the author and the reader and a vertical axis linking one text to others. This opens infinite possibilities for text interpretation, which goes beyond the work itself and takes a broader view on the three-dimensional dialogue between the author, the reader and other texts.
Janet Lansdale has adopted an intertextuality approach to dance analysis. Based on the assumption that a dance and its texts always co-exist, she identifies each element of the work including movements related to dance text, the musical text chosen, images, and ideas, and also investigates how meaning structures interact with each other in the dance. In addition, she defines a choreographer as a person to co-create a new text called &quot;audience,&quot; shedding a new light on the role of the audience in creating one piece of dance.
Based on a dance analysis framework presented by Lansdale, this paper analyzes Matthew Bourne&apos;s Swan Lake from four perspectives: dancers, movement text, visual text and aural text. The result of the analysis emphasizes on psychological and literary texts found in the relationship between the Prince, the Queen, the Swan and the Girlfriend, and historical text demonstrated in the relationship between the Prince and the Girlfriend.
The intertextuality concept helped interpret the relationship between the main character (the Prince) and other characters (the Queen, the Swan, and the Girlfriend) and to find out psychological, literary, and historical texts adopted in the ballet. This study assumes that the dance work appeals to the audience with various backgrounds and points of view thanks to the following reason: a psychological factor targeting the common consciousness and unconsciousness of human beings, a literary factor attracting readers regardless of time, and a historical factor being known to many people. These factors enable a common interpretation of the dance work and also blur the line between fantasy and reality and between characters and the audience.
Matthew Bourne&apos;s Swan Lake creates innovative meanings by exploring interrelationship between various texts. While adopting psychological, literary, and historical texts as well as texts of other artistic works, it generates a new meaning and interpretation through transformation and reconstruction. In this regard, the importance of this study lies in providing more possibilities for the interpretation of Matthew Bourne&apos;s Swan Lake based on intertextuality concept.;본 연구는 매튜 본(Matthew Bourne)의 백조의 호수를 상호텍스트성 이론을 기반으로 춤 작품 텍스트 자체를 분석하고, 춤 작품 텍스트의 맥락과 배경을 고려하여 텍스트들 간의 관계성을 분석하여 본 작품에 대한 새로운 해석을 도출하는데 그 목적이 있다.
상호텍스트성 이론에서 작가란 이미 존재한 텍스트, 이미지 등을 조합하는 사람이기 때문에 작품의 텍스트는 작품을 만든 이와 작품을 읽는 자와의 수평적 관계와 다른 텍스트와의 수직적 관계, 즉 3차원적인 대화 속에서 기능한다. 이것은 텍스트에 대한 무한한 해석의 가능성을 의미한다. 해석은 작품 자체를 넘어서서 작가, 독자, 다른 텍스트 간의 3차원적 대화를 폭넓게 조망하기 때문이다.
란스데일(Janet Lansdale)은 이러한 상호텍스트성을 무용에 적용시킨다. 그는 무용작품과 무용 텍스트는 항상 함께 존재한다는 것을 전제로 하여 무용텍스트와 관련된 동작, 선택한 음악 텍스트, 사용된 이미지, 사용하는 아이디어 등 작품 조각들의 요소들을 읽어내고, 무용의 의미 구조들이 어떻게 상호 작용하는지를 조망한다. 이 이론에서는 또한 관객이란 텍스트를 함께 창조하는 자라고 규정하여 작품 창조과정에서 관객의 역할을 재조명 한다.
란스데일이 제시한 무용 분석 틀을 적용하여 매튜 본의 백조의 호수를 무용수, 동작텍스트, 시각적 텍스트, 청각적 텍스트 등 네 영역으로 나누어 분석하였다. 분석결과 매튜 본의 백조의 호수를 극의 중심인물인 왕자, 여왕, 백조, 여자 친구와의 관계 속에서 발견되는 심리학적, 문학적 텍스트와 왕자와 여자 친구의 캐릭터와 관계에서 발견되는 역사적 텍스트에 주목해 보았다.
매튜 본의 백조의 호수를 상호텍스트성 이론을 기반으로 왕자를 중심으로 여왕, 백조, 여자 친구의 관계성을 살펴보고, 이에 대한 해석과정을 통해 작품 속에 차용된 심리학적, 문학적, 역사적 텍스트를 발견할 수 있었다. 즉 매튜 본의 백조의 호수에는 다양한 성장배경과 가치관을 가진 여러 관객들에게 공감을 불러일으킨 요인으로 인간의 공통된 의식과 무의식을 연구대상으로 하는 심리학적 요인과 시대를 불문하고 여러 사람에게 읽히는 문학적 요인 그리고 많은 이들에게 친숙한 역사적 요인이 있다. 이 요인들이 어우러져 본 작품에 대하여 새로운 해석을 할 수 있는 기반으로 작용하고 있다. 이를 통해 작품은 환상과 현실, 작품 속 인물과 작품 밖 관객과의 경계를 넘나들게 만드는 통로를 마련하고 있다.

Fast, accurate power measurement and optimization for microprocessor platforms
No full textPower and energy consumption have become important for all computers, but the tools used to measure and optimize power on physical hardware lag far behind performance focused tools. Existing measurement apparata have low analog bandwidth, do not explicitly correlate power data with processor activity, and are not explained in sufficient detail to quantify uncertainty in their data. We present the design, implementation, and application of Jouler’s Loupe, a measurement device that overcomes these obstacles and enables a new generation of fast, fundamentally sound energy-efficiency-focused tools.
