A Reliable Pre-Processing for the Simulation of Friction Joints in Turbomachineries and its Validation: A Case Study With Policontact
Industry and University collaborates to develop methods to simulate the nonlinear dynamics of components in rotating assemblies like turbine or compressor modules in the presence of friction joints. This collaboration produced fruitful results providing a family of numerical solvers with the goal of foreseeing the safety margins against High Cycle Fatigue failure. Softwares are therefore intended as design tools to exploit the damping effect of joints by controlling geometrical features, materials and contact loads. Contact models, reduction techniques to handle complex blade geometries modeled by Finite Element softwares, and numerical techniques to solve the nonlinear equations of motion are refined to provide the level of vibration amplitude as fast as possible by keeping the representativeness of the physical phenomena that are involved. A reliable compromise between speed and accuracy must be confirmed by several 'gates' to pass through during all the simulation process, in particular during pre-processing phase. The objective of this paper is to propose a good practice made of a list of actions to check the goodness of the mathematical basis to obtain reliable results from simulation. Experience gained thanks to the long-lasting collaboration between Politecnico di Torino and GE Avio for the development of the software Policontact provides a case study of an effective synthesis between two requirements that are often opposed to each other: complex mathematical models to simulate the nonlinear forced response of rotating components on one side and a robust, confident implementation of an easy-to-use tool intended for industrial staff with complementary background on the other side
Tip-timing measurements of transient vibrations in mistuned bladed disks
Bladed disks are usually characterized by a rich dynamic response during service due to the occurrence of several mode shapes that vibrate at resonance within the operative range. In particular, during start-ups and shutdowns, the variable speed causes a temporary crossing of resonance that cannot be neglected to determine stress envelope and safety margins of the system during its whole mission. In fact, fluid flow induces fluctuating loads with variable frequencies (non-stationary regime) on the blades being responsible of a dynamic response which does not follow the so-called steady-state (stationary) response. This paper proposes a novel post-processing method for Blade Tip-Timing (BTT) measurements for the identification of the resonance parameters of mistuned bladed disks working in non-stationary operative conditions. The method is based on a two degrees of freedom model (2DOF) and focuses on transient resonances in which two mistuned modes with close resonance frequencies are involved in the dynamic response. In such circumstances, the identification method based on the single degree of freedom (1DOF) model usually fails.To verify the effectiveness of the method, numerical and experimental investigations have been performed. First, a mathematical simulator based on a lumped parameter model of a bladed disk system is used to generate the BTT simulated data. Experimental signals are measured using a commercial BTT system through a set of optical probes mounted circumferentially around a rotating dummy blisk. It is shown that the method produces accurate predictions for the numerical simulation, even in the presence of considerable noise levels. Moreover, experimental results confirm a successful implementation of the method on the actual BTT measurements
A Novel Test Rig for the Basic Nonlinear Characterization of Bolted Joints
The paper aims at performing a comprehensive experimental study on the peculiar properties of a bolted joint, and investigates the damping induced at different interfaces (between flanges, bolt head/nut and flange, threads) during vibrations. A novel, simplified, single-bolt system joining a two-beam structure is designed and tested. Experimental results under different boundary conditions are presented, and the influence of the harmonic excitation force, as well as the bolt tension, is investigated. The test results show how the contact interface between the clamped flanges plays an important role in terms of frictional damping provided to the system during vibration, while the contact interfaces between the head/nut and flange, and secondarily between the threads, affect the system response at a less, but not negligible, extent. The test setup and test procedure can provide a database to validate single bolt contact models to be included in a more complex structure
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
