Compositional Differences in Construction and Demolition Wastes (CDWs) for Geopolymer Mortars: A Comparative Study Using Different Precursors and Alkaline Reagents
No full textoai:pubblicazioni.unicam.it:11581/485505In the view of the recycling and upscaling processes of waste materials, three different precursors, namely metakaolin, fly ash and volcanic ash, were mixed with Na- or K-silicate to produce binders aimed for the synthesis of geopolymer mortars based on construction and demolition wastes (CDWs). These later, used as aggregates in amount of 50 wt.%, were sampled in two geologically different Italian areas. A comparative study was carried out through a multidisciplinary approach using mineralogical–chemical analyses and physical–mechanical tests for the characterization of six binders and twelve mortars. The aim was to verify the effects of CDW interactions on binders as well as the extent of their compositional influences on the final properties. The chemical and mineralogical results evidenced strong compositional differences among the CDWs, differently influencing the physical–mechanical performances (i.e., compressive strength, density, water absorption and porosity) of the mortar samples. Regardless of the types of precursors and CDWs used, a better influence of K-silicate than sodium on the synthetised samples was observed. Furthermore, the higher versatility of metakaolin mortars with any type of CDW used was noted. Contrary, fly ash and volcanic ash mortars showed better properties with CDWs based on their high silica content and volcanic minerals. The study highlighted the critical roles of the CDW composition and precursor selection in mortar production. It confirmed that CDWs can be recycled for geopolymeric synthesis through proper characterisation and binder selection. Optimising these parameters allows for the successful integration of CDWs into geopolymeric materials. This process supports the advancement of a circular economy in the construction industry

This issue is explored on the example of the Trieste-born author Claudio Magris, who cultivates a very close relationship with most of his translators.
Writing and translation have been coexisting in this author throughout his career and have resulted in the heightened sensitivity of Magris the author with regards to translation, as the first part of the analysis shows. The second part describes the dialogue between Magris and the translators of his works, and ends with the more general question of the significance and role of such a form of exchange

No full textThe purpose of this paper is to study the poetics of Claudio Rodríguez, delimiting its components and trying to clarify them and to present them as a whole. The author left some pages written on his conception of poetry that encourage reflection and, in some cases, interpretation. So with his conception of poetry as a gift and inebriation, as an alliance and condemnation or celebration (giving title to his collections of poems), or with notions such as «participation», «living contemplation», «living expression » or «personal rhythm» that make up his way of understanding the poetic process.El propósito de este artículo es estudiar la poética de Claudio Rodríguez, deslindando sus componentes y tratando de clarificarlos y presentarlos en su conjunto. Recent clinical trials of cancer immunogene therapy in companion animals
No full textThis mini-review presents the results of veterinary clinical trials on immunogene therapy published from 2014 to 2016. A variety of tumors, among them melanoma(canine and equine), mastocytoma (canine), mammary adenocarcinoma (canine) and fibrosarcoma (feline) were treated by using diverse strategies. Non-viral vectors were usually employed to transfer genes of cytokines, suicide enzymes and/or tumor associated antigens. In general terms, minor or no adverse collateral effects were related to these procedures, and treated patients frequently improved their conditions (better quality of life, delayed or suppressed recurrence or metastatic spread, increased survival). Some of these new methodologies have a promising future if applied as adjuvant treatments of standard approaches. The auspicious results, derived from immunogene therapy studies carried out in companion animals, warrant their imperative usage in veterinary clinical oncology. Cytokine-enhanced vaccine and suicide gene therapy as surgery adjuvant treatments for spontaneous canine melanoma: 9 years of follow-up
No full textWe present here the updated results after 9 years of the beginning of a trial on canine patients with malignant melanoma. This surgery adjuvant approach combined local suicide gene therapy with a subcutaneous vaccine composed by tumor cells extracts and xenogeneic cells producing human interleukin-2 and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor. Toxicity was absent or minimal in all patients (0less than or equal toVCOG-CTCAE gradeless than or equal to1). With respect to surgery-treated controls (ST), the complete surgery (CS) arm of this combined treatment (CT) significantly increased the fraction of local disease-free patients from 13 to 81% and distant metastases free from 32 to 84%. Even though less effective than the CS arm, the partial surgery (PS) arm of this CT was significantly better controlling the disease than only surgery (14% while PS-ST: 0%, P2848 days (81–2848 and 35–2848). Thus, more of 50% of our CT patients died of melanoma unrelated causes, transforming a lethal disease into a chronic one. Finally, surgery adjuvant CT delayed or prevented post-surgical recurrence and distant metastasis, significantly improved disease-free and overall survival maintaining the quality of life. Long-term safety and efficacy of this treatment are supported by the high number of CT patients (283) and extensive follow-up (>9 years). Gene therapy for canine cancer: clinical results
No full textDespite the important progress obtained in the treatment of some pets malignancies, new treatments need to be developed. In this review we discuss the bases and we summarize the outcomes of published gene therapy veterinary clinical trials reported by many research centers up to date. A variety of tumors such as canine soft tissue sarcomas, osteosarcoma and lymphoma were subjected to different approaches. However, spontaneous canine melanoma (a highly aggressive tumor resistant to current therapies) was the preferred target. Both viral and mainly non-viral vectors as well as cytokine producing transgenic cells were used to deliver gene products as cytokines, suicide enzymes, xenogeneic tumor antigens, anti-angiogenic molecules and pro-apoptotic regulatory factors. Among other examples, we are presenting our own successful experience with suicide plus immunogene therapy for spontaneous canine melanomas and sarcomas. In general terms, very slight or no adverse collateral effects were found during this kind of treatments and usually treated patients displayed a better course of the disease (longer survival, delayed or suppressed local or systemic relapse, recovery of the quality of life), suggesting the utility of this sort of methodology as standard adjuvant treatment. The encouraging outcomes obtained in companion animals support their ready application in veterinary clinical oncology and serve as preclinical proof of concept and safety assay for future human gene therapy trials.Fil: Glikin, Gerardo Claudio. Cytokine-enhanced vaccine and suicide gene therapy as adjuvant treatments of metastatic melanoma in a horse
No full textWe evaluated the safety, efficacy and anti-tumour effects of a surgery adjuvant treatment on an equine patient with metastatic malignant melanoma. This approach combined suicide gene therapy with a subcutaneous vaccine composed by formolized tumour cells and irradiated xenogeneic cells producing human interleukin-2 and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor. The post-surgical margins of the cavities were infiltrated with lipid-complexed thymidine kinase suicide gene co-administrated with ganciclovir. In addition, subcutaneous lesions periodically treated with the suicide gene system objectively reduced their sizes or disappeared. Without any symptom of toxicity, this combined treatment abolished local recurrence and further metastatic spread of the disease. Therefore, this surgery adjuvant combined treatment controlled tumour growth and delayed or prevented post-surgical recurrence and distant metastasis while recovered the patient’s quality of life.Fil: Finocchiaro, Liliana Maria Elena.
