Entrepreneurs in rural areas: Challenges and opportunities

    No full text
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia play an important role in supporting new economic model that focuses on innovation and creative industry. A review of the relevant small business literature, however, revealed that there are limited studies attempting to investigate the issue of entrepreneurs in rural areas. This article attempts to study the role, contribution problems, and constraints related to the rural entrepreneurs, which may affect their operations, survival, growth, stability, and profitability. Using questionnaire and structured interview, the data for this study was collected from 700 rural entrepreneurs who had attended training and development programs conducted by Cooperative and Entrepreneur Development Institute(CEDI) UUM from 2006 until 2008. Findings of the study indicate that rural entrepreneurs are motivated by necessity-driven factors and not opportunity-driven factor when starting up their business. Nevertheless, the common problems and constraints that are faced by rural entrepreneurs ranging from lack of access to capital support scheme up to the outdated business vision and value. The results of the study would help authority to improve rural entrepreneurs program conducted by government agencies and policy related to entrepreneurs

The aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between three key variables, namely image, satisfaction and loyalty in curative tourism industry in Jordan. The seven dimensions of the tourism destination image employed in this study are travel environment, national attraction, accessibility, infrastructure, relaxation aspect, outdoor activities and price and value. 202 tourists visiting the Dead Sea in Jordan were used as the sample. The study demonstrates that tourist satisfaction mediates the relationship between destination image and loyalty

Takaful or Islamic insurance is part of well-growth Islamic finance industry today. Many efforts have been done by the governtment and the industry player, however the Small participation from the society is always doubted. This research try to find what are the factors that people do not join takaful. The auther also want to find how far is the respondent understand about takaful and what are their perceptions about it, furhermore both aspects influenced their participation square. This research also discussed about the takaful history, its basic concepts, principles which applied and the differences with conventional insurance. To get the objectives, the author has selected a group of postgraduate students of a local university and distributed questionnaires. To analyze the collected data, author used descriptive analysis, percentages, frequencies, mean, standard deviation and chi. The results revealed that the prime factor of respondent do not join takaful because they do not have clear information about it. Respondent's understanding and their perception are significant with the participation in takaful but not so strong because majority of those who joined takaful probably not understand well and lead negative perception about it

The main purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between change management initiatives and job satisfaction among salespersons in direct selling industry of Malaysia.Job satisfaction is regarded as one of the proxies of change success in this industry’s context. Six hundred ninety structured questionnaires were distributed to salespersons throughout Malaysia and 244 were returned but only 238 were usable. The results show that out of the six initiatives namely shared change vision, communication, up line support, compensation systems, training and feedback, only shared change vision, training and up line support have shown positive influence on job satisfaction. This study adds to the literature by showing the importance of change management initiatives on change success in direct selling industry. It also provides some theoretical contributions to sales management practices in the competitive environment of direct selling industr

The main purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between up line support and both change success proxies namely sales performance and job satisfaction, among salespersons in direct selling industry of Malaysia. Six hundred ninety structured questionnaires were distributed to salespersons throughout Malaysia and 244 were returned but only 238 were usable. The results illustrate that up line support has shown positive influence on job satisfaction but not on sales performance. This study contributes a significant knowledge to direct selling industry since there is still a lack of studies that have been done on the relationship between up line support influences on change success in this particular industry. This study adds to the literature by showing the importance of up line support on change success in direct selling industry. It also provides some theoretical contributions to sales management practices in the competitive environment of direct selling industry

The postliberal politics of halal: new directions in the civilizing process?

    No full text
This paper examines the emergence of postliberal halal politics in European societies. Building on research undertaken during the EU funded Dialrel project, it examines how the Malaysian state is inserting hegemonic claims into transnational space in order to dominate the international halal market. Moving beyond the idea of horizontally aligned networks of transnational power as the dominant framework for understanding social and economic change, the paper explores the complex interweaving of the large-scale macro processes and everyday micro practices underpinning the rise of Malaysia’s postliberal halal strategy. It is argued that the processes of social and economic differentiation emerging as a result of these processes have the potential to be an important step in the global civilizing process. In conclusion, the paper discusses the implication of these developments for figurational sociology

Active sensing methods of ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC): Comparative study in frequency domain

    No full text
Ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMCs) are soft transducers that bend in response to low-voltage input, and generate voltage in response to deformations. Their potential applications include compliant locomotion systems, small-scale robotics, energy harvesting and biomedical instrumentation. The materials are inherently compliant, simple to shape, simple to miniaturize and simple to integrate into a system. Compared to actuation, IPMC sensing has not been intensively studied. The existing reports focus on the sensing phenomenon, but provide insufficient characterization for implementation purposes. This work aims to address this gap by studying and comparing the frequency responses and noise dynamics of different IPMC active sensing signals, i.e. voltage, charge and current. These characteristics are experimentally identified by mechanically exciting IPMC samples, and simultaneously measuring the respective signals and material deformations. The results provide a systematic comparison between different implementations of active sensing with IPMCs, and give insights into their strengths and limitations.Accepted Author ManuscriptMechatronic Systems Desig
