Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Male Infertility: Established Methodologies and Future Perspectives

    No full text
Male fertility can be affected by oxidative stress (OS), which occurs when an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the body’s ability to neutralize them arises. OS can damage cells and influence sperm production. High levels of lipid peroxidation have been linked to reduced sperm motility and decreased fertilization ability. This literature review discusses the most commonly used biomarkers to measure sperm damage caused by ROS, such as the high level of OS in seminal plasma as an indicator of imbalance in antioxidant activity. The investigated biomarkers include 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine acid (8-OHdG), a marker of DNA damage caused by ROS, and F2 isoprostanoids (8-isoprostanes) produced by lipid peroxidation. Furthermore, this review focuses on recent methodologies including the NGS polymorphisms and differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis, as well as the epigenetic mechanisms linked to ROS during spermatogenesis along with new methodologies developed to evaluate OS biomarkers. Finally, this review addresses a valuable insight into the mechanisms of male infertility provided by these advances and how they have led to new treatment possibilities. Overall, the use of biomarkers to evaluate OS in male infertility has supplied innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, enhancing our understanding of male infertility mechanisms

The open banking movement and the access to accounts rule: challenges for competition and data protection law

    No full text
The global development of open banking regulations and initiatives, while promising benefits to individuals and small businesses, raises also several concerns. This entry, focusing on the European Union experience, addresses some critical issues not only in respect to the defence of consumers' economic interests, but also, and mainly, with regard to the safeguard of customers’ personal data and the maintenance of an adequate level of competition in the relevant markets. The author advocates a revision of the existing protecting devices or, alternatively, the creation of new mechanisms, more suitable to ensure a high level of protection for the interests at stake

Synchronous interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma and B-cell small lymphocytic lymphoma in a lymph node

A gradually enlarging axillary mass in a 79-year-old man was excised. The specimen was processed for light microscopy, immunohistochemical studies, and electron microscopy; gene rearrangement studies were also performed. A diagnosis of an interdigitating dendritic cell tumor of the lymph node and a B-cell small lymphocytic lymphoma occurring in the same anatomic location was made. We found that although rare cases of interdigitating dendritic cell tumor with an associated secondary malignancy have been described in the literature, to our knowledge, this is the first report of interdigitating dendritic cell tumor and synchronous neoplasm diagnosed at the same site. A possible relationship between the 2 disorders is also discussed

NMR and computational data of two novel antimicrobial peptides

    No full text
AbstractHere we report details on the design and conformational analysis of two novel peptides showing antimicrobial properties, as reported in the research article, “New antimicrobial peptides against foodborne pathogens: from in silico design to experimental evidence” G. Palmieri, M. Balestrieri, Y.T.R. Proroga, L. Falcigno, A. Facchiano, A. Riccio, F. Capuano, R. Marrone, G. Campanile, A. Anastasio (2016) [1]. NMR data, such as chemical shifts in two different solvents as well as aCH protons deviations from random coil values and NOE patterns, are shown together with the statistics of structural calculations. Strategy and particulars of molecular design are presented

Consumer bankruptcy e debt mitigation: modelli a confronto

    No full text
A growing number of legal systems have decided to take measures to address the problems derived from the over-indebtedness of consumers, a common feature in contemporary credit society. This article provides an overview of the various models that have been developed over the last two decades by the national legislatures. In the same period, common law systems, where bankruptcy proceedings were traditionally available for non-commercial entities, felt the need to adjust the existing rules in order to prevent abuses. All the different provisions enacted to mitigate the debts incurred by consumers, or to allow them a fresh start, pose serious problems of compatibility with well-established principles of contract law. Their comparative analysis shows remarkable distinctions, especially between the civil law and common law approaches. The author focuses on these distinctions as well as on a peculiar phenomenon that has taken place due to the disparity of legal regimes in Europe, the so called insolvency tourism
