Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Rolling element bearings (REB) in helicopter gearboxes are essential components that enable the helicopter to fly. A failure of these components can result in severe consequences, such as the crash of the helicopter or ditching while undertaking offshore operations. In excess of 1000 incidents have been attributed to issues with the lubrication system. In the current era, helicopters are required to demonstrate a 30-minutes autorotation capability when confronted with an oil shortage. The objective of this work is to gain a deeper comprehension of the operational capabilities of a REB in the presence of an oil shortage. The ultimate goal is to enhance the run-dry requirement time in the future. In order to achieve this, this work does not consider a full REB, as this would be computationally intractable. Instead, the investigation is focused on a single contact between a rolling element and a raceway. This work represents the initial stage in the process of developing an understanding of the behaviour of a REB when it is subjected to an oil shortage. The next step would be to extrapolate the behaviour of one contact to the entire REB. Experimental studies on Loss of Lubricant (LoL) applications (i.e. oil shortages) have yielded two distinct outcomes: the stabilisation and non-stabilisation of the friction coefficient during multiple overrollings. A numerical model enabling the starvation of a Thermo-ElastoHydrodynamic Lubricated (TEHL) contact has been developed with the objective of reproducing the experimental results. An innovative method based on Moving Mesh (MM) is employed to introduce starvation. The numerical model has been validated against existing literature. A comparison with experimental works on oil shortage revealed successful replication of scenarios in which the contact operates for an extended duration without replenishment
The fluid that separates the contacting elements in many industrial applications is often a mixture of oil and operating fluids. This work aims to provide a better understanding of lubrication with mixtures in elastohydrodynamic contacts in order to anticipate appropriate lubrication system performance. The oil/refrigerant mixture and the oil/water mixture, representing respectively miscible fluids and immiscible fluids, are thoroughly investigated in this study. The essential questions differ depending on the characteristics of the mixtures. The main issue for oil/refrigerant solution is at the contact outlet, where the refrigerant may evaporate. An original cavitation modeling with thermal effects for oil/refrigerant solutions is reported in this work. A comparison with other cavitation models from the literature is made, highlighting the necessity of considering the refrigerant solubility in oil for such problems. Indeed oil/refrigerant mixtures may dramatically reduce the amount of liquid oil for the next contact compared to the case of pure oil cavitation. Besides this, the problem of water droplets in oil emulsion is addressed at the contact inlet to evaluate the risks of water droplet contamination. A micro-sized water-in-oil emulsion flow is directly observed at the EHL point contact inlet. In parallel, a numerical approach was developed to investigate the impacts of various operating parameters on the flow of water-in-oil emulsion. The results of this work give a possible explanation for the contradictory findings in the literature and reveal the critical conditions under which water-in-oil emulsion would influence the EHL contacts
This thesis explores the influence of thermally insulating Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coatings on both friction and film thickness in thermal-elastohydrodynamic (TEHL) contacts across a wide range of sliding conditions. Previous studies have primarily examined friction reduction due to DLC coatings under rolling-sliding conditions and found a negligible influence on film thickness. However, thermally insulating surfaces are suspected to reduce the beneficial viscosity wedge effect at high shear. This thesis investigates a large range of sliding conditions, such as the opposite sliding found in various mechanical components like the cam-finger follower contact. A dual experimental-numerical approach is employed. On one hand, experiments are carried out on a barrel-on-disk tribometer and a cam-follower-valve test rig. On the other hand, a quantitative EHL approach is proposed based on an independent rheological characterization of a commercial lubricant and realized using a finite element solver. The findings demonstrate the ability of the numerical model to reproduce both friction and film thickness measurements, particularly under opposite sliding conditions. Across a wide range of operating conditions examined in this study, the numerical model shows that the use of DLC coatings leads not only to a decrease in friction (about 30 % in some cases) but also in film thickness (up to 10 %). Furthermore, both numerical and experimental results indicate that applying a DLC coating to the cam-follower contact is beneficial in terms of friction reduction. Moreover, this study aims to quantify the decrease in film thickness at high sliding which is essential to anticipate the risk of asperity contact
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
It can be seen from longitudinal sections of a tire tread that road minerals are embedded inside the tire tread. The aim of this work is to study experimentally and numerically the process leading to this migration, for a reference experimental configuration. This work was structured around three main axes. The first was to propose a method for characterizing the rubber-like material, adapted to the numerical model used thereafter. To this end, a reverse analysis of an indentation test was carried out. The numerical model considers the material to be composed of a multitude of discrete and deformable bodies. The parameters to be identified are the stiffness and cohesion between each discrete body. The study showed that the obtained kinematics is close to what is observed experimentally. A convergence criterion for the reverse analysis was defined, based on hardness and residual depth. It was shown that for a constant ratio of cohesion over stiffness, stiffness only modifies hardness. Consequently, as cohesion modifies residual depth, the obtained solution is unique. A numerical model to study mineral migration was then developed. It consists in shearing a layer of minerals on the surface of a material mainly composed of rubber, modeled as a set of discrete and deformable bodies. Firstly, it was shown that the initial phenomena of mineral penetration into the rubber-like material are different from those observed over the longer time scales. In particular, three modes of penetration were defined: plowing, abrasion and fracture. These modes modify the rate at which minerals penetrate the material. When the minerals are sufficiently incorporated into the material, they form what is referred to as a mixed layer. Minerals migrate deeper and deeper, due to repeated contacts between mineral agglomerates, caused by their relative velocities (driven by the shear rate). In particular, it has been shown that these contacts lead to a stochastic evolution of the position of a mineral. If all the minerals are considered, the behavior becomes deterministic and follows an evolution close to what is expected for a diffusive process. This last point allows the use of diffusion tools, in particular the evaluation of a diffusion coefficient through transverse velocity fluctuation and persistence. It is thus shown that these two parameters are highly dependent on local plastic phenomena, which in the current model are driven by cohesion
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
