USER-DEFINED CONTENT IN A MODERN LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR ENGINEERING GRAPHICS
New pedagogic methods are developed during the current “knowledge-based era”. They replace the “taught lesson” by collaboration, reflection and iteration; in this context, the internet should not remain only a convenient and cheep (if not free) mechanism for delivering traditional materials online. As the amount of available information continues to enlarge and diversify, the skills needed to access and process this information become quickly outdated. The ability to use new technologies and a wide range of multimedia tools will define success. This paper outlines the important role played by the user-generated content in defining new pedagogical approaches to learning in the context of online communities. Graphical subjects, like “Computer Graphics” and “Computer Aided Design” require an active participation of the student. Students-led lessons and students generated content give consistency and aid value to the educational process. The term of “teaching” transforms in “studying”
On the Benthic Invertebrate Megafauna at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, in the Vicinity of the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone
Little is known about the fauna that inhabits non-chemosynthetic environments associated with mid-ocean ridges. This thesis investigates a ridge and fracture zone system to assess its influence as a barrier to faunal dispersal, and as a unique bathyal habitat. It also describes the ecology of megabenthic communities inhabiting a ridge. Sites were chosen on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the vicinity of the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone, at a target depth of 2,500 m. Four superstations were chosen north and south of the Fracture Zone, on either side of the ridge. Different productivity levels and hydrographic features were characteristic for the northern and southern sites. In order to characterise the benthic megafauna 50 ha were trawled and 32,000 m2 of seafloor were sampled with HD video footage, targeting both flat and 10 ? sloped habitats. Holothurians were the most abundant megafauna. In order to assess their evolutionary relationship 43 holothurian specimens were genetically studied by modelling five of their genes (16S, 18S, 28S, COI, H3) in a phylogenetic analysis. All four sites exhibited noticeably different faunal characteristics. The biomass was highest at the SE, and lowest at the NW site. Body sizes differed between sites for most taxa, that were sufficient in numbers to be compared between sites, most likely as a result of different adaptations to food supply. Differences in species richness were observed between the sampling methods, with the highest richness at the SE site in trawl samples, and highest at the NW and SW sites in the video survey. Species densities were highest at the northern sites with both methods. Differences in diversity were also observed, with trawl samples providing a higher taxonomic resolution than the video survey and showing highest diversity at the SE site and lowest at the NE site. Community composition was significantly different between sites. Variations in the composition of megabenthic assemblages were observed between flat and 10 ? sloped habitats, although the effect of slope appears to be site dependent. The genetic analyses revealed a close relationship between individuals from different families. The extent to which the Ridge acts as a faunal barrier was unclear as the southern sites lacked an obvious difference in community composition. Faunal differences to the north and south of the Fracture Zone, however, suggest that this feature is a barrier to dispersal. The contrasting megafaunal assemblages of the sites probably reflect a combination of environmental drivers including sediment type, phytodetrital quality, hydrography, and habitat complexity
Integrating News Article Metadata into Topic Models
Topic models are used to find underlying topics in a set of documents. Integrating metadata into topic models can improve their performance. We introduce models that extend latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) to include author and category metadata information and a model which integrates taxonomy metadata into the Pachinko Allocation Model (PAM). The author-topic and category-topic models are based on the author-topic model with modifications, and the taxonomy-topic model is based on PAM. To make the PAM include the metadata information, a novel topic locking mechanism is created. The results show that for a news article dataset, our taxonomy-topic model integrates the metadata well and improves the elapsed time in comparison to the original PAM. The taxonomy-topic model has a higher topic coherence and more understandable topics than LDA. Our results show that integrating metadata can improve topic modeling in various ways

Application of Two Methods for Notch Fatigue Life Prediction
The aim of this paper is the application of two methods for notch fatigue life assessment, methods which are based on finite element analysis: the theory of critical distances and the volumetric method. Firstly, un-notched and notched specimens (for three different geometries) were tested in tension under constant-amplitude loading. The use of theory of critical distances (TCD) to predict the notch fatigue life involves the determination of the material characteristic length L based on experimental results obtained for the un-notched and one type of notched specimens. For the others notched geometries, based on linear-elastic finite element analysis, the fatigue strength is predicted using the TCD. In order to apply the volumetric method, elastic-plastic stress field around notches are considered and notch strength reduction factor are determined. Finally, the predictions of the two methods were compared with experimental fatigue data for notched specimens.</jats:p
Identitätskonstruktionen in der jungen jüdischen Gegenwartsliteratur
Anhand von gesellschaftspolitischen, demographischen und kulturellen Entwicklungen werden in Anlehnung an Michel Foucault die konstituierenden Regeln eines innerjüdischen Diskurses beschrieben, welcher vor zwei Jahrzehnten in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und der DDR entstanden ist. Innerhalb dieses Diskurses wird die junge jüdische Gegenwartsliteratur verortet, die durch signifikante Korrespondenzen zur gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit gekennzeichnet ist. Mithilfe einer methodenpluralistischen Vorgehensweise, die neben literatur-wissenschaftlichen Ansätzen auch solche der geschichtsphilosophischen, sozio-psychologischen, kunst- und kulturhistorischen Forschung einbezieht, wird die Konstruktion junger jüdischer Identität in ausgewählten Texten exemplarisch untersucht. Wiederkehrende Konstanten der Identitätskonstruktionen werden genauso herausgearbeitet wie Divergenzen der ästhetischen Verfahren, durch die subversive, oftmals geschlechtsspezifisch konnotierte Deutungsebenen eröffnet werden. Dem übergeordneten Interesse der Arbeit folgend, werden die Ergebnisse der Textanalysen innerhalb des diskursiven Aussagekontextes betrachtet.Following Michel Foucault, the author uses socio-political, demographic, and cultural developments to define a set of rules organizing the inner-Jewish discourse that emerged approximately two decades ago in the Federal Republic of Germany and the former GDR. Within that discourse, the author locates a body of contemporary German-Jewish literature characterized by strong resemblances to socio-historical reality. The dissertation examines the construction of contemporary Jewish identity within selected works of literature, using a variety of methodological approaches from the fields of literary criticism, history of art, culture and philosophy as well as socio-psychology. Recurring identity traits within those constructions are emphasized as well as differences in the aesthetic scheme which often bear subversive, gender specific connotations. Consistent with the overall aim of the dissertation, the results of the literary analyses are transferred to the discursive level
