On the Feminisation of Job and Title Names in Poland and Their Emotive Reception
No full textThe article examines the problem of the feminisation of the names of professions and titles in Poland and their emotive reception. Gender-sensitive designations are already in use in the public sphere and especially in some circles that are less conservative. Nevertheless, the lack of official feminisation guidelines, if we do not take into account a 2019 opinion of the Polish Language Council, could contribute to a rejection of feminised terms by some users of the Polish language. This phenomenon is visible on social media in the emotional comments and in using devaluing vocabulary. The conclusions of our preliminary research are based on an analysis of comments posted in 2022 under the posts of Facebook campaign #wspieramfeminatywy, elaborated by the French banking group Parisbas in Poland. The authors submit to analysis the arguments of the detractors of feminisation by comparing them to those attested in the French-speaking world.L’article se penche sur le problème de la féminisation des noms de métiers et de titres en Pologne et sur la réception émotionnelle de certains termes. Les appellations prenant en compte le genre circulent déjà dans l’espace public et surtout dans certains milieux les moins conservateurs. Néanmoins, le manque de régulations officielles de cette féminisation, à l’exception d’un avis du Conseil de la langue polonaise de 2019, pourrait contribuer au rejet, chez certains usagers de la langue polonaise, des termes féminisés. Ce phénomène est visible sur les réseaux sociaux dans les commentaires émotionnels qui recourent à un lexique dévalorisant. Les conclusions de notre recherche préliminaire sont le fruit de l’analyse d’un corpus des commentaires postés en 2022 sous la campagne Facebook #wspieramfeminatywy lancée par le groupe bancaire français BNP Paribas en Pologne. Les verbes néologiques à valeur négative et positive : analyse formelle et pragmatique
No full textThis article examines neological verbs from a discursive perspective. The lexical items under analysis were collected from extensive press corpora, with the support of platforms such as Néoveille and Sketch Engine. These tools not only facilitated the identification of new verbal units but also enabled their placement within a broader linguistic and socio-political context. Through formal and pragmatic analysis, the study explores the relationship between a verb’s meaning and the circumstances of its enunciation. The verbs are thus categorised according to the positive or negative connotations they acquire in specific contexts and through the illocutionary force they convey. This discursive approach provides insight into the dynamics of verbal neologisation as a response to social change, political discourse, and current world events, highlighting the key role these phenomena play in shaping contemporary language use.Le présent article examine les verbes néologiques dans une perspective discursive. Les unités lexicales analysées ont été recueillies à partir de grands corpus de presse, avec le soutien de plateformes telles que Néoveille et Sketch Engine. Ces outils ont non seulement permis d’identifier de nouvelles unités verbales, mais aussi de les ancrer dans un contexte linguistique et socio-politique plus large. À travers une analyse formelle et pragmatique, l’étude explore le lien entre la valeur sémantique d’un verbe et les circonstances de son énonciation. Les verbes sont ainsi classés en fonction des connotations positives ou négatives qu’ils acquièrent selon les contextes, et de la force illocutoire qu’ils véhiculent. Cette approche discursive offre un éclairage sur la dynamique de la création néologique verbale en tant que réponse aux mutations sociales, aux discours politiques et aux évènements mondiaux actuels, soulignant le rôle clé de ces phénomènes dans l’évolution de l’usage linguistique contemporain
An Introduction to Logic for Students of Physics and Engineering
No full textA physicist with an engineering background, the author presents a brief tutorial on logic. In his work at NASA and in his encounters with students, he has often found that a firm grounding in basic logic is lacking - perhaps because there are so many other demands on people that time simply cannot be taken to really examine the roots of human reasoning. This report provides an overview of this all-too-important subject with the dual hope that it will suffice insofar as it goes and that it will spur at least some to further study
