In this Presidential Address, the author takes the reader on a reconnaissance of his life and time as a regional scientist. He points out scenery he found scintillating along the way, hoping that some may pick up the banner and chew on a few of the ideas for a while. He suggests a revisit to Albert O. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Biological macromolecule binding and anticancer activity of synthetic alkyne-containing l-phenylalanine derivatives
Herein, we described the synthesis of two l-phenylalanines α-derivatized with a terminal alkyne moiety whose structures differed by phenyl ring halogen substitution (two o-Cl in 1 vs. one p-Br in 2) and investigated their effect on biological macromolecules and living cells. We explored their interaction with quadruplex DNA (G4 DNA), using tel26 and c-myc as models, and bovine serum albumin (BSA). By CD spectroscopy, we found that 1 caused minor tel26 secondary structure changes, leading also to a slight thermal stabilization of this hybrid antiparallel/parallel G4 structure, while the c-myc parallel topology remained essentially unchanged upon 1 binding. Other CD evidences showed the ability of 1 to bind BSA, while molecular docking studies suggested that the same molecule could be housed into the hydrophobic cavity between sub-domains IIA, IIB, and IIIA of the protein. Furthermore, preliminary aggregation studies, based on concentration-dependent spectroscopic experiments, suggested the ability of 1 to aggregate forming noncovalent polymeric systems in aqueous solution. Differently from 1, the bromine-modified compound was able to bind Cu(II) ion, likely with the formation of a CuL2 complex, as found by UV spectroscopy. Finally, cell tests excluded any cytotoxic effect of both compounds toward normal cells, but showed slight antiproliferative effects of 2 on PC3 cancerous cells at 24 h, and of 1 on both T98G and MDA-MB-231 cancer cells at 48 h
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods

T. Christie's Victorian medals to the Ontario Agricultural College. An alumnus continues his 1931 story as a stowaway. The English column addresses the use of proper English and the origin of the Little Theatre Movement. While the literary column provides book reviews, an account of the Canadian Author Lecture by H. Napier Moore, and the composition of epitaphs. The athletics column reports on the results of the competitions in basketball, swimming, hockey, boxing, wrestling, and fencing. In the Macdonald Institute column a student describes the O. A. C. campus to foreign students, there are also accounts of the "Feminine Section of O. A. C., and a tally of the food consumed in the dinning hall. The highlight of the campus news column is the Conversazione of 1938 and the social events of the season. The O. V. C. column provides updates of the joint social events between the colleges on campus. Previous issue date: 2015-03-26This dissertation analises the work of the austrian director Michael Haneke, placing it as
a cinematographic representation of the liquid discomfort. To do so, first, it makes a
historical and social survey about the elements that compose the liquid discomfort.
Then, it studies is forming concepts, through the work of Jean Braudillard and, mainly,
through the liquid theory of Zygmunt Bauman, characterizing the liquid discomfort from
those theories. From that point, it brings Haneke as an author, to allow the use of his
cinematography in terms of filmic representation of the liquid discomfort. As a
methodological model of analysis, it bases in Aumont and Dubois to create an hybrid
method of a more fluid and essay-like way: the narrative analysis. Supported in this
progression, it analyses Haneke's first two feature films comercially distributed in
screening rooms, The seventh continent (1989), and Benny?s video (1992), with the
intent of showing its hipothesis.Esta disserta??o analisa a obra do diretor austr?aco Michael Haneke, posicionando-a
como uma representa??o cinematogr?fica do mal-estar l?quido. Para isso, em um
primeiro momento, faz um levantamento hist?rico e social a respeito dos elementos que
comp?em o mal-estar l?quido. Posteriormente, estuda seus conceitos formadores,
atrav?s do trabalho de Jean Baudrillard e, principalmente, da teoria l?quida de Zygmunt
Bauman, caracterizando o mal-estar l?quido a partir dessas teorias. Em seguida, traz a
figura de Haneke como autor, para possibilitar a utiliza??o de sua cinematografia em
termos de representa??o filmogr?fica do mal-estar l?quido. Como um modelo

Self-archiving practice and the influence of publisher policies in the social sciences
Authors in different disciplines exhibit very different behaviours on the so-called ‘green’ road to open access, i.e. self-archiving. This study looks at the self-archiving behaviour of authors publishing in leading journals in six social science disciplines. It tests the hypothesis that authors are self-archiving according to the norms of their respective disciplines rather than following self-archiving policies of publishers, and that, as a result, they are self-archiving significant numbers of publisher PDF versions. It finds significant levels of
self-archiving, as well as significant self-archiving of
the publisher PDF version, in all the disciplines
investigated. Publishers’ self-archiving policies have
no influence on author self-archiving practice

On the system of numeration in Efik
This paper is a response to Olderroge 1984 that Efik does not have a system of number beyond one thousand, since according to the claim, the word for thousand in Efik is tosin, a recent borrowing from English and assimilated phonologically to synchronize with Efik. We dispute this position and argue that Efik can count up to 999,999 internally, and that borrowing is not meant to enrich the internal resourcefulness of the language in this case, but merely for ease of pronunciation. In this paper, we examine the structure of the system of cardinal numbers and the processes of forming complex numbers in Efik. Complex numbers are formed from addition, subtraction or multiplication of the basic units which are 1-5, 10, 15 and 20 or from a combination of addition and multiplication and/or subtraction. Ye is the particle for addition, -suk is the subtraction marker and multiplication is indicated by a zero allomorph. The general pattern of numeration in Efik is iterative. Our assumption is that the analysis of the number system in Efik has some linguistic implications as it triggers certain grammatical phenomena in the language.Cet article est une réponse à Olderroge (1984) qui prétend que la langue éfik ne dispose pas de numéros au-delà de mille, conclusion basée sur le mot tosin (‘mille’), un prêt récent de l’anglais qui est assimilé phonologiquement a l’éfik. Nous disputons cette conclusion et montrons que l’éfik peut compter à 999,999 et que ce prêt de l’anglais est employé pour son aise de prononciation et non pas pour suppléer les ressources internes de la langue. Cet article examine le système en éfik de numéros cardinaux et du procès de former les numéros complexes. Les numéros complexes sont formés par l’addition, la soustraction, ou la multiplication des unités de base qui sont 1 à 5, 10, 15, et 20 et une combinaison d’addition, de soustraction, ou de multiplication. Ye est le particle employé dans l’addition, -suk est le marqueur de la soustraction, et la multiplication est indiquée par un allomorph zéro. Le modèle de numération en éfik est iteratif. Following electron impact excitation of single (N, O, F, Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si) atom L subshells ionization cross section calculations by using Lotz’s equation
32nd International Physics Congress of Turkish-Physical-Society (TPS) -- SEP 06-09, 2016 -- Bodrum, TURKEYL shell and L subshells ionization cross sections sigma(L) and sigma(Li) (i = 1, 2, 3) following electron impact on (N,O, F, Ne Na, Mg, Al, Si) atoms calculated. By using Lotz' equation for nonrelativistic cases in Matlab sigma(L) and sigma(Li) cross section values obtained for ten electron impact(E-o) values in the range of E-Li< 10E(Li)(but only for Na 8E(Li);) for each atom. Starting from E-o=E-Li(each subshell ionization threshold energy), sigma(L) and sigma(Li) are increasing rapidly with E-o. For a fixed E-o value(approximate to 3.E-Li), while Z value increases from 7 <= Z<14 sigma(L) and sigma(Li) decrease. Results show that for smaller values of E-o(close to E-Li), x-ray yields formation of L-i(i=1,2,3) subshells decreases while competing other yields are increase.
