    Measuring industry-science links through inventor-author relations: A profiling method

    In this pilot study we examine the performance of text-based profiling in recovering a set of validated inventor-author links. In a first step we match patents and publications solely based on their similarity in content. Next, we compare inventor and author names on the highest ranked matches for the occurrence of name matches. Finally, we compare these candidate matches with the names listed in a validated set of inventor-author names. Our text-based profile methodology performs significantly better than a random matching of patents and publications, suggesting that text-based profiling is a valuable complementary tool to the name searches used in previous studies.innovation; industry-science links; text-based profiling;

    Effects of light fields during inflation

    In the inflationary universe, there can be light fields other than the inflaton. We explore a possibility that such light fields source the primordial perturbations, while minimally affecting the inflaton dynamics. We show that during inflation, fluctuations of the light fields can be converted to adiabatic curvature perturbations, which accumulate and become significant by the end of the inflationary era. An additional goal of this work is to distinguish between light fields which can/cannot be ignored during inflation. Such criteria become useful for examining cosmological scenarios with multiple fields. As concrete examples, our results are applied to D-brane inflation models. We consider effects from KK modes (oscillation modes) of wrapped branes in monodromy-driven large-field models, and angular directions of throat geometries in warped D-brane inflation. © 2010 The American Physical Society

    Particles and Fields in Superfluids: Insights from the Two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii Equation

    We study the dynamics of active particles in two-dimensional superfluids at temperature T=0T=0, for a variety of initial configurations, by carrying out extensive direct-numerical-simulations of the two-dimensional, Galerkin-truncated Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our study elucidates the interplay of particles and fields, in both simple and turbulent flows. We show that particle collisions can be inelastic, if the repulsive interactions between particles is weak, and elastic otherwise. We show that assemblies of many particles and vortices yield turbulent spatiotemporal evolutions

    England Calling: A Narratological Exploration of Martin Amis’s 'London Fields'

    This paper will explore connections between fictional narrative methodology and contemporary conceptions of Englishness by applying aspects of Gerald Prince’s (2005) conceptions of a ‘postcolonial narratology’ to Martin Amis’s “London Fields” (1989). Amis has commented that ‘it’s almost an act of will on my part trying not to be an English writer’. However, this paper will suggest that the novel under consideration here exhibits methodological tendencies which have their roots in a protracted engagement with problematic notions of English identity (principally, instability and disengagement) and that postcolonial approaches to narrative technique can lead to very interesting results, even when applied to the work of writers not typically identified with such constituencies. The central point of investigation will be the novel’s exhibition of metafictional tendencies. In “London Fields”, Amis narrates via an authorial surrogate, Samson Young, who purports to be the author of the text, yet becomes implicated in the events of the novel to the point where his actions, rather than his imagination, determine its outcome. It is interesting also in this connection that the novel is voiced by an ‘outsider’ to England, an American. Prince is intrigued by the possibility that a postcolonial narrative discourse might emerge ‘free of any narratorial introduction, mediation, or patronage.’ He also points to the significance of narratological features such as hybridity, migrancy, otherness, fragmentation, diversity and power relations. Amis’s novel exhibits all of these features, and takes the ambition of authorial invisibility to a paradoxical extreme. Voices, characters, reliability and even actantial events are brusquely ‘disowned’ by the author, resulting in a textual instability and uncertainty which, it will be demonstrated through close textual analysis, is intimately linked to England’s postcolonial condition

    Human frontal eye fields and spatial priming of pop-out

    "Priming of pop-out" is a form of implicit memory that facilitates detection of a recently inspected search target. Repeated presentation of a target's features or its spatial position improves detection speed (feature/spatial priming). This study investigated a role for the human frontal eye fields (FEFs) in the priming of color pop-out. To test the hypothesis that the FEFs play a role in short-term memory storage, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied during the intertrial interval. There was no effect of TMS on either spatial or feature priming. To test whether the FEFs are important when a saccade is being programmed to a repeated target color or location, TMS was applied during the search array. TMS over the left but not the right FEFs abolished spatial priming, but had no effect on feature priming. These findings demonstrate functional specialization of the left FEFs for spatial priming, and distinguish this role from target discrimination and saccade-related processes. The results suggest that the left FEFs integrate a spatial memory signal with an evolving saccade program, which facilitates saccades to a recently inspected location

In this text, we propose a unified framework for studying them: the class of pseudo TT-closed fields, where TT is an enriched theory of fields. These fields verify a "local-global" principle for the existence of points on varieties with respect to models of TT. This approach also enables a good description of some fields equipped with multiple VV-topologies, particularly pseudo algebraically closed fields with a finite number of valuations. One important result is a (model theoretic) classification result for bounded pseudo TT-closed fields, in particular we show that under specific hypotheses on TT, these fields are NTP2_2 of finite burden
