The gender issue is an emerging topic in occupational medicine, although still not sufficiently explored in the medical literature nor addressed by an appropriate Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) legislation. The "classic mono-causal occupational disease" is nearly disappeared, replaced by the more and more frequent multi-factorial so-called "work-related diseases". These can be caused by a variable combination both of occupational and non-occupational factors. This change in the occupational diseases scenario requires a new multidisciplinary approach to the workplace prevention strategy, involving all different aspects of science, technology and policy. The adoption of gender as a new category of scientific investigation implies a novel holistic approach to research, based on the contamination and partially integration of the epistemological statutes and research methodologies of different scientific disciplines, also in order to support policy with more practical and effective instruments and knowledge. On the other hand, more efforts should be made to integrate public health care, OH&S policy with social welfare. Here the authors discuss about the implementation of the "gender-parameter" in some aspects of the OH&S Italian legislation, recently introduced by the 81/08 law, and briefly report on the state of the art of occupational medical literature with regard to gender differences. © FrancoAngeli
Salute, sicurezza sul lavoro e differenze di genere: necessità di una adeguata valutazione dei rischi [Occupational health and safety and gender differences: Need for the identification of an adequate risk assessment ]
Recent legislation has made mandatory to perform the risk assessment taking into account gender differences. This should imply to consider not only the simple differences due to biologic difference between male and female workers, but also what is more related to the social role they really play in the current society. This second aspect of gender difference has not yet been addressed from a technical point of view. The University of Pisa in cooperation with INAIL has recently started a project aimed at identifying technical tools to perform a risk assessment which took into account gender difference
Supporting tools for companies addressed to integrate gender perspective in health at work
In recent European Policy concerning health and safety at
work, gender, together with age, geographical origin and
contractual condition, become an important aspect to be
considered in order to ensure for all workers a well-being at
work, which must be jointly targeted by all of those involved.
In particular, the gender perspective should imply to consider
not only biological differences between male and female
workers, but also the social role they really play in the current
society.
Description of the problem
The University of Pisa, through Italian Workers’
Compensation Authority (INAIL), has carried out a scientific
research with the aim of giving prevention tools in the ‘‘gender
based risk assessment’’ field. The methodology was based on a
multidisciplinary approach (study group composed of occupational
hygienists, occupational physicians and sociologists)
with the common goal of supporting employers and the
companies in assessing occupational risks in a gender
perspective.
Results
The research path has allowed us to develop processes and
tools, easy to use and useful for assessing the degree of
integration of gender in the risk management and prepare the
document for risk assessment accordingly. To facilitate the
drafting, a tool for self-evaluation of the risk assessment
document in a gender perspective was designed and some
maps of the area and risk fact sheets that summarize the
current scientific knowledge in relation to gender were
produced. These tools are being evaluated in a voluntary
trial and then they will be available on the website for INAIL
companies.
Lessons
The risk assessment must take into account all the factors, both
bio-physiological and cultural, that can interact with certain
agents or hazardous conditions and with risk perception itself.
Only by considering all these aspects in a multidimensional
way it will be possible to take preventive measures and
appropriate protection for risk management in a gender
perspective.
Key message
For the health and safety of all workers it’s important to
assess the occupational risks according to a gender
approach, taking into account all the peculiarities that
characterize both men and women

Health and safety at work, a matter of gender too
Objectives
In Italian laws concerning health and safety at work, mainly Legislative Decree no. 81/2008, gender, age,
geographical origin and contractual condition, become important aspects to be considered in order to
ensure "uniformity of protection for female and male workers throughout the country through the respect
of the essential levels of benefits relating to civil and social rights. "
The Italian Workers' Compensation Authority (INAIL), throught its Central Guarantee Committee for
equal opportunities, enhancement of worker well-being and against-discriminations (CUG), has carried
out a scientific research with the aim of giving prevention tools in the "gender based risk assessment"
field.
The methodology was based on a multidisciplinary approach, in order to give a better understanding of
laws and policies of the European Union, starting from "Community strategy 2007-2012 for health and
safety at work."
The present work illustrates the path made by INAIL, starting with a pilot project, in the implementation
stage - launched by CUG among INAIL Toscana Regional Head Office, in collaboration with the University
of Pisa – in order to outline and release guidelines for gender mainstreaming in the current Occupational
Health and Safety Management Systems (in Italian SGSSL).
Methods
The gender perspective integration into the OHSMS SGSL and the excellence distinguishing mark of the
company / organization require an Occupational Health and Safety Management System that evolves in
terms of ability to produce health and reduce risks for women and men, having regard to their
peculiarities.
And that is why a path which starts from the self-assessment (based on effectiveness, appropriateness
and gender equity) of organization SGSL was devised and proposed. It leads the employer toward the
drafting of the risk assessment document in a gender perspective, to finally reach the gender integration
of SGSL.
Results
The path enabled to reach the development of procedures and tools, "easy to use" - currently available,
or in the release phase, on the INAIL website - useful for assessing the integration gender degree in
corporate management and enabled to draw up the integrated risk assessment document in a gender
perspective. In order to facilitate the drafting, risk maps and risk fact sheets are available, which
summarize the current scientific knowledge with reference to gender.
Conclusions
The risk assessment must take into account all the factors, at both bio-physiological and cultural side,
that can interact with certain agents or hazardous conditions and with perception itself of risk. Only by
considering all these aspects in a multidimensional way it will be possible to take preventive measures
and appropriate protection for risk management in a gender perspective.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
