Es muss, so schreibt er, ein Bewusstsein über Ziele und Werte hergestellt werden, um den gegenwärtigen und bevorstehenden Transformationsprozessen etwas entgegen setzen zu können. Ausgehend vom Design Methods Movement der 1960er Jahre untersucht Jesko Feszer in seinem Beitrag, wie sich aus einer ersten größeren Diskussion um Entwurfsmethodiken in den Planungs- und Designdisziplinen ein zunehmendes Bewusstsein um die Situiertheit von Wissen auch in der Gestaltung entwickelte. Werteneutralität, rationale Wissenschaftlichkeit und absolute Objektivität, auf die sich Architektur und Design in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts beriefen und die zugleich ihre gesellschaftliche Erziehungsfunktion legitimierten, erwiesen sich im Verlauf der 1960er und frühen 1970er Jahre als zunehmend problematisch. Verschiedene Protagonist:innen des Design Methods Movement begannen, die frühen, noch dem Leitbild der exakten Wissenschaften folgenden Entwurfsmethodiken einer Revision zu unterziehen. Einzelne Architekt:innen und Bewegungen wie die Anwaltsplanung setzten sich zudem mit den gesellschaftspolitischen Voraussetzungen wie Folgen von Gestaltung auseinander. Und sie bezogen diejenigen, für die sie planten und entwarfen, aktiv in die entsprechenden Prozesse mit ein. Daraus ergibt sich als aktuelles Plädoyer, anti-neutral, situiert, parteiisch und konfliktorientiert zu gestalten.

Starting with the Design Methods Movement of the 1960s, Jesko Fezer examines how an initial major discussion about design methodologies in the planning and design disciplines led to a growing awareness of the situatedness of knowledge in design. Value neutrality, rational academic method, and absolute objectivity—principles that architecture and design invoked in the first half of the 20th century and which simultaneously legitimized their social and educational function—proved increasingly problematic in the 1960s and early 1970s. Various protagonists of the Design Methods Movement began to rework early design methodologies that still followed the model of the exact sciences. Certain architects and movements, such as advocacy planning, also addressed the socio-political prerequisites and consequences of design and actively involved those for whom they were planning and designing in the relevant processes. This has led to a contemporary plea for anti-neutral, situational, partisan, and conflict-oriented design
