Factors affecting evaporation of water from cattle bedding materials

    No full text
In livestock farming, maintaining dry bedding is considered to be important for maximising animal performance and welfare. A better understanding of the mechanisms that regulate drying has the potential to improve bedding management and reduce production costs. A custom laboratory-scale method was developed to explore the effects of environmental conditions and bedding characteristics on drying rate (DR). Samples (n = 256) of different types of bedding materials were exposed to controlled environmental conditions by using a climate chamber equipped with a custom cabinet capable of simulating different levels of air velocity and bedding temperature. The effects of the type of material, bedding moisture content, bedding temperature, air temperature, air relative humidity (RH) and air velocity were evaluated in a full factorial experimental design. Under the experimental conditions tested, DR ranged from 0.28 to 6.04 kg m−2 d−1, with an average of 2.03 kg m−2 d−1. All variables significantly affected DR, but large variation in the magnitude of effects was found. Bedding moisture content, air velocity and air RH had considerably larger effects than the other variables, together accounting for more than 70% of the variance in DR. The DR from bedding samples increased with bedding moisture content and air velocity but decreased with increasing air RH. The results of the current study may have important implications in the design and management of bedded pack barns. To increase the DR and keep bedding dry, producers should focus primarily on providing adequate barn ventilation (both in terms of air velocity and air exchange), whereas maintaining a high pack temperature may yield poorer-than-expected results

    A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1

    No full text
Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1

The L-p-to-L-q boundedness of commutators with applications to the Jacobian operator

    No full text
Supplying the missing necessary conditions, we complete the characterisation of the L-p -> L-q boundedness of commutators [b, T] of pointwise multiplication and Calderon-Zygmund operators, for arbitrary pairs of 1 q, our results are new even for special classical operators with smooth kernels. As an application, we show that every f is an element of L-p(R-d) can be represented as a convergent series of normalised Jacobians J(u) = det del uof u is an element of (over dot(W))(1,dp)(R-d)(d). This extends, from p = 1 to p > 1, a result of Coifman, Lions, Meyer and Semmes about J:. (over dot(W))(1,d)(R-d)(d) -> H-1(R-d), and supports a conjecture of Iwaniec about the solvability of the equation Ju = f is an element of L-p(R-d). (C) 2021 The Author(s). Markov Constraints for Generating Lyrics with Style

    No full text
We address the issue of generating texts in the style of an existing author, that also satisfy structural constraints imposed by the genre of the text. We focus on song lyrics, for which structural constraints are well-defined: rhyme and meter. Although Markov processes are known to be suitable for representing style, they are difficult to control in order to satisfy non-local properties, such as structural constraints, that require long distance modeling. We show that the framework of Constrained Markov Processes allows us to precisely generate texts that are consistent with a corpus, while being controllable in terms of rhymes and meter, a result that no other technique, to our knowledge, could achieve to date. Controlled Markov processes consist in reformulating Markov processes in the context of constraint satisfaction. We describe how to represent stylistic and structural properties in terms of constraints in this framework and we provide an evaluation of our method by comparing it to both pure Markov and pure constraint-based approaches. We show how this approach can be used for the semi-automatic generation of lyrics in the style of a popular author that has the same structure as an existing son

On p-Dunford integrable functions with values in Banach spaces

[EN] Let (Omega, Sigma, mu) be a complete probability space, X a Banach space and 1 X. Special attention is paid to the compactness of the Dunford operator of f. We also study the p-Bochner integrability of the composition u o f: Omega->Y , where u is a p-summing operator from X to another Banach space Y . Finally, we also provide some tests of p-Dunford integrability by using w*-thick subsets of X¿.Research partially supported by Ministerio de Economia, Industria y Competitividad and FEDER under projects MTM2014-53009-P (J.M. There is some evidence that acquired or hereditary prothrombotic disorders are risk factors for LST. The aim of this work was to evaluate the role of thrombotic screening, anticoagulant therapy or prophylaxis in patients with either acute or chronic otitis media and LST. The medical records of five children hospitalized at Pediatric Hospital Bambino Gesu of Rome because of acute or chronic otitis media complicated by mastoiditis and LST were reviewed. All children underwent laboratory workup for hypercoagulability. All the five children were found to be heterozygote for the C677T MTHFR mutation and a child presented also heterozygosity for factor V Leiden mutation. They have been successfully treated with anticoagulant therapy without sequels. Children with acute or chronic otitis media may have a prothrombotic tendency that becomes clinically evident because of the inflammatory state. Patients with a family and/or personal history of thrombosis and/or thrombophilic conditions need anticoagulant prophylaxis also in the absence of clear signs of LST. Treatment with low molecular weight is successful in patients with LST. Blood Coagul Fibrinolysis 23:158-163 (C) 2012 Wolters Kluwer Health vertical bar Lippincott Williams & Wilkins

Relationships among visual scores with feedlot performance and feed efficiency in Bos indicus cattle.

    No full text
Visual evaluation of live beef cattle have been largely used to identify more adequate animals for meat production and, in Brazil, even as selection criteria in breeding programs. However, the relationship of these evaluations with feed efficiency traits in feedlot are unknown. The objective of this work was to evaluate phenotypic correlations of visual scores of conformation (C), precocity (P) and muscularity (M) with feedlot performance.

The author introduces the notion of bounded pp-variation in the sense of LpL_p-norm. Precisely: Let fLp[0,2π]f \in L_p[0,2\pi] with 1<p<1<p<\infty. Let P:0=t0<t1<<tn=2πP: 0=t_0 <t_1< \cdots <t_n=2\pi be a partion of [0,2π][0,2\pi] if Vpm(f,T)=sup{k=1nTf(x+tk)f(x+tk1)p)tktk1p1}<,V_p^m(f,T) = \sup \{\sum_{k=1} ^{n}\int_T\frac{|f(x+t_k)-f(x+t_{k-1})|^p)}{|t_k-t_{k-1}|^{p-1}}\}< \infty, where the supremum is taken over all partitions PP of [0,2π][0,2\pi] and T=R/2πZT=\mathbb{R}/2\pi \mathbb{Z}, then ff is said to be of bounded pp-variation in the mean. The author obtains a Riesz type result for functions of bounded pp-variation in the mean and gives some properties for functions of bounded pp-variation by using the Nemytskii operator
