Expressivity Within Second-Order Transitive-Closure Logic
Second-order transitive-closure logic, SO(TC), is an expressive declarative language that captures the complexity class PSPACE. Already its monadic fragment, MSO(TC), allows the expression of various NP-hard and even PSPACE-hard problems in a natural and elegant manner. As SO(TC) offers an attractive framework for expressing properties in terms of declaratively specified computations, it is interesting to understand the expressivity of different features of the language. This paper focuses on the fragment MSO(TC), as well on the purely existential fragment SO(2TC)(exists); in 2TC, the TC operator binds only tuples of relation variables. We establish that, with respect to expressive power, SO(2TC)(exists) collapses to existential first-order logic. In addition we study the relationship of MSO(TC) to an extension of MSO(TC) with counting features (CMSO(TC)) as well as to order-invariant MSO. We show that the expressive powers of CMSO(TC) and MSO(TC) coincide. Moreover we establish that, over unary vocabularies, MSO(TC) strictly subsumes order-invariant MSO
Reducing hardware hit by queries in web search engines
In this paper, we introduce a new collection selection strategy to be operated in search engines with document partitioned indexes. Our method involves the selection of those document partitions that are most likely to deliver the best results to the formulated queries, reducing the number of queries that are submitted to each partition. This method employs learning algorithms that are capable of ranking the partitions, maximizing the probability of recovering documents with high gain. The method operates by building vector representations of each partition on the term space that is spanned by the queries. The proposed method is able to generalize to new queries and elaborate document lists with high precision for queries not considered during the training phase. To update the representations of each partition, our method employs incremental learning strategies. Beginning with an inversion test of the partition lists, we identify queries that contribute with new information and add them to the training phase. The experimental results show that our collection selection method favorably compares with state-of-the-art methods. In addition our method achieves a suitable performance with low parameter sensitivity making it applicable to search engines with hundreds of partitions.Fil: Mendoza, Marcelo. Personnalisation et leadership Le cas du Mouvement Cinq Étoiles
The article draws a characterisation of the late comer among the Italian populist parties, the Five Star’ Movement, led by the ancient comedian Beppe Grillo. Starting with a definition of what he means by “political personalisation”, the Author first describe this party as a political organisation in which the leader masters all the key areas – notably, communication, rules setting, and resolution of internal conflicts. Then, he argue that the Five Star Movement is a “personalist party”, in which Beppe Grillo embodies a powerful but non-charismatic leader. In the closing section, the Author tries to shed light above the probable evolutions of the party, particularly dealing with its institutionalisation process
Descriptive complexity of deterministic polylogarithmic time and space
We propose logical characterizations of problems solvable in deterministic polylogarithmic time (PolylogTime) and polylogarithmic space (PolylogSpace). We introduce a novel two sorted logic that separates the elements of the input domain from the bit positions needed to address these elements. We prove that the inflationary and partial fixed point variants of this logic capture PolylogTime and PolylogSpace, respectively. In the course of proving that our logic indeed captures PolylogTime on finite ordered structures, we introduce a variant of random-access Turing machines that can access the relations and functions of a structure directly. We investigate whether an explicit predicate for the ordering of the domain is needed in our PolylogTime logic. Finally, we present the open problem of finding an exact characterization of order-invariant queries in PolylogTime. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. Un capitolo della fortuna delle "Decades" di Biondo Flavio: da Pio II a Giovanni Albino
L’articolo concentra l’attenzione sul contenuto del ms. München, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Clm 11 324, descritto dal catalogo come «Albini Lucani excerpta ex Blondi decadibus». Ma il codice non contiene gli excerpta delle Historiae ab inclinatione Romano rum imperii di Biondo Flavio, bensí una sintesi della Abbreviatio supra Decades Blondi di papa Pio II. L’autore Giovanni Albino Lucano, storiografo e curatore della biblioteca dei re aragonesi di Napoli, nella dedica al re Alfonso II non fa alcuna menzione del testo di Pio II da lui usato. L’epitome offre una curiosa attestazione indiretta della fortuna di Biondo Flavio, il quale intrattenne diverse relazioni con la corte napoletana di Alfonso il Magnanimo.This article focuses on the contents of MS Munich Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Clm 11324, described in the catalogue as «Albini Lucani excerpta ex Blondi decadibus». But the MS does not contain the excerpts of the ‘Historiae ab inclinatione Romanorum imperii’ of Biondo Flavio, but a summary of the ‘Abbreviatio supra Decades Blondi’ by Pope Pius II. The author, Giovanni Albino Lucano, historian and librarian for the Aragonese kings of Naples, makes no mention in his preface of the work by Pius II which he had used. The epitome is a curious indirect proof of the influence of Biondo Flavio, who had various contacts with the Neapolitan court of Alfonso il Magnanimo

Advances and Challenges for Model and Data Engineering
Following the stimulating discussions in the workshops held during the 9th International Conference on Model and Data Engineering (MEDI 2019), we proposed to edit a special issue compiling the fruitful research resulting from those discussions. This special issue on current research in model and data engineering of the Journal of Universal Computer Science is the outcome of that proposal. As such, it contains thoroughly revised and significantly extended versions of key papers discussed at MEDI 2019 workshops.The main objective of MEDI is to provide a forum for the dissemination of research accomplishments and to promote the interaction and collaboration between the models and data research communities. MEDI provides an international platform for the pre- sentation of research on models and data theory, development of advanced technologies related to models and data and their advanced applications. This international scientific event, initiated by researchers from Euro-Mediterranean countries in 2011, aims also at promoting the creation of north-south scientific networks, projects and faculty/student exchanges.The following seven accepted papers nicely reflect the wide range of topics covered by MEDI conferences.In their paper “Enhancing GDPR Compliance Through Data Sensitivity and Data Hiding Tools”, Xabier Larrucea, Micha Moffie and Dan Mor consider the problem of fulfilling the rules set by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the EU within the framework of the reference architectural model industry 4.0 for the healthcare sector. This is challenging due to the highly sensitive data managed by this sector and the need to share this data between different national healthcare providers within the EU. The authors propose and implement a series of valuable tools to enhance security and privacy in this context as well as compliance with the GDPR. They also illustrate through a case study the use of the proposed tools for sharing health records and their integration within the reference framework.In their paper “BSO-MV: An Optimized Multiview Clustering Approach for Items Recommendation in Social Networks”, Lamia Berkani, Lylia Betit and Louiza Belarif present a new approach to improve accuracy and coverage of clustering based recommendations systems for social networks. The approach is based on improving the results of multiview clustering by combining it with a bees swarm optimization algorithm. Through extensive experimentation with two real-world datasets, they are able to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach to significantly improve accuracy, outperforming others clustering-based approaches.In their paper “A Formal Model for Configurable Business Process with Optimal Cloud Resource Allocation”, Abderrahim Ait Wakrime, Souha Boubaker, Slim Kallel, Emna Guermazi and Walid Gaaloul propose a formal approach to analyse and verify con- figurable business process models as well as to optimize the cost of their implementation in the Cloud. The mechanism consists on transforming the problem into an equivalent Boolean satisfiability problem (SAT) which is then feed to a solver. This transformation is done by means of translation rules from configurable business processes to SAT. This model formalizes the different configurable process behaviors including control-flow and cloud resource allocations, enabling the derivation of correct configuration variants. Weighted partial SAT formulae are integrated in the model in order to optimize the global cloud resource allocation cost.In their paper “Towards a Semantic Graph-based Recommender System: A Case Study of Cultural Heritage”, Sara Qassimi and El Hassan Abdelwahed present a semantic graph-based recommender system of cultural heritage places. Their approach consists on first constructing an emergent description that semantically augments the information about the places of interest and then model through graphs the semantic relationships between similar cultural heritage places and their associated tags. Note that the unsuper- vised nature of folksonomy’s tags semantically weakens the description of resources, which in turn hinders their indexing and decreases the quality of their classification and clustering. The semantic augmentation produced by the proposed method in the case study of cultural heritage places in Marrakesh city shows to be an effective tool to fight information overload and to produce better recommendations in this context. As such, the paper presents a valuable contribution that can be used to improve the quality of recommender systems in general.In their paper “Assembling the Web of Things and Microservices for the Management of Cyber-Physical Systems”, Manel Mena, Javier Criado, Luis Iribarne and Antonio Corral face the challenge of facilitating communication between the diverse devices and protocols used by Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and the Internet of Things (IoT). They propose an approach based on the concept of digital dice (an abstraction of various objects). The digital dice builds on the web of things standard. It is based on microservices and capable of handling the interaction and virtualization of IoT devices. This work introduces a technique to build, transform and compose digital dices from descriptions of “things”. A full transformation flow is presented and a case study is used to illustrate its implementation. The proposal is shown to be effective and flexible, improving the state of the art.In their paper “Model-Driven Engineering for End-Users in the Loop in Smart Ambient Systems”, Sylvie Trouilhet, Jean-Paul Arcangeli, Jean-Michel Bruel and Maroun Koussaifi present a Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) approach to involve the user in the process of constructing at run time component based applications, adapted to a situation and user needs, in the context of ambient systems. The proposed solution relies on several domain-specific languages and a transformation process, based on established MDE tools (Gemoc Studio, Eclipse Modeling Framework, EcoreTools, Sirius and Acceleo). In this context, the authors describe an innovative way of reinforcing the place of the user in the engineering loop. The authors propose an editor that allows the end user to be aware of the emerging applications resulting of this process, to understand their function and use, and to modify them if desired. From these actions, feedback data are extracted to improve the process.In their paper “An Approach for Testing False Data Injection Attack on Data Depen- dent Industrial Devices”, Mathieu Briland and Fabrice Bouquet present a domain specific language (DSL) for generating test data for IoT devices/environments. The DSL is proposed for testing and simulating false data injection attacks (FDIA). First, the paper outlines a generic approach for FDIA and presents a list of possible sensor types and a categorization schema for data obtained from sensors. Then, the application of the DSL is illustrated using two examples; a simple one altering the data obtained from a temperature sensor and a more complex one concurrently altering the data obtained from three particle sensors. The authors show that their approach works well in the case study of the Flowbird parking meter system and discuss how it can be adapted to different application domains.We are grateful to all authors of journal articles in this issue, who contributed to a fine collection of research in model and data engineering. Dopo la trincea: Gramsci, “L’Ordine Nuovo” e la rivoluzione italiana
Through the articles written by Antonio Gramsci during the first year and a half of release of “L’Ordine Nuovo”, you can see the development lines of what the author has established during the World War I on the historical and political analysis of Italian and European society. These ideas deal directly with Factory Council’s doctrine: Gramsci, inspired by the voluntary initia-tives in Turin factories, builds, since the summer of 1919, a revolutionary theory gathered on the role of working-class institutions. The extensive task of the Factory, in a devastated post-war industrial society, forces the political thinker to reshape the traditional functions of the two representative proletarian institutions: Labor Union and Political Party. Only rethinking about how they work, it’s possible to lead to success the revolutionary movement of the most aware Italian workers: from Turin industries can arise the future construction of Italian Soviet repub-lic that, after the victory of the Revolution in all countries, will be melted in international communist society. This theory stands in a particular position between socialist thinkers of that period, not only towards Reformists or Unitarians Maximalists, but also towards elements of the Communist faction that breaks up with the PSI during national congress of Livorno (Janu-ary 1921) to create a new revolutionary Party
