Coprinopsis strossmayeri agg. infrequent but easy to identify
A number of fungal species appear to be absent from the checklists of several countries since they are characterized by infrequency in their fructification. Different explanations have been given for this behaviour and among these the most plausible is linked to weather variations that induce the spores to germinate or mycelium to produce fruitbodies only in certain years. This hypothesis has already been illustrated for some species such as Capnobotrys dingleyae
S. Hughes, Entoloma caeruleum (P.D. Orton) Noordel., E. plebeioides (Schulzer) Noordel. Ileodictyon gracile Berk., Terfezia olbiensis Tul. & C. Tul. and Buchwaldoboletus lignicola (Kallenb.) Pilát. Although the role of fungi in ecosystems is well recognized, there have been comparatively few discussions on their function in urban systems. A high number of tropical and subtropical trees are cultivated along the streets and in the public and private gardens of Italian towns
and a number of fungi are reported from their trunks and stumps. This is exactly the case with Coprinopsis strossmayeri (Schulzer) Redhead, Vilgalys & Moncalvo: infrequent but easy to identify, which was observed, in autumn 2019, for the first time in Sicily
Photoluminescence of Homoleptic Lanthanide Complexes With Tris(benzotriazol-1-yl)borate
Bright photoluminescent neutral complexes having general formula [Ln(tbtz)3] (Ln = Eu, Tb; tbtz = tris(benzotriazol-1-yl)borate) were obtained by reacting K[tbtz] with EuCl3 and TbCl3. The emissions in the visible range, related to the f-f transitions of the trivalent lanthanide ions, are observable upon excitation with wavelengths shorter than 350 nm. The most intense emission bands correspond to the 5D0 → 7F4 transition at 699 nm for the europium complex and to the 5D4 → 7F5 transition at 542 nm for the terbium derivative. The luminescence is in all the cases mostly associated with the antenna-effect from the coordinated tbtz ligands. The synthetic approach was successfully extended to the preparation of the analogous yttrium and gadolinium derivatives. Tricapped trigonal prismatic geometry was attributed to the complexes on the basis of luminescence data and DFT calculations. Highly photoluminescent plastic materials were obtained by embedding small amounts of [Eu(tbtz)3] or [Tb(tbtz)3] in poly(methyl methacrylate)
The Epithelial Barrier Hypothesis in Food Allergies: The State of the Art
Recently, the “epithelial barrier hypothesis” has been proposed as a key factor in the development of allergic diseases, such as food allergies. Harmful environmental factors can damage epithelial barriers, with detrimental effects on the host immune response and on the local microbial equilibrium, resulting in chronic mucosal inflammation that perpetuates the dysfunction of the epithelial barrier. The increased epithelial permeability allows allergens to access the submucosae, leading to an imbalance between type 1 T-helper (Th1) and type 2 T-helper (Th2) inflammation, with a predominant Th2 response that is the key factor in food allergy development. In this article on the state of the art, we review scientific evidence on the “epithelial barrier hypothesis”, with a focus on food allergies. We describe how loss of integrity of the skin and intestinal epithelial barrier and modifications in gut microbiota composition can contribute to local inflammatory changes and immunological unbalance that can lead to the development of food allergies
Is Battarrea phalloides really an endangered species?
Battarrea phalloides (Basidiomycota), a fungus included in many Red Lists worldwide, requires verification of its real conservation status. One of the main problems in the assessment of fungal species is that the categorization of some fungi does not properly reflect the current risk of extinction. For example, the IUCN risk category of B. phalloides is oscillating in England and unclear in Hungary. In this contribution, an additional and unpublished element of evaluation is provided. In Italy, the presence of B. phalloides in the soils that are sold in hypermarkets and nurseries determines its inclusion among the common fungi contaminating the substrates. The authors conclude that B. phalloides is therefore more common than records suggest and discuss its ranking under the IUCN criteria
Dual emission from Mn(II) complexes with carbazolyl-substituted phosphoramides
The carbazolyl-substituted phosphoramide N,N,N’,N’-tetramethyl-P-carbazol-9-ylphosphonic diamide (L) was successfully coordinated to MnX2 halides (X = Cl, Br, I), obtaining tetrahedral complexes having general formula [MnX2L2]. The structures were ascertained by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The three complexes show appreciable luminescence in the visible range upon excitation with UV radiation, attributed to the Mn(II) 4T1(4G)→6A1(6S) transition superimposed to the emission from coordinated ligands. The different contributions are particular evident for the chloro-complex and the relative intensity depends upon the excitation wavelength. The correlation between the two emitting levels is highlighted by the luminescence decay curves of the three compounds
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Typification of the name Eryngium siculum (Apiaceae)
As part of an ongoing study on the names of vascular plants described from Sicily, a nomenclature study of the name Eryngium siculum Lojacono-Pojero (Apiaceae Lindl.), which appears to be yet untypified, is here presented
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
