Modification of biopolymers from renewable resources for their compatibilization towards downstream products such as lubricants, fuels and bitumen
In this thesis, the experimental results obtained during the PhD focused on lignin, starch and natural rubber role in green chemistry applications have been discussed. After the first introductory part consisting in the literature review regarding their structural characterization and chemical transformations, experimental results have been presented. Lignin has been efficiently modified through an esterification procedure using fatty acids whose industrial scale-up is easily achievable and resulted both compatible and thermally stable over long periods of time inside bitumen suitable for road paving applications. In the second part a synthetic modification of lignin and starch with maleic anhydride to obtain monomers for DLP 3D-printing applications was described. Their efficiency inside photo-printable resins has been furthermore demonstrated experimentally. In the final part, a preliminary procedure for industrial rubber devulcanization under mild conditions has been reported
Exotic populations in globular clusters: Blue stragglers as tracers of the internal dynamical evolution of stellar systems
In this paper I present an overview of the main observational properties of a special class of exotic objects (the so-called Blue Straggler Stars, BSSs) in Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs). The BSS specific frequency and their radial distribution are discussed in the framework of using this stellar population as probe of GC internal dynamics. In particular, the shape of the BSS radial distribution has been found to be a powerful tracer of the dynamical evolution of stellar systems, thus allowing the definition of an empirical "clock"able to measure the dynamical age of stellar aggregates from pure observational properties
Nonequilibrium relaxation of a trapped particle in a near-critical Gaussian field
We study the nonequilibrium relaxational dynamics of a probe particle
linearly coupled to a thermally fluctuating scalar field and subject to
a harmonic potential, which provides a cartoon for an optically trapped
colloid immersed in a fluid close to its bulk critical point. The
average position of the particle initially displaced from the position
of mechanical equilibrium is shown to feature long-time algebraic tails
as the critical point of the field is approached, the universal
exponents of which are determined in arbitrary spatial dimensions. As
expected, this behavior cannot be captured by adiabatic approaches which
assumes fast field relaxation. The predictions of the analytic,
perturbative approach are qualitatively confirmed by numerical
simulations
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
The Small Blue Straggler Star Population in the Dense Galactic Globular Cluster NGC 6752
We used high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope (HST)-WFPC2 and wide-field ground-based observations to construct a catalog of blue straggler stars (BSSs) that spans the entire radial extent of the globular cluster NGC 6752. The BSS sample is the most extensive ever obtained for this cluster. Although NGC 6752 is a high-density cluster with a large binary population, we found that its BSS content is surprisingly low: the specific number of BSSs is among the lowest ever measured in a cluster. The BSS distribution is highly peaked in the cluster center, shows a rapid decrease at intermediate radii, and rises again at larger distances. This distribution closely resembles those observed in M3 and 47 Tuc by Ferraro and coworkers. To date, BSS surveys covering the central regions with HST and the outer regions with wide-field CCD ground-based observations have been performed for only these three clusters. Despite the different dynamical properties, a bimodal radial distribution has been found in each. A detailed comparison of observed BSS luminosity and temperature distributions with theoretical models reveals a population of luminous, hot BSSs that is not easily interpreted
