Characterization of a novel Holospora-like symbiont from Frontonia (Ciliophora, Oligohymenophorea)
The existence of symbiotic relationships between prokaryotes
and ciliate protozoa is known from over a century. Most studies
concerned obligatory mutualistic symbiosis, whereas there is little
knowledge about facultative non-mutualistic symbiotic relationships,
mainly because these associations can be spatially and temporally
variable in natural populations and are especially difficult
to maintain in lab conditions. Nevertheless, they seem to be more
widespread among ciliates than so far supposed. A research
project was recently started in order to get data about such kind
of association in ciliate populations living in a coastal brackish
environment. During this study, we observed some individuals
from a population of Frontonia sp. (Oligohymenophorea, Peniculia)
showing roundish macronuclei instead of ellipsoidal ones.
Observation at DIC microscope revealed the presence of some
relatively large spindle-shaped objects in all macronuclei. According
to the general shape and morphological features, the identification
of these objects as Holospora infectious forms was
hypothesized. The genus Holospora (Alphaproteobacteria, Rickettsiales)
comprises bacterial endosymbionts, which are resident
in the nuclear apparatus of ciliates belonging to the genus Paramecium
(Oligohymenophorea, Peniculia). Their life cycle presents
two different forms: a large infectious form and a smaller
reproductive form. Experiments of in situ hybridization using a
genus-specific probe confirmed the identification of the observed
endonuclear objects as Holospora infectious forms; it made also
possible to observe even the smaller reproductive forms in macronuclei
that were not clearly visible at DIC observation. To further
characterize this symbiont, bacterial DNA was extracted from a
population of infected Frontonia sp. cells. The 16S rRNA gene
sequence was obtained by touchdown PCR reaction with a-proteobacteria-
specific primers and direct sequencing of reaction
product. The new sequence shows a similarity value of about
95% with that of H. obtusa. Indeed, analysis of phylogenetic relationships
revealed that the two sequences are firmly associated.
Molecular data obtained up to now suggest the belonging of this
organism to a novel species of Holospora
Contribuciones de la Corona de Filipo al desarrollo del epigrama escóptico: Antífilo y el problema de la ‘edad media’ en la historia del epigrama
The epigrams collected in Philip’s Garland are often regarded as mere rhetorical exercises lacking originality. However, many of their themes and features reappear in the imperial skoptic epigrams of the second century A.D. This connection has been overlooked due to the arrangement of the Palatine Anthology, since many epigrams gathered by Philip that could be interpreted as skoptic are located in Book 9, under the category of epideictic epigrams. This paper aims to demonstrate that numerous characteristics of Lucillius's epigrams can be identified in Antiphilus, an author included in Philip's Garland, but who has received little scholarly attention.

The Argead Kings of Macedonia in the 'Chronicle' of John of Nikiu
The research was supported by the Russian Science Foundation, project nº 22-18-00493, carried out on the basis of the St. Petersburg State UniversityThis essay deals with a description of the reigns of the Macedonian kings of the Argead dynasty (Philip II, Alexander the Great and Philip III Arrhidaeus) in the Chronicle of John of Nikiu (late 7th century AD). The author argues that in contrast to John of Nikiu's information about Philip II and Philip III Arrhidaeus, the account of Alexander found in his Chronicle is far from being merely a truncated version of the corresponding story given by John Malalas (6th century AD), but has a certain self-sufficiency. Therefore, in the opinion of the author, it can be well assumed that the image of Alexander presented by John of Nikiu holds a special, albeit quite modest, place among the portraits of the great conqueror we find in the Byzantine world's literature.
Effects of Listening While Reading (LWR) on Swahili Reading Fluency and Comprehension
A number of studies have examined the contribution of technology in teaching such languages as English, French, and Spanish, among many others. Contrarily, most LCTL’s, have received very little attention. This study investigates if listening while reading (LWR) may expedite Swahili reading fluency and comprehension. The study employed the iBook Author tool to create weekly mediated and interactive reading texts, with comprehension exercises, which were eventually used to collect descriptive and qualitative data from four Elementary Swahili students. Participants participated in a seven week reading program, which provided them with some kind of directed self-learning, and met with the instructor for at least 30 minutes every week for observation and more reading activities. The teacher recorded their reading scores, and a number of themes on how LWR influenced reading fluency and comprehension are discussed here. It shows that participants have a positive attitude towards LWR and they suggest it for all the reading classes
Philippe II et les dieux
Macedonian kings kept close bonds with the divine sphere. They considered themselves as Heraklids (and, in consequence, they traced back their lineage to Zeus himself) and the kingship kept noteworthy religious functions. Philip II made wide use of this religious side and it became a key element of his public image and propaganda, both inside and outside the kingdom of Macedonia. It was especially important the relation Philip established with Panhellenic shrines, like Delphi and Olympia, in close connection with his aspiration for hegemony all over Greece. Philip also regarded his coinage as useful political tools and the religious motives engraved are very telling about the king's claims and objectives. PERBANDINGAN EFEKTIVITAS RIVAROXABAN DAN WARFARIN DALAM MENGATASI KEJADIAN EMBOLI PADA PASIEN DENGAN ATRIAL FIBRILASI
Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common types of cardiac arrhythmias caused by abnormal electrical activity in the heart's atria. A study conducted in Indonesia on the urban population in Jakarta obtained an AF incidence rate of 0.2% with a male to female ratio of 3:2. Oral anticoagulant therapy is the standard therapy for AF to prevent stroke and systemic embolism. The most widely used oral anticoagulants are Vitamin K Antagonist (VKA) such as Warfarin and Direct Oral Anticoagulants such as Rivaroxaban. This literature author conducted to compare the effectiveness. Warfarin and Rivaroxaban in dealing with embolic events in AF patients to find out which type of anticoagulant should be used. The literature sources used were Pubmed, Google Scholar, Medline, Ebsco, Hindawi, Science Direct and Cochrane. Anticoagulants have been used to prevent embolic disease in AF patients and the drug classes used are DOAC and VKA. Based on a literature search it was found that Rivaroxaban can reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism as well as major bleeding events compared to Warfarin. Rivaroxaban has been shown to have superior effectiveness compared to warfarin and can be used as an alternative drug in treating embolic events in AF patients.

Steampunk: The Inner Workings
Steampunk, as a literary genre and cultural phenomena, is a relatively recent innovation that is increasingly receiving critical attention. From the proto-steampunk of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, through the novels of its acknowledged founding fathers K.W. Jeter, Tim Powers and James Blaylock, to contemporary works by China Miéville, Cherie Priest and Paul Di Filipo, steampunk has been plagued by the lack of a unifying definition. Every author, academic and critic has their own definition of it, which may share similarities with others, but none of them can agree on the core ingredients of the genre.
Related to the important task of defining steampunk is the need to answer the question: 'Is steampunk a literary genre?' In many respects, steampunk has moved beyond the literary world. Fashion, art and sub-cultures have all embraced steampunk as a style, an aesthetic, a way of life and even a philosophy. This could be the reason for the inability to find a single unifying definition of steampunk.
This thesis will argue that, rather than a genre, steampunk is best understood as an aesthetic which can be applied, like any aesthetic, to any literary genre to produce a work that is steampunk-inflected, such as science fiction steampunk, alternate history steampunk, steampunk fantasy, historical steampunk, steampunk romance or gothic steampunk. After evaluating both scholarly and popular definitions of steampunk I will explore four key aspects of the steampunk aesthetic: the neo-Victorian tropes which dominate steampunk texts; the relationship between magic and science in the steampunk universe; the places and people who inhabit steampunk worlds; and the revolutionary message of most steampunk creations. Throughout my discussion will focus primarily on a range of texts acknowledged as steampunk: Michael Moorcock’s The Warlord of the Air (1971), K. W. Jeter’s Infernal Devices (1987), Tim Powers’ The Anubis Gates (1983), William Gibson and Bruce Sterling’s The Difference Engine (1991), Paul Di Filippo’s The Steampunk Trilogy (1995), Neal Stephenson’s The Diamond Age (1995), Gail Carriger’s ‘Parasol Protectorate’ series (2009 – current), Mark Hodder’s ‘Burton and Swinburne’ series (2010 – current), Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura by Troika Games and Runic Games’ Torchlight (2009) and Torchlight 2 (2011)
