The Attic and The Wheelchair V.C. Andrews\u27s Accident and The Dollanganger Series

    No full text
Author V.C. Andrews became known in 1979 with her first novel Flowers in the Attic and continued the series with Petals on the Wind, If There be Thorns, and Seeds of Yesterday. Problematic themes such as sudden accidents, romantic rape, incest, and mother daughter rivalry emerge continuously in each novel. In her interview with Douglas E. Winter, Andrews explains that since her debilitating fall down the stairs at the age of fifteen she lived with and depended on her mother. Unable to fulfill the goals of her childhood, Andrews read fairy tales, and romance novels and wrote her fantasies in the Dollanganger Series. The troublesome characteristics of sudden death, taboo sex, and gender roles reveal a stunted emotional development in the author. This thesis examines the possibility that the series\u27s disturbing, repeated themes are inspired by Andrews\u27s debilitating fall down the stairs when she was fifteen

Bifurcations in the wake of a thick circular disk

Using DNS, we investigate the dynamics in the wake of a circular disk of aspect ratio χ = d/w = 3(where d is the diameter and w the thickness) embedded in a uniform flow of magnitude U0 perpendicular to its symmetry axis. As the Reynolds number Re = U0d/ν is increased, the flow is shown to experience an original series of bifurcations leading to chaos. The range Re ∈ [150, 218] is analysed in detail. In this range, five different non-axisymmetric regimes are successively encountered, including states similar to those previously identified in the flow past a sphere or an infinitely thin disk, as well as a new regime characterised by the presence of two distinct frequencies. A theoretical model based on the theory of mode interaction with symmetries, previously introduced to explain the bifurcations in the flow past a sphere or an infinitely thin disk (Fabre et al. in Phys Fluids 20:051702, 2008), is shown to explain correctly all these results. Higher values of the Reynolds number, up to 270, are also considered. Results indicate that the flow encounters at least four additional bifurcations before reaching a chaotic state

1.8. Genlisea uncinata P.Taylor & Fromm, Bradea 3(41): 365 (1983). [Figs. 2 and 6H]. Terrestrial or helophyte. Scape, bracts, bracteoles, pedicels and sepals densely covered with eglandular and longstalked glandular trichomes. Thick and succulent scape. Strongly circinate pedicels in fruits. Purple corolla, yellow and gibbous palate, glandular lips, trilobed lower lip, glandular and uncinate spur, longer than the lower lip and parallel to the pedicel. Bivalvate capsule, covered with glandular trichomes. Selected material:— Abaíra, Catolés, Serra dos Cristais, 20 May 1999, fl. and fr., V.C. Souza 22881 (ESA); Mucugê, Serra do Sincorá, 19 March 1988, fl. and fr., R.M. Harley 20980 (CEPEC holotype, K, NY, P, R, U isotypes); Piatã, trilha para o Campo da Mutuca, 16 July 2005, fl. and fr., V.F.O. de Miranda 1284 (JABU). Comments:— Genlisea uncinata can be readily distinguished from the other purple/lilac flowered congeners in Bahia by its thick and succulent scape, strongly circinate pedicels in fruits and uncinate spur, parallel to the pedicel. Before the record of G. lobata reported for the state (Guedes et al. 2018), this species together with G. exhibitionista were considered the northernmost occurrence of any member of G. subgen. Tayloria (Fleischmann 2012). Genlisa uncinata is endemic to the highest summits of the Chapada Diamantina highlands.Published as part of Guedes, Felipe Martins, Miranda, Vitor Fernandes Oliveira & Alves, Marccus, 2022, Diversity and distribution of Lentibulariaceae in Bahia state, Brazil: implications for phytogeography and conservation, pp. 213-255 in Phytotaxa 556 (3) on page 229, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.556.3.1, http://zenodo.org/record/697283

Multi-target neuroprotective effects of herbal medicines for Alzheimer's disease

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, but its treatment options remain few and ineffective. To find new therapeutic strategies, natural products have gained interest due to their neuroprotective potential, being able to target different pathological hallmarks associated with this disorder. Several plant species are traditionally used due to their empirical neuroprotective effects and it is worth to explore their mechanism of action. Aim of the study: This study intended to explore the neuroprotective potential of seven traditional medicinal plants, namely Scutellaria baicalensis, Ginkgo biloba, Hypericum perforatum, Curcuma longa, Lavandula angustifolia, Trigonella foenum-graecum and Rosmarinus officinalis. The safety assessment with reference to pesticides residues was also aimed. Materials and methods: Decoctions prepared from these species were chemically characterized by HPLC-DAD and screened for their ability to scavenge four different free radicals (DPPH•, ABTS•+, O2•‒ and •NO) and to inhibit enzymes related to neurodegeneration (cholinesterases and glycogen synthase kinase-3β). Cell viability through MTT assay was also evaluated in two different brain cell lines, namely non-tumorigenic D3 human brain endothelial cells (hCMEC/D3) and NSC-34 motor neurons. Furthermore, and using GC, 21 pesticides residues were screened. Results: Regarding chemical composition, chromatographic analysis revealed the presence of several flavonoids, phenolic acids, curcuminoids, phenolic diterpenoids, one alkaloid and one naphthodianthrone in the seven decoctions. All extracts were able to scavenge free radicals and were moderate glycogen synthase kinase-3β inhibitors; however, they displayed weak to moderate acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibition. G. biloba and L. angustifolia decoctions were the less cytotoxic to hCMEC/D3 and NSC-34 cell lines. No pesticides residues were detected. Conclusions: The results extend the knowledge on the potential use of plant extracts to combat multifactorial disorders, giving new insights into therapeutic avenues for Alzheimer's disease

    Morphological pilot-experiment Vinje-basin

This paper evaluates the behaviour and the usefulness of a 3D morphological pilot-experiment. It reports the set up and execution of a 3D wave-current physical model in more detail. Furthermore, a selection of the collected data will be compared with computational output from a 3D morphological model. The bathymetries are mainly determined by a new waterline detection method. The application of this model will be evaluated. The morphological pilot-experiment showed that despite the limited equipment it is feasible to carry out such test. However, the calibration of the upstream sand supply requires much attention. Comparing the measurements of the pilot-experiment with the computational results gives a qualitative agreement. Simultaneous observation of the process parameters such as longshore current and concentration shows significantly lower values than the computer predicted values. Analysing the images ofthe video with the new waterline detection technique appears to be working, but is not very accurate because ofthe sensitivity to the spurious reflections. The morphological impact around structures would be more accurately determined with advanced measurement instruments, operated from a moveable carriage. For longer experimental programmes, an efficient sediment supply system and a more sophisticated sandtrapping and pumping system are necessary in order to keep the model running smoothly.Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience
